Book excerpt: - First monograph on one of the world's leading feminist photographers, Kat Toronto - Kat Toronto's photographs offer a unique interpretation of female erotic art - Brings together 250 Polaroid images, captured over the past six years Kat Toronto was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and currently resides in London. In 2010, she was diagnosed with a rare form of cervical cancer, which three years later led to a full hysterectomy - a traumatic procedure that alienated the artist from her body. Toronto developed her alter ego, 'Miss Meatface', as a way to process that trauma and to give her an outlet to explore her sexuality beyond what is typically expected of those who have a womb. "I found myself stopping to think about what the heck gender really was", she recalls, "and why society historically placed so much emphasis on sculpting gender stereotypes." In the beginning, she experimented with special effects makeup and took self-portraits with a Polaroid camera. "That's where the Meatface thing came from", she says. Then gradually, as she explored her relationship with the fetish community and reflected on her personal history, 'Miss Meatface' began to evolve: "it's interesting, how with the twists and turns that my life takes, she just kind of goes with it and reveals something new to me every time." Wearing masks and dressing in fetish-wear is a joyous process for Toronto, as it liberates her from the restraints set on her physical body by a society obsessed with defining and policing gender. In her Miss Meatface self-portraiture, Toronto stages fetishized domestic scenes that play with dominance and submission - games of power that mirror heterosexual power hierarchies - while her sexually ambiguous figures subvert conventional standards of beauty, gender, and power. In the world of 'Miss Meatface', she says, the role of homemaker is not the stereotypical ideal of feminine domestic submission, it is one of ultimate control over her domain. This book, Kat Toronto's first large-scale publication, brings together some 250 scenes from 'Miss Meatface's' life over the past six years, drawn from locations in the US and UK, and captured on Polaroid.

