Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a novel Kalman filtering approach to the suppression of narrowband interference from direct sequence spread spectrum communications systems. The algorithm is based on the digital phase-locked loop Kalman filter. Because the interference is assumed to be much stronger than either the signal or noise, the Kalman filter locks onto a function related to the interference. The net result is an estimate of the phase of the interference and its amplitude. The algorithm is characterized through computer simulation for the case of narrowband Gaussian noise interference. Examples of the phase- and envelope-tracking capabilities of the algorithm are presented, followed by bit error rate curves for interference bandwidths ranging from 0.5% to 5.0% of the chip rate of the spread spectrum signal. The report concludes with three adaptive architectures.-The first is suitable for constant envelope interference; the second is a more general structure; and the third incorporate a decision-feedback structure accompanied with a training sequence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical report develops a theoretical bit error rate expression for a Kalman filtering technique that is used for filtering narrowband interferers out of direct sequence spread spectrum signals. The approach is based on the digital phase-locked loop Kalman filter and is close to optimum in so far as demodulating an FM-type of interferer. Because the interference is assumed to be much stronger than either the signal or noise, the Kalman filter locks onto the interference and produces estimates of its phase and envelope. Several assumptions are made in the development of the theoretical bit error rate expression and these are expanded upon. It is shown and illustrated that theory agrees well with simulation as long as the bandwidth of the low pass filter used to determine the envelope of the interference is much less than the sampling rate, otherwise the interference estimate at the input to the interference canceller will have significant cross-correlation with the signal, leading to some cancellation of the spread spectrum signal.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical note presents a Kalman filtering approach that is used for filtering narrowband interferers out of direct sequence spread spectrum signals. The algorithm is compared, through computer simulation, with the recursive least squares lattice algorithm for the case of a swept tone interferer. Examples of the phase- and envelope-tracking capabilities of the algorithm are presented, followed by bit error rate curves for the case of an interferer of bandwidth equal to 20% of the chip rate of the spread spectrum signal. The results show that with proper selection of the Kalman filter parameters, the Kalman filter excisor can outperform the recursive least squares algorithm by 2 dB. It is suggested that performance could perhaps be improved further by using a higher order Kalman filter to remove the residual phase-tracking error produced by the second order Kalman filter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall purpose of this research project was to seek new methods for improving the robustness and efficiency of spread-spectrum communications systems operating over non-Gaussian channels. The study was motivated in large part by the fact that modern military radio networks must operate in complex and variable noise environments that are often dominated by impulsive, non-Gaussian man-made noise sources. The research under this contract progressed in three basic areas: (1) optimum multiuser demodulation techniques; (2) direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access (DS/SSMA) signaling through impulsive channels; and (3) improved suppression of narrowband interferers from spread-spectrum signals. The common thread binding these three disparate multiuser-communications research topics is the fact that each involves the processing of signals in non-Gaussian interference. In the first case, the non-Gaussian interference is the multiuser noise interfering with the demodulation of a given user; in the second case, the non-Gaussian interference is the impulsive noise dominating the channel; and in the third case, the non-Gaussian interference is the spread-spectrum signal itself as it interferes with the prediction and consequent excision of the narrowband interferer.
