Helmholz wählt charakteristische Bereiche, in denen das kirchliche Recht z.B. modernes Grundrechtsdenken geprägt hat: so bei der Freiheit zur Eheschließung, dem Verbot doppelter Strafverfolgung oder beim Anspruch auf juristische Fürsorge bei Bedürftigen. Helmholz führt darüber hinaus die Bedeutung der Sakramente für die kirchliche Rechtsordnung am Beispiel der Taufe vor. Das vielfältige und spannungsreiche Verhältnis der Kirche zur weltlichen Rechtsordnung wird ebenso in zahlreichen Phasen erfasst wie der große Anteil der Kanonistik in der Geschichte des Prozessrechts. Schließlich prüft Helmholz das Papsttum als zentrale Institution am Beispiel der päpstlichen Privilegien, zeigt dabei die Grenzen seiner Macht in der mittelalterlichen Rechtswirklichkeit auf.

Ebenso werden dort die Rechte von Migranten behandelt wie Fragen der Staatsangehörigkeit oder Regeln für den Krieg. Auch wird deutlich, warum Europa den Kriegsgrund des »Heiligen Krieges« im Ergebnis ablehnte. An diesen Themen zeigt sich beispielhaft die allgemeine Entwicklung zu einer spezifisch völkerrechtlichen Literatur. Damit füllt der Band eine große Forschungslücke.