Book excerpt: Hardcover, 148 pages 9 × 12 in. 22.86 × 30.48 cm. Pheromone Hotbox, the first monograph from Los Angeles-based photographer Amanda Charchian (born 1988), brings together work shot by the artist between 2012 and 2015. Working around the idea of the "Pheromone Hotbox" that occurs when a woman photographs another woman--a title Charchian lent to a 2014 group exhibition at Stephen Kasher Gallery in New York--Charchian photographs her female artist friends in dramatic locations across the globe, including in Iceland, France, Costa Rica, Morocco, Israel, and Cuba. Simultaneously dreamy and erotically charged, Charchian's photographs capture the intensity and intimacy of the interaction between artist and model. In addition to exhibiting her fine art photography in galleries internationally, Charchian is also well known for her fashion and commercial work, which has appeared in numerous international publications, including Vogue, Huffington Post, i-D, Interview, Garage, and Purple. Book excerpt: "Andy Warhol: Revelation, opening October 20, 2019, will be accompanied by this 96 page full-color exhibition catalogue. This publication includes a forward from Patrick Moore, the director of The Andy Warhol Museum, an essay by José Carlos Diaz, chief curator at The Warhol, titled "Into the Sunset" on the spiritual aspects of Warhol's "Sunset" commission in 1967, and an essay by Miranda Lash, curator of contemporary art at the Speed Art Museum, titled "Kitsch You Can Believe In: Warhol's Incessant Last Supper." The book will also feature descriptions of the thematic exhibition sections, along with high quality image plates of selected works and a comprehensive checklist of all the objects featured in the show. The Revelation catalogue will provide a snapshot of the exhibition, which will be the first of its kind to comprehensively examine the Pop artist's complex Catholic faith in relation to his artistic production. In what follows, you will find a summary of the scope and scale of the exhibition's content: Christian motifs frequently appear in both explicit and metaphorical forms throughout the body of Warhol's oeuvre. While his monumental crosses and depictions of Christ directly reference biblical stories, the exhibition will also explore his coded depictions of spirituality such as an unfinished film reel depicting the setting sun, originally commissioned by the de Menil family and funded by the Roman Catholic Church. Born in Pittsburgh to a devout Byzantine Catholic family, Warhol grew up attending multiple weekly services at his local church with his mother, Julia Warhola. He would stare for hours at the icon paintings of Christ and the saints that hung in the elaborate iconostasis, or icon screen, at the front of the nave. In the Warhola family's Carpatho-Rusyn neighborhood, life revolved around the church community, and the young artist was deeply affected by this environment. Using The Warhol's robust holdings of the artist's early works, the exhibition will trace the influence of his religious roots in Pittsburgh to his Pop career in New York City. Throughout his life as a celebrity artist, Warhol retained some of his Catholic practices when his peers were distancing themselves from their religious backgrounds. Yet, his relationship with Catholicism was far from simple. As a queer man, Warhol may have felt a sense of guilt and fear towards the Catholic Church, which kept him from fully immersing himself in the faith. Nevertheless, he used various media to explore this tension through his art. From iconic portraits of celebrities to appropriated Renaissance masterpieces, Warhol flirted with styles and symbolism from Eastern and Western Catholic art history, carefully reframing them within the context of Pop. Through this process, the artist elevated kitsch and mundane images from mass media, and transformed them into sacred high art. The exhibition will feature over 100 objects from the museum's permanent collection, including archival materials, drawings, paintings, prints and film. Rare source material and newly discovered items will provide an intimate look on Warhol's creative process. Through both obscure works such as the "sunset" film commission from 1967 and late masterpieces like the pink Last Supper (1986), the exhibition will present a fresh perspective on the artist. Andy Warhol: Revelation is curated by José Carlos Diaz, chief curator at The Andy Warhol Museum. After opening at The Warhol, Andy Warhol: Revelation will travel to the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky and be on view from April 3 through August 21, 2020"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Guyette, the "G-string King," referenced in the film of Wonder Woman''s creator, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, and costumer to Bettie Page, was the first person to produce and distribute fetish art in America. In 1935, he was arrested and sent to federal prison. But what should''ve been the end was just the beginning. Although rarely credited by name in his lifetime, he influenced everyone who would follow him, particularly the publishers Robert Harrison, John Willie, Irving Klaw, and Leonard Burtman. The aim of this book was to evoke the spirit of Guyette -- to collect surviving fragments of a decimated catalog largely by referencing vintage fetish publications from the 1930s through the 1980s and reconstruct a lost history. This portfolio of images is followed by biographical information seen nowhere else, and serves as a substantial introduction to the birth of American fetish art and the cultural impact of an unrecognized pioneer. ** 2018 Expanded Second Edition ** contains 25 additional pages, 30+ newly discovered, uniquely beautiful Guyette images. Many not seen in over 70 years. ====> Make this collection yours today! Reviews: "If New York collector, writer and fetish historian Richard Pérez Seves had not decided to assemble what he knew about Charles Guyette (along with a substantial selection of images) into this paperback, this influential forerunner of the genre''s better known exponents would have continued a lot longer as the great unsung hero of American fetish art." -- Tony Mitchell, thefetishistas.com "If you''re at all a fan of fetish art ... then this book will be right up your alley." -- kinkweekly.com "I''ve often cited John Willie''s gals as my biggest fashion inspiration but I''ll have to start tipping my hat to Guyette as well." -- Dita Von Teese ” "Peek Inside" with Dita Von Teese (copy & paste) ” instagram.com/p/BbC7Aw8BjRW ” "Peek Inside" NEW Edition (copy & paste) ” fethistory.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html From the Author: "Fetish art (although the word "fetish" was not used in those days as that term came into fashion in a non-clinical way in the 1970s) was about testing the boundaries of freedom. Some of it had to do with unconventional sexual expression ... but more of it had to do with fashion because of how identity and gender are connected to what we wear. Charles Guyette was a sexual fantasist, who earned his living as a costumer. He sold photos of his "costume studies" on the sly. He produced custom-made high-heel boots and shoes, sold corsets, opera gloves, and other eccentric accessories. He understood the transformative power of clothing, particularly "bizarre" and theatrical fashion. He is also referenced in the new film on Wonder Woman''s creator, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, as the costumer for Wonder Woman''s real life inspiration, Olive Byrne. * * * * About the author: He is also the author of the upcoming hardcover illustrated fetish art history and biography, Eric Stanton & the History of the Bizarre Underground. =============== Available now on Amazon for pre-order =============== Tags: Charles Guyette, the "G-string King," vintage fetish, fetish fashion, Yva Richard, Weimar, John Willie, Irving Klaw, Eric Stanton, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, The Secret History of Wonder Woman, My Beauty Mark, Burlesque and The Art of The Teese, high-heel shoes, boots, corsets, Dita Von Teese, Bettie Page: Queen of Curves, Bettie Page Reveals All, Voluptuous Panic, Vivian Maier, Annie Leibovitz, Jill Lepore, Horizontal Collaboration, Weimar Republic books, The Erotic World of Weimar Berlin, London Life

