Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1968, Kempe's was regarded as a model of concise, authoritative explanation paired with exquisite illustrations capturing a single-step in the operation with the critical anatomical structures highlighted in color. Long revered by neurosurgeons in practice and in training and used both in and out of the operating room, Kempe's became a classic. The Second Edition signals the rebirth of a classic text, updated and redrawn for the microsurgical era by a stellar group of internationally recognized authorities in neurosurgery. Two volumes continue Kempe's "top-down" approach with Vol. I covering cranial, cerebral, and intracranial vascular disease while Vol. II covers the posterior fossa, lumbar spine, peripheral nerves as well as new chapters on carotid endartectomy and spinal instrumentation. The operations included in the text are those to which all neurosurgeons in training are exposed and those that represent the majority of cases encountered in daily practice. Emphasis is on surgical anatomy and open operative procedures. Each volume contains 278 color illustrations with critical structures and anatomical landmarks highlighted in color for quick recognition. All of the figures have been redrawn to reflect both contemporary instrumentation and approaches as well as the favorite teaching points of the authors. In addition, the two-volume boxed set is comprehensive yet not burdensome, allowing for portability and use both in and out of the operating room. Updated for a new generation, Kempe's second edition maintains many of the features that made it a timeless classic - chapters written in an authoritative voice of a single neurosurgical expert, brevity and conciseness in text paired with instructive, clear line drawings, and a portability that will allow the books to be valuable references in and out of the operating room.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A treatise on operative neurosurgery by an officer of the Regular Army would ordi narily be expected to emphasize management of trauma. But this is far from an ordinary effort and the reader will quickly realize that here we encounter a Handbuch in the classic mold. General neurosurgical procedures are presented with great clarity by an extra ordinary individual. Originally an ornithologist of repute and accomplished student of medieval history, Colonel KEMPE received his residency training in the large and well-balanced neuro surgical program at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Later, he was assigned to that service and has been Chief of Neurosurgery at the Center since 1965. Through the years, he has made it a practice to sketch the steps and surgical anatomy of his operative proce dures for inclusion in the hospital records, and these drawings have been used on rounds with young house officers as one of the many notable features of the Army's neurosurgical residency program. His remarkable talent with the sketchbook coupled with his devotion to detail in patient care and in teaching has culminated in an opus which will be of tremendous value. The book is based upon the rich personal experience of the neurosurgeons at Walter Reed. The illustrations and text bring to the student an understanding of anatomy and the important minute details of surgical approaches which are unexcelled in any other presently-available text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operative Neurosurgery, Volume II, presents the major neurosurgical procedures in volving the posterior fossa, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. As in Volume I, the text describes and the figures illustrate the step-by-step surgical technique. Emphasis is placed on anatomical topographie views of the operative exposure as seen by the surgeon. The contents have been arranged on the basis of anatomicallocation rather than etiology. Although this book is primarily based on the experience of the neurosurgical service at Walter Reed General Hospital, its content reflects only the views of the author and does not proport to reflect any official position of the Department of the Army or the Department of Defense. Volume II is available at this time because of the tireless efforts of my associate, Major GARY D. VANDERARK, Assistant Chief of Neurosurgery Service, Walter Reed General Hospital. His critical review and support in every aspect of this work are grate fully acknowledged. I also wish to thank Mr. HANs BRANDT of Heidelberg, Germany, who again has demonstrated his great talent in medical artistry. His enduring enthusiasm has also shortened the length of time necessary to prepare this volume. Throughout my military surgical career and especially in the preparation of this work, I have received the unceasing support and encouragement of Lt. Gen. LEONARD D. HEAToN; Surgeon Generar" of the V.S. Army. My thanks are extended to this master teacher and surgeon.

Book excerpt: Introducing Comprehensive Neurosurgery with 118 chapters organized into 8 sections in two volumes and each section has been reviewed by eminent neurosurgeons. This book is meant to serve as a comprehensive guide for Neurosurgical trainees, young Neurosurgeons and those in allied disciplines who participate in neurological care. Volume 1 provides an overview of cerebral homeostasis and neurosurgical care, neurodevelopment disorders, neurotraumas, various intracranial infections and the wide spectrum of cerebrovascular problems. This book intends to be a guide to trainees, young neurosurgeons and those in allied disciplines. Wide spectrum of neurosurgical disorders are covered with 118 chapters organized into 8 sections and 2 volumes; each of the eight sections has been critically reviewed by eminent surgeons. Each chapter specifically attempts to draw together all up-to-date relevant information and integrate theory and practice for a comprehensive learning. The concise and practical style is deliberately chosen for easy use. Comprehensive Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders which affect the spine, the brain, and the nervous system within the head and cervical canal. Comprehensive Neurosurgery can be broadly categorized into two categories, namely surgical neurosurgery, concerned with the operative treatment of disease, and non-surgical neurosurgery, concerned with the management and rehabilitation of patients with acquired brain insults. Neurosurgery is a surgical specialty that deals with the human nervous system. It is both an operating room procedure and a diagnostic procedure. The procedure of neurosurgery deals with the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Some of the operations of neurosurgery that you can find in this blog are pituitary tumor surgery, brain tumor surgery and the craniotomy procedure. Besides the surgical operations, Comprehensive Neurosurgery also deals with diagnostic procedures like the myelogram, spinal taps, brain biopsy and the EEG test. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative atlas focuses on peripheral nerves and provides a brand new approach compared to regular anatomy books. Using a modern 3D approach, it offers an alternative to conventional anatomical structures. It reviews all the anatomy and the morphology of these structures from an original point of view. In these three-dimensional diagrams, as well as in the watercolor drawings enhanced with a 3D inlay, each type of nerve is depicted in a minute detail. The atlas simplifies the anatomy and make it easy and understandable by allowing readers to develop a mental “real-time 3D GPS”. The integration of MRI sections related to the drawings and the descriptions of the main nerve injuries provide medical students with a flexible but effective transition to the radiological interpretation and furthers the clinical learning process. After a detailed evaluation of the morphofunctional anatomy of the peripheral nerves, the authors present a collection of relevant data on neuromuscular transmission, both from classical and recent literature, ranging from the central and peripheral nervous system to the effector muscle. This information offers a basis for understanding the physiology, the pathology, and the repair prospects of peripheral nerves from a purely theoretical point of view. The book is divided into three main parts: - Fundamental notions: from immunohistochemistry to limb innervation- The upper limb: the brachial plexus and related peripheral nerves- The lower limb: the lumbosacral plexus and related peripheral nerves This atlas also features 261 outstanding full-colour 2D and 3D illustrations. Each picture has been designed in 2D and 3D with a combination of the original editor’s personal drawings/paintings and 3D-modeling tools. This book is a valuable resource for anyone studying medicine, anaesthesiology, neurosurgery, spine surgery, pain, radiology or rheumatology and is also of high interest to the whole medical community in general.
