Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tarlab sat on the swing swaying back and forth and watched the group of kids play in the dirt. There was so little to do on the playground, if one could really consider it a playground. It consisted of four swings, but only two were completely functional. The other two were cracked and hanging partially off the chains. Only a very light, small child could sit in the broken swings and even then they would be taking a chance of falling. Tarlab had grabbed one of the working swings as soon as school was out, and he still sat there a half hour later to the disappointment of a line of kids waiting for a turn. Normally, he'd let one of the younger kids enjoy the freedom of the movement and flying high while feeling the wind whip across their face. It was as free as one would ever feel in this world. But not today since today was his last day of childhood. His last day to be among the kids sitting on the ground scooping handfuls of dirt and dumping it to the side as they paved make-believe roads. It was his last day to watch a group of kids swinging sticks around as weapons or hitting stones into the field beyond the playground. It was his last time to swing and enjoy his freedom. Tomorrow started his purgatory before adulthood. He knew he should be frightened. He knew making it through purgatory was unlikely, and he should be worried, but rather his heart weighed heavy. So he watched the children with envy...nostalgia for days of freedom gone, never to return. Birthdays should be happy, memorable days, especially one's 18th birthday. But for the citizens governed by the Ruling Assembly, the 18th birthday is a dreadful day, where the only gifts are fear and a looming uncertainty. Taken from their families by the Ta-Ta, the 18 year old betwixts are turned into reality stars of their own hellish show, where death is just as real as life and sacrifice in the name of science is nothing more than an apocryphal promise. And the promise and hope of youth is d

Book excerpt: Four old friends confront their darkest secrets in this fantasy steeped in nostalgia, folklore, religion, and the seductive landscape of Southern Italy—by the Italian Neil Gaiman. “A tale of adventure, mystery, friendship and heart-wrenching beauty that will make you re-examine what is holy, what is true, and what is beyond the realm of possibility.” —BookPage Four old school friends have a pact: to meet up every year in the small town in Puglia they grew up in. Art, the charismatic leader of the group and creator of the pact, insists that the agreement must remain unshakable and enduring. But this year, he never shows up. A visit to his house increases the friends’ worry: Art is farming marijuana. In Southern Italy doing that kind of thing can be very dangerous. They can’t go to the Carabinieri so must make enquiries of their own. This is how they come across the rumors about Art—bizarre and unbelievable rumors that he miraculously cured the local mafia boss’ daughter of terminal leukemia. And among the chaos of his house, they find a document written by Art, “The Book of Hidden Things”, that promises to reveal dark secrets and wonders beyond anything previously known. Set in the beguiling and seductive world of Southern Italy, Francesco Dimitri’s first novel in English is a story friendship, landscape, love, betrayal, and mystery that will entrance fans of Elena Ferrante, Neil Gaiman, and Donna Tartt.

Book excerpt: Ecotoxiclogical risk from multiple stressors covers any situation where org- isms are exposed to a combination of environmental stressors. These include physical and chemical pollutants as well as other stressors such as parasites and environmental impact (e. g. , climate change or habitat loss). The combi- tion of stressors can result in increased risk to organisms (either additive or synergistic effects) or decreased effects (protective or antagonistic effects). The multiple stressor challenge is an international, multi-disciplinary problem requiring an international, multi-disciplinary approach. The c- rent approach to multiple stressors is to examine one stressor at a time and assume additivity. Little work has been done on combinations of stressors such that potential interactions can be determined. The problem is very complex. Multiple stressors pose a whole spectrum of challenges that range from basic science to regulation, policy and gove- ance. The challenges raise fundamental questions about our understanding of the basic biological response to stressors, as well as the implications of those uncertainties in environmental risk assessment and management. In addition to the great breadth, there is also great depth in the research ch- lenges, largely due to the complexity of the issues. From a basic science point of view, many of the mechanisms and processes under investigation are at the cutting edge of science — involving new paradigms such as genomic ins- bility and bystander effects.

Book excerpt: "On January 26, 1996, Dave Schultz, Olympic gold medal winner and wrestling champion, was shot in the back by du Pont heir John E. du Pont at the family's famed Foxcatcher Farm estate in Pennsylvania. Following the murder, du Pont barricaded himself in his home for two days before he was finally captured. How did the so-called best friend of amateur wrestling come to commit such a horrifying, senseless murder? For the first time ever, Dave's brother, Mark--another Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler under du Pont's patronage--tells the full story. Fascinating, powerful, and deeply personal, Foxcatcher is a riveting account as told by the only person close enough to know the mind of the murderer." -- Page [4] cover.

Book excerpt: I never thought I'd be singing happy birthday to myself in a dungeon. And yet when a sinfully sexy demon crashes happy hour, that's exactly what happens. He's known as the Lord of Chaos, and he's mistaken me for my succubus doppelgänger. Happy birthday to me. When he tastes my blood, he finally understands I'm mortal. And I realize we have something in common: we both crave revenge. So we make a deal: I can stay in the forbidden city to hunt for my mom's killer. In return, I'll help him get the vengeance he craves. I just have to pose as a sexy succubus. One problem--he's my number one suspect. And that's increasingly hard to remember as he teaches me my role: seduction. With each heated touch I drift further into peril. And if I fall under his seductive spell, death awaits me. "I flew through this book... Hot demon lord-check. Action-check. Romance-check. And there's spice! If you love my books, you definitely want to read this one." -Laura Thalassa
