Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American daughter of Egyptian Jewish immigrants journeys in search of belonging from Brazil to New Orleans and beyond—includes recipes and photos! Born to Egyptian Sephardic Jews who fled to the United States after the Arab-Israeli war of 1948, Joyce Zonana spent her childhood in Brooklyn. But her experience of Jewish culture was very different from that of the other children she knew, from the foods they ate to the language they spoke. As she struggled to find a sense of inclusion, never feeling completely American or completely Egyptian, a childhood trip to Brazil became the basis for a lifelong quest to find her place in the world. Meeting members of her extended family who had migrated to Brazil was one step in discovering the kind of life she might have lived in Egypt, and exploring the woman she was becoming. Through travels that ranged from Cairo to Oklahoma and finally New Orleans in the shadow of Katrina, and including an evocative exploration of the way food varies from culture to culture, this is a “frank, spirited memoir of identity from a Brooklyn-raised, Egyptian-born Jewish feminist.” (Kirkus Reviews) “Zonana makes every human encounter lively” —Booklist

Written with warmth, gaiety, elegance and insight, Paris Dreaming is the ultimate chic, personal and charming memoir - not just for women who love Paris, but for anyone in search of that elusive good life. 'A delightful memoir and ode to the City of Light, Paris Dreaming celebrates French joie de vivre and the irresistible beauty of Paris in all its glorious guises. Jane Paech, A Family in Paris 'La vie est faite de petits bonheurs'. I'm just learning what one of Katrina Lawrence's favourite French phrases is and I love it too. Her dream has inspired a whole new reality for this romantic.' Catriona Rowntree 'A beautiful ode to a beautiful city. Book excerpt: Your dreams hold the key to a better, fuller life. There is a reason we dream at night. It's not random nonsense. When we are dreaming, we are thinking on a much deeper, more insightful level than when we're awake. When we're dreaming, we're actually problem solving...it's just in a different language. Our minds are speaking to us in codes: warning, helping, and guiding us through our constantly evolving situations in life. The mind, through dreams, is trying to alert us to problems it wants fixed. The truth is, our best thinking isn't done in the shower, it's done while we dream. In fact, when we say, "Let me sleep on it," what we're really saying is, "Let me dream on it." In this easy-to-use guide, renowned dream analyst Lauri Quinn Loewenberg gives you the tools to interpret the often confounding language of dreams. You will learn how to: * unlock the hidden dream communications your mind wants you to know * understand commonly occurring people, places and animals as extensions of your personality * decipher the real meaning behind nightmares like falling, drowning, and being chased * discover the big messages in seemingly small dream elements as Lauri guides you through dozens of real-life dreams * use your dreams as a tool to solve your everyday problems and effect real change in your life and relationships * reference the most important dream symbols with a comprehensive dream dictionary

Book excerpt: Katrina's Imprint highlights the power of this sentinel American event and its continuing reverberations in contemporary politics, culture, and public policy. Published on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the multidisciplinary volume reflects on how history, location, access to transportation, health care, and social position feed resilience, recovery, and prospects for the future of New Orleans and the Gulf region. Essays examine the intersecting vulnerabilities that gave rise to the disaster, explore the cultural and psychic legacies of the storm, reveal how the process of rebuilding and starting over replicates past vulnerabilities, and analyze Katrina's imprint alongside American's myths of self-sufficiency. A case study of new weaknesses that have emerged in our era, this book offers an argument for why we cannot wait for the next disaster before we apply the lessons that should be learned from Katrina.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson acquired 828,000 square miles of French territory in what became known as the Louisiana Purchase. Although today Louisiana makes up only a small portion of this immense territory, this exceptional state embraces a larger-than-life history and a cultural blend unlike any other in the nation. Louisiana Culture from the Colonial Era to Katrina, a collection of fourteen essays compiled and edited by John Lowe, captures all of the flavor and richness of the state's heritage, illuminating how Louisiana, despite its differences from the rest of the United States, is a microcosm of key national concerns -- including regionalism, race, politics, immigration, global connections, folklore, musical traditions, ethnicity, and hybridity. Divided into five parts, the volume opens with an examination of Louisiana's origins, with pieces on Native Americans, French and German explorers, and slavery. Two very different but complementary essays follow with investigations into the ongoing attempts to define Creoles and creolization. No collection on Louisiana would be complete without attention to its remarkable literary traditions, and several contributors offer tantalizing readings of some of the Pelican State's most distinguished writers -- a dazzling array of artists any state would be proud to claim. The volume also includes pieces on a couple of eccentric mythologies distinct to Louisiana and explorations of Louisiana's unique musical heritage. Throughout, the international slate of contributors explores the idea of place, particularly the concept of Louisiana as the center of the Caribbean wheel, where Cajuns, Creoles, Cubans, Haitians, Jamaicans, and others are part of a New World configuration, connected by their linguistic identity, landscape and climate, religion, and French and Spanish heritage. A poignant conclusion considers the devastating impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and what the storms mean for Louisiana's cultural future. A rich portrait of Louisiana culture, this volume stands as a reminder of why that culture must be preserved.

