Book Synopsis Rhetorics of Resistance by : Bryan Trabold

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of apartheid was a perilous time in South Africa’s history. This book examines the tactics of resistance developed by those working for the Weekly Mail and New Nation, two opposition newspapers published in South Africa in the mid- and late 1980s. The government, in an attempt to crack down on the massive political resistance sweeping the country, had imposed martial law and imposed even greater restrictions on the press. Bryan Trabold examines the writing, legal, and political strategies developed by those working for these newspapers to challenge the censorship restrictions as much as possible—without getting banned. Despite the many steps taken by the government to silence them, including detaining the editor of New Nation for two years and temporarily closing both newspapers, the Weekly Mail and New Nation not only continued to publish but actually increased their circulations and obtained strong domestic and international support. New Nation ceased publication in 1994 after South Africa made the transition to democracy, but the Weekly Mail, now the Mail & Guardian, continues to publish and remains one of South Africa’s most respected newspapers.
Book Synopsis Reconciliation Through Truth by : Kader Asmal

Book excerpt: The new South Africa has established the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as a mechanism to ensure a collective coming to grips with the apartheid system. The South African transition, while widely billed as a miracle, has not yet received the same systematic treatment as political transitions elsewhere. This book, written by active participants in the new democracy and in the anti-apartheid movement that preceded it, presents for the first time the new country's view of its old self. It supplies a valuable road map of the key issues and debates of the transition.

Book Synopsis Thank you, Judge Mostert! by : Carmel Rickard
Download or read book Thank you, Judge Mostert! written by Carmel Rickard and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anton Mostert was one of South Africa's youngest judges when he was appointed to head a commission of inquiry into exchange control regulations in 1978. His inquiry, seemingly innocuous, unearthed what was at that time the greatest political scandal in the country's history - massive corruption in the department of information. In defiance of warnings by Prime Minister PW Botha not to disclose his findings, Mostert released all the evidence that had been led before him, exposing some of the most powerful men in the country and effectively changing history. The title of this book, Thank You, Judge Mostert! is taken from the inscription which appeared overnight on bumper stickers all over South Africa in the weeks following Judge Anton Mostert's revelations of the Information Scandal. This overt, spontaneous outburst of public appreciation and support requires history to be retold - for this is the story of a principled and courageous judge who not only fiercely fought for the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in South Africa, but who also fearlessly confronted the Afrikaner executive at a critical juncture in South Africa's history.

This book was released on 2014-08-16 with total page 799 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We walked on a patch of grass that seemed to have been burnt a few hours earlier, with soot covering our feet. There, in front of us, lay my beloved brother, Adonis, lifeless, his body facing up. There were numerous stab wounds on his body, including his face, and his lumber jacket was half burnt.” Thus begins Kaizer Nyatsumba’s tragic story of his twin brother’s horrible murder. It is also an intriguing look into aspects of South African life hitherto unknown to many. They were twins of a special kind, the closest of friends, and each other’s confidantes. Their mothers were sisters, they were inseparable when they grew up, they were the first graduates in the extended family, and were the ones the family depended on for leadership. When Adonis was brutally murdered in the Pretoria area in June 2009, Kaizer was shattered and his life irrevocably changed. A part of him died with Adonis, and he has yet to come fully to terms with the loss. A very private man, the author bares his soul in this book. “This story by the master craftsman, Kaizer Nyatsumba, is so absorbing that it is impossible to stop reading.” – Michael Mandl’aButi Mathabela

