Im Alltag kann vieles anerkannt werden: Leistungen eines Arbeitnehmers oder einer Hausfrau, die Rechte eines Tieres, die Legitimation des Museumsbesuchers als Student. Ebenso können viele Formen der Missachtung ausgemacht werden: Ein Verkehrszeichen wird missachtet, die Urheberrechte an einer digitalen Datei, die Gleichberechtigungsansprüche einer Frau. Eine soziologische Theorie der Anerkennung und Missachtung muss hier zunächst eine Kategorisierung anbieten – Honneths Theorie tut dies, wie in dern Kapiteln 2.1 für die Anerkennung und 2.2 für die Missachtung ausgeführt werden wird. Erst hierdurch kann verdeutlicht werden, worauf die Theorie abhebt und welche Deutungen sie vorschlägt. So stellt sich manchem Leser bei der Lektüre von Honneths „Kampf um Anerkennung “ die Frage, ob denn alle Formen der Anerkennung gut und nützlich, dem Individuum und der Gesellschaft zuträglich sind, und ob dies im Gegenzug auch für die Missachtung gilt: dass sie nämlich immer moralisch und funktional negativ zu bewerten, dem Einzelnen und der Gemeinschaft abträglich ist.

Aufgabe dieser Arbeit ist es, den in der Anerkennungstheorie Axel Honneths beschriebenen Begriff der sozialen Anerkennung als Grundlage der menschlichen Identitätsbildung darzustellen beziehungsweise die Festigung menschlicher Identität als Produkt interpersonaler Anerkennungsprozesse zu beschreiben. Dazu wird zunächst der Anerkennungsbegriff im Sinne Hegels als Motor einer Bewegung hin zu gesellschaftlicher Sittlichkeit skizziert. Anschließend an die grundlegende Definition des Anerkennungsbegriffes als Grundlage gesellschaftlicher Sittlichkeit und die Untersuchung des Identitätsbegriffes aus verschiedenen theoretischen Perspektiven soll der gesellschaftliche Kampf um Anerkennung im Sinne Honneths als wichtigstes Merkmal der „Grammatik sozialer Konflikte“ dargestellt sowie beschrieben werden, welche Bedeutung der Begriff der Anerkennung in den Sphären der Liebe, des Rechts und der sozialen Wertschätzung einnimmt.