Book excerpt: * First monograph on Playboy model, turned photographer, Ifa Brand* Ifa Brand's photographs offer a unique interpretation of female erotic art* Brings together 70 Polaroid images, captured over the past four yearsIfa Brand never felt satisfied as a model. The dissatisfaction stemmed from not being able to represent her true identity: 'I fell "between styles": alternative but not alternative enough; fetish but not in a typical sense. I also disliked photographers telling me how I should look, pose, behave; telling me no to red lips, no to precious lingerie and all the things I loved.' In 2017, she decided to go her own way. She saw photography as an opportunity to be her own creative director, to follow her own storylines, and to explore her own vision of sensuality, eroticism and fetish. Hers is a quest for personal empowerment through the art of self-portraiture: 'I find it very important to present a strong, independent woman. There needs to be an element of being untouchable. The message to the viewer is: yes you can look but solely on my terms.'

With more than 400 rare images and interviews with Stanton's family and closest associates, this biography chronicles the infamous circle of patrons, publishers, and cult icons populating his subterranean world, including Irving Klaw, John Willie, Bettie Page, Steve Ditko, and Gene Bilbrew. Book excerpt: "Following the publication of Chromes in 2011 and Los Alamos Revisited in 2012, the reassessment of Eggleston's career continues with the publication of The Democratic Forest, his most ambitious project. This ten-volume set containing more than a thousand photographs is drawn from a body of twelve thousand pictures made by Eggleston in the 1980s. Following an opening volume of work in Louisiana, which serves as a visual preface, the remaining books cover Eggleston's travels from his familiar ground in Memphis and Tennessee to Dallas, Pittsburgh, Miami, Boston, the pastures of Kentucky, and as far as the Berlin Wall. The final volume leads the viewer back to the South of small towns, cotton fields, the Civil War battlefield of Shiloh and the home of Andrew Jackson, the President from Tennessee. The democracy of Eggleston's title refers to his democracy of vision, through which he represents the most mundane subjects with the same complexity and significance as the most elevated. The exhaustive editing process of The Democratic Forest--a rarely shown body of work of which only a fraction has been published to date--has taken over three years, and was guided by the belief that only on this large scale can the magnitude of Eggleston's achievement be represented. With no precedent in American art, Eggleston's photography seen as a whole has all the grandeur of an epic piece of fiction.--Publisher's Web site.

Book excerpt: A fascinating look at how Mapplethorpe and Munch, although separated by many years, shared certain affinities in their lives and artwork This revelatory catalogue delves into the many affinities shared between two widely renowned and discussed artists, Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) and Edvard Munch (1863-1944), whose intensely studied work has, until now, never been considered in relation to one another. Mapplethorpe + Munch brings to light how these two monumental figures curiously relate on an existential level, in how they deal with questions concerning sexuality, and in their way of utilizing self-portraiture as a means to explore issues of personal identity. Featuring essays that examine the thematic impulses behind the accompanying exhibition, this publication establishes a previously unexplored association between two equally contentious art figures, while working to impart alternative perspectives and new insight into their respective outputs. Although distinct in their legacies, Mapplethorpe and Munch remain remarkably intertwined. Distributed for Mercatorfonds Exhibition Schedule: Munch Museum, Oslo (02/06/16-05/29/16)

Book excerpt: Live Art is a contested category, not least because of the historical, disciplinary and institutional ambiguities that the term often tends to conceal. Live Art can be usefully defined as a peculiarly British variation on particular legacies of cultural experimentation – a historically and culturally contingent translation of categories including body art, performance art, time-based art, and endurance art. The recent social and cultural history of the UK has involved specific factors that have crucially influenced the development of Live Art since the late 1970s. These have included issues in national cultural politics relating to sexuality, gender, disability, technology, and cultural policy. In the past decade there has been a proliferation of festivals of Live Art in the UK and growing support for Live Art in major venues. Nevertheless, while specific artists have been afforded critical essays and monographs, there is a relative absence of scholarly work on Live Art as a historically and culturally specific mode of artistic production. Through essays by leading scholars and critical interviews with influential artists in the sector, Critical Live Art addresses the historical and cultural specificity of contemporary experimental performance, and explores the diversity of practices that are carried out, programmed, read or taught as Live Art. This book is based on a special issue of Contemporary Theatre Review.
