Book excerpt: The story of a crisis of epic proportion and the lessons of leadership, innovation, motivation, and teamwork that effectively saved lives and the mine. Rise to the Occasion tells the dramatic story of the men and women who safely led Utah’s 107-year-old Bingham Canyon Mine through the largest mining highwall failure in history. The Manefay failure resulted in 144.4 million tons of rock plummeting more than 2,000 feet and traveling 1.5 miles within 90 seconds—without a single death or injury. The story is told through the eyes of an insider, as the author was brought into the mine just six short weeks before the failure and was a key member of the management team. It’s a Story Only He Can Tell. Illustrated with 160 full-color aerial and ground photos, charts, and illustrations, Rise to the Occasion details the unfolding events of the preparation, failure, and recovery efforts in moment-by-moment accounts. The author then leads the reader to valuable lessons that were learned and how to apply these lessons to any organization that faces risks. The reader will learn to manage a crisis or normal operations by: • Understanding, measuring, and acting on the greatest risks facing the organization. • Creating a culture, based on communication, that inspires dedication, trust, and success. • Wearing a “Black Hat” to challenge thinking that can blind an organization. • Setting “impossible” goals that will not only be met but exceeded. • Breaking down silos to improve teamwork and solve problems. • Reducing bureaucracy and empowering people to increase innovation and expedite solutions. • Using independent experts to provide different points of view and audit the processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Railroads and mining in Bingham Canyon have gone hand in hand since the first railroad was constructed in the canyon in late 1873. Bingham Canyon in the early years was a gold and silver mining camp, and the railroads were small operations. Copper mining took hold in the late 1890s, and the mines, mining companies, and railroads that served them expanded rapidly. Bingham Canyon soon became the largest and richest mining district in the western United States and was the source for as much as a third of the copper mined in the nation. A variety of locomotives worked in the canyon, including a small number of Shay locomotives, several large articulated steam locomotives, and the nation's largest roster of electric locomotives. The last Bingham Canyon ore train ran in late 2001. While the railroad tracks have been removed, the mine itself is very much in full production and remains the source for 25 percent of the nation's copper production.

Book excerpt: The value of Utah's non-petroleum mineral production in 1995 is estimated to be $2.5 billion, an increase of more than $300 million from 1994, making 1995 production an all-time high. Contributions from each of the major industry segments are: base metals, $1,198 million (48 percent of total), coal, $540 million (22 percent of total), industrial minerals, $429 million (17 percent of total), and precious metals, $310 million (13 percent of total). The growth in Utah's mineral valuation by industry segment for 1993 - 1995 is shown in figure 1. Prices rose sharply for base metals (copper, molybdenum, and magnesium) in 1995 while coal and precious metals showed slight improvement. Industrial mineral prices increased modestly for some commodities and declined for other commodities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into one of the largest and most lucrative mineral mining companies in the world, Rio Tinto, Extraction Politics reveals how the company constructs a presence in the places it operates and shapes meanings and orientations toward the environment. Taking readers on a “rhetorical pilgrimage” across the American Southwest, Nicholas Paliewicz shows how Rio Tinto creates adaptable corporate identities. From Ronald Reagan’s frontiersman advertisements for the Borax Mine in California to the pioneer Mormon persona at Bingham Canyon Mine in Salt Lake City and the folksy, paternalistic perspective toward the San Carlos Apache at the proposed mine at Oak Flat, Arizona, the company appropriates local history to embed itself as a valued member of the public—without having to settle in those ecological communities and bear the costs of extraction. This does not occur without resistance, however. Paliewicz also shows how activists use these same tactics to expose Rio Tinto as an exploitative, colonialist polluter. In an era of surging demand for dwindling supplies of minerals and metals, this book previews what the future of extractivism may look like. Extraction Politics will appeal to scholars and students of environmental communication and activist politics as well as general readers interested in the climate crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two centuries, industrial societies hungry for copper – essential for light, power, and communication – have demanded ever-increasing quantities of the metal. Born with a Copper Spoon examines how the metal has been produced, distributed, controlled, and sold on a global scale. However, this is not simply a narrative of ever-increasing and deepening global connections. It is also about periods of deglobalization, fragmentation, and attempts to sever connections. Throughout history, copper production has spawned its own practices, technologies, and a constantly changing political economy. Large-scale production has affected ecologies, states, and companies, while creating and even destroying local communities dependent on volatile commodity markets. Former president of Zambia Kenneth Kaunda once remarked that Zambians were “born with a copper spoon in our mouths,” but few societies managed to profit from copper’s abundance. From copper cartels and the futures market to the consequences of resource nationalism, Born with a Copper Spoon delivers a global perspective on one of the world’s most important metals.
