Book excerpt: In the year 1677, a Confession of Faith was published by the Baptists, in London and vicinity. This Confession of Faith was reprinted in the year 1689, having been approved and recommended by the Ministers and Messengers of above an hundred congregations in England and Wales--signed by Hanserd Knollys, William Kiffin, Benjamin Keach, and others. The present Catechism was prepared by Benjamin Keach, agreeably to this Confession of Faith, with the following Preface:TO THE READER.Having a desire to show our near Agreement with many other Christians, of whom we have great esteem; we some years since put forth a Confession of our Faith, almost in all points the same with that of the Assembly and Savoy, which was subscribed by the Elders and Messengers of many Churches, baptised on profession of their faith: and do now put forth a short account of Christian principles, for the instruction of our families, in most things agreeing with the shorter Catechism of the Assembly. And this we were the rather induced to, because we have commonly made use of that Catechism in our families, and the difference being not much, it will be more easily committed to memory. As occasional variations have occurred in the numerous editions which have been printed, this edition follows with few exceptions, the one published in London, under the superintendence of Rev. John Rippon, in the year 1794.

This series of questions and answers develops a fundamental understanding of God, sin, salvation, prayer, the Bible, the church and heaven and hell. Each answer in the catechism is supported by Scripture references. The task of teaching doctrine is increasingly challenging in present-day society, but this small catechism is a helpful resource for training children in the fear and the ways of God.

Now, a hidden jewel, Benjamin Beddome's 'A Scriptural Exposition of the Baptist Catechism, ' takes its place alongside the Catechism to give much needed assistance to the same families and classes. Beddome shows how the doctrines contained in the Catechism are founded upon Scripture, and explains them for all to understand. This is indeed a wonderful instrument to make skilled craftsmen from apprentices!" - Dr. James M. Renihan

Book excerpt: This manual includes the London Baptist Confession (1689) and the Baptist Catechism (1751), along with a short essay on the modern-day downgrade and a Bible reading plan. This material has been collected specifically for use among Reformation Montana churches, but it has been made available for all Baptists of life-faith. "Revivalism may be driven by emotion, fanaticism, and every other work of the flesh. But genuine revival and reformation is founded upon and driven by a rediscovery of the great truths of Christianity. Catechisms, such as the one found in these pages, serve to both promote and sustain genuine reformation." Paul Washer Director of HeartCry Missionary Society and 2012 RefMT Conference Speaker "The Bride of Christ needs the book A Baptist Catechism. Jordan has provided a great benefit and asset to the church by compiling valuable resources that will aid and strengthen both the church and her members. The essay, "A Modern Day Downgrade," is revealing and convicting in its content. This is a book that will not disappoint." Ricky Le'Mons Executive Director of Reformation Montana and pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Billings, MT "Western culture today seeks to cut itself free from burdensome things like truth, consistency, and commitment. The Baptist Catechism reminds us that there are truths worth living for, and dying for, that give life transcendent meaning and purpose." Dr. James White, Director of Alpha and Omega Ministries, host of The Dividing Line and 2013 RefMT Conference Speaker.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptism In The New Testament In this thorough and well-documented study of the sacrament of Holy Baptism, G.R. Beasley-Murray presents a critical defense of the doctrine of believers' baptism on the basis of the New Testament evidences. The author--one of the leading New Testament scholars in England--is himself a Baptist; but his discussion transcends denominatioal lines. Beasley-Murray begins by discussing various rites that precede Christian baptism historically, and analyzes the relationship between these earlier rites and baptism. From these antecedents--Old Testament ritual washings, Jewish proselyte baptism, the lustrations practiced at Qumran, and the baptism of John the Baptist--the author proceeds to the foundations of Christian baptism in the career of Jesus, its emergence as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, and its development in the New Testament epistolary literature. In his consideration of the doctrine of Christian baptism as ariculated in the New Testament, Beasley-Murray focuses his attention on the necessity of baptism and its relationship to grace, faith, the Spirit, the church, ethics, and hope. A careful examination of the rise and significance of infant baptism follows, and the study concludes with a selected bibliography and several indices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its third edition and featuring a new foreword by New York Times best-selling author David Platt, pastor Mark Dever’s classic book is not an instruction manual for church growth. Rather, it is a wise pastor’s recommendation for how to assess the health of a church using nine crucial qualities often neglected by many of today’s congregations. Church leaders and church members alike will resonate with the principles outlined here, breathing new life and health into the church at large. In this newly revised edition, fresh arguments have been added (for example on expositional preaching, about the nature of the gospel, on complementarianism), illustrations have been updated, appendices have been changed, and cover has been improved.
