Book excerpt: The major religious traditions of South Asia are ‘religions of the book’. All accept basic arrays of texts of scriptures, often seen as sacred reservoirs of meaning and power. The West has viewed these texts as ‘bibles’ of their respective traditions, projecting onto them Western values and concerns. This book challenges such misconceptions by revealing the complex character of scripture and its interpretation in South Asian religions. Texts in Context explores the hermeneutical traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Islam, and Sikhism. The question of how we should understand the diversity of text-traditions is approached by asking “How have traditional thinkers — the exegetes within these traditions —understood and utilized scripture?” The answers, though remarkably diverse, do reveal important similarities and take the discussion of scripture in India to a deeper level. This book makes accessible to the non-specialist sensibilities and approaches that have previously received little attention in the West, but have formed the basis for traditional efforts to understand and utilize scripture. It is a collaboration between contemporary thinkers and their traditional counterparts, whose voices emerge as they consider the sacred words of the religious traditions of South Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kalpa Sutra, and Nava Tatva: Two Works Illustrative of the Jain Religion and Philosophy Ceylonese date of the death of Buddha is rc. 543, and the death of the Tirthankara having taken place in 569, we obtain the reasonable period of twenty-six years, for the demise of the preceptor before his pupil. The Kalpa b'utra, according to a date embodied in the work itself, was composed 980 years after the demise of Mahavira, that is to say, a.d. 411. The public reading of the work took place twelve years afterwards, as narrated in the Introduction. The author's name was Bhadra Bahu, and the sovereign who then reigned in Gujarath, was Dhruva Sena. The four commentators who, between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, have commented on the work, are Yasovgaya, whose Sanskrit work, called Sakhabadha, has been used in making the annexed translation, Devichandra, the Gujarathi translator chiefly fol lowed, and J nanavimala, and Szimayasundaia. There is so little of Eastern extravagance exhi bited in the age and date of the death of Mahavira, that one is glad for once to escape exposure to the spirit of scepticism which so generally haunts the European in his antiquarian researches in India. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Western Jain scholarship has focused on those texts and practices favoring male participation, the Jain community itself relies heavily on lay women's participation for religious education, the performance of key rituals, and the locus of religious knowledge. In this fieldwork-based study, Whitney Kelting attempts to reconcile these women's understanding of Jainism with the religion as presented in the existing scholarship. Jain women, she shows, both accept and rewrite the idealized roles received from religious texts, practices, and social expectation, according to which female religiosity is a symbol of Jain perfection. This volume describes these women's interpretations of their religion, not as folklore or popular religion, but as a theology that recreates Jainism in a form which honors their own participation.