Book excerpt: “The first thing I need you to know is that becoming a teacher was the most important thing that ever happened to me.” With these words, Kaycee Eckhardt begins a journey both harrowing and hopeful: the story of becoming an effective teacher, and building a new school, in post-Katrina New Orleans. Beginning as a first year teacher, barely out of six weeks of training, the book follows her path from the New Orleans neighborhoods of Holly Grove, Algiers, Treme, and the 9th Ward. She takes us through four different schools, a destroyed bicycle, a half dead pit bull, a burlesque-dancer, spit and a concussion, broken light bulbs, a phonics lesson, and planting the seeds of literacy in the most dire of circumstances. With affection and brutal honesty, she relates the hilarity and tragedy of several children, the belief in all things possible, and finally, the most difficult decision of all. Filled with heartbreaking stories, teacher survival strategies, and an excess of heart, Katrina's Sandcastles is a story of sacrifice and struggle, belief and failure, despair and ultimate redemption in the heart of the Crescent City.

Book excerpt: I sit here at the waterfront looking out into the sky. The moon, blood orange with a bright streak of light hovering over the top rim. The wave's splash loud against the dark rocky shores as the cold breeze creeps up. It brings me so much peace inside, my mind is clear and I have no worries. The wind slapping my face reminds me I am still alive, I am myself but forever changed. What is purpose? Living life trying to be someone you think you are meant to be not knowing if it is what your true purpose is. I stand here looking at myself in the mirror, seeing someone I know but no one the world knows. I am one in a million people who is a habitant of this world trying to find their purpose.

Our trumpeter ran wildly through the main street and all the side streets announcing the news in a rather loud and musical manner. The women ran to their balconies each time they heard his voice, but this time his voice had a stronger tone denoting the urgency of his message. As he was busy running and shouting the news, he wanted to be the first to spread the monumental event. There was no rewardthis is how he wasthis is what he enjoyed doing. Men gathered in small groups in front of the local cafs, while women gathered in less visible areas, but all with one common interest. They wanted to find out why and how this event could have happened. Katrina was only sixteen years old. The villagers were upset. They were angry at her parents for giving their consent for Katrina to marry and move to another continent. After all, she was their only daughter, and it seemed that their deci-sion to send her away held some kind of dark secret. Unaware of how quickly the news had traveled, Katrina was caught by surprise when walking to her grandmothers house, people stopped her to find out what happened. She simply kept walking. In a small Cretan village in the 1950s, Katrina spends much of her time at her grandmothers house. This is where she finds a safe haven, and in the small cha-pel of the property, Katrina reveals her secret to God. The opportunity to marry a young American at the age of sixteen presents itself as the only exit, not realizing the many obstacles awaiting her. Fifty years later, Katrina recounts her life and visits her small town one more time in order to bring a sense of closure to her life. Her parents home is void of life, and she visits their gravesite so that she can finally accept their exit and her emergence into a world really missed and never forgotten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about two devastating events that happened in my life in 2005. The first one was the loss of my youngest son. He left this life in a trucking accident. Most of his twenty-four years, he wanted to be a tractor trailer driver. Driving the big rig was all he wanted to do since he could walk and talk. The second one is about the home we lost two months after the passing of Anthony. Hurricane Katrina came through the Gulf Coast and destroyed our home and everything we owned. We experienced life on the street for the next week. It is an ordeal that I never want to experience again. When I left New Orleans the only thing I had left was my purse and the clothes on my back. We lost everything. I have recovered from most of the material things I lost. I was able to purchase them again. I have accepted the fact that God doesn't make mistakes and he knows what's best, but I have not totally recovered from the loss of my son. There are days that I'm totally fine. Then there are days that I feel the pain of the loss. My good days do outweigh my sad days, so I don't complain. It is God who has blessed me and brought me through and I'm grateful.