Download or read book The Press and Apartheid written by William A. Hachten and published by Springer. This book was released on 1984-06-18 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A central thesis of this study is that freedom of the press- the right to talk serious politics and to report and criticize government with impunity- now nonexistent for the black majority, has been steadily declining for the white population as well. Some South African journalists believe that the indistinct line between meaningful press freedom and unacceptable government control has already been crossed.
Download or read book A Luta Continua written by Lizette Rabe and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has media freedom entailed over the couple of centuries and successive governments of the geopolitical region that became South Africa since it was colonised by Westerners? And why can media freedom be described as both pillar and cornerstone of a democracy? It’s simple, as in the words of Nelson Mandela, first state president of a democratic South Africa: Press freedom is the “lifeblood of democracy”. This book tells the tale of the various states of press freedom, or unfreedom, from colonial times to today – from a British governor called a dictator and a despot, through apartheid’s “pigmentocracy”, or “sjambokracy”, where the rule of law “has been replaced by the rule of the whip”, up to the dawn of liberation, with media freedom entrenched in Article 16 of South Africa’s Bill of Rights. And why should all of this concern you? Because media freedom is not about the freedom of the media. It is about your freedom. As was formulated by an editor under apartheid: “If we don’t have a public sympathetic to a free press, not only will we not have a free press, we won’t have a democracy either.” Or, in the words of former Sowetan editor and SANEF chair, Mpumelelo Mhkabela: “Media freedom has nothing to do with the media, but with the freedom of citizens.” And that is why you should know that a free media is the only guarantee for your freedom. As we have seen, both under apartheid and also under a democratic dispensation, it is a matter of a luta continua. The struggle continues. But you, the public, are the guardian of those that guard democracy. Help ensure the rights of a free media, and thereby your democratic rights and a democratic South Africa.
Book Synopsis Robert Sobukwe - How can Man Die Better by : Benjamin Pogrund
Download or read book Robert Sobukwe - How can Man Die Better written by Benjamin Pogrund and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am greatly privileged to have known him and to have fallen under his spell. His long imprisonment, restriction and early death were a major tragedy for our land and the world.' - ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU on Sobukwe On 21 March 1960, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe led a mass defiance of South Africa's pass laws. He urged blacks to go to the nearest police station and demand arrest. Police opened fi re on a peaceful crowd in the township of Sharpeville and killed 69 people. This protest changed the course of South Africa's history. Sobukwe, leader of the Pan-Africanist Congress, was jailed for three years for incitement. At the end of his sentence the government rushed the so-called 'Sobukwe Clause' through Parliament, to keep him in prison without a trial. For the next six years Sobukwe was kept in solitary confinement on Robben Island. On his release Sobukwe was banished to the town of Kimberley, with very severe restrictions on his freedom, until his death in February 1978. This book is the story of a South African hero, and of the friendship between him and Benjamin Pogrund, whose joint experiences and debates chart the course of a tyrannous regime and the growth of black resistance. This new edition of How Can Man Die Better contains a number of previously unpublished photographs and an updated Epilogue.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Communication in the Public Sphere by : Ruth Wodak
Download or read book Handbook of Communication in the Public Sphere written by Ruth Wodak and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As you are reading this, you are finding yourself in the ubiquitous public sphere that is the Web. Ubiquitous, and yet not universally accessible. This volume addresses this dilemma of the public sphere, which is by definition open to everyone but in practice often excludes particular groups of people in particular societies at particular points in time. The guiding questions for this collection of articles are therefore: Who has access to the public sphere? How is this access enabled or disabled? Under what conditions is it granted or withheld, and by whom? We regard the public sphere as the nodal point for the discourses of business, politics and media, and this basic assumption is also s reflected in the structure of the volume. Each of these three macro-topics comprises chapters by international scholars from a variety of disciplines and research traditions who each combine up-to-date overviews of the relevant literature with their own cutting-edge research into aspects of different public spheres such as corporate promotional communication, political rhetoric or genre features of electronic mass media. The broad scope of the volume is perhaps best reflected in a comprehensive discussion of communication technologies ranging from conventional spoken and written formats such as company brochures, political speeches and TV shows to emerging ones like customer chat forums, political blogs and text messaging. Due to the books' wide scope, its interdisciplinary approach and its clear structure, we are sure that whether you work in communication and media studies, linguistics, political science, sociology or marketing, you will find this handbook an invaluable guide offering state-of-the -art literature reviews and exciting new research in your field and adjacent areas.
