Book excerpt: This report presents a novel Kalman filtering approach to the suppression of narrowband interference from direct sequence spread spectrum communications systems. The algorithm is based on the digital phase-locked loop Kalman filter. Because the interference is assumed to be much stronger than either the signal or noise, the Kalman filter locks onto a function related to the interference. The net result is an estimate of the phase of the interference and its amplitude. The algorithm is characterized through computer simulation for the case of narrowband Gaussian noise interference. Examples of the phase- and envelope-tracking capabilities of the algorithm are presented, followed by bit error rate curves for interference bandwidths ranging from 0.5% to 5.0% of the chip rate of the spread spectrum signal. The report concludes with three adaptive architectures.-The first is suitable for constant envelope interference; the second is a more general structure; and the third incorporate a decision-feedback structure accompanied with a training sequence.

Book excerpt: This report develops a comprehensive theory of parallel Kalman filtering based on a unique decoupling principle permitting the predictor and corrector equations in the filter to be computed in parallel. Highly parallel algorithms and systolic architectures for efficiently implementing these advanced filtering techniques are presented. The application of these methods to Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) target tracking problems is also described. The PFK theory is well developed, mature and ready to proceed to full-scale validation on a parallel processing testbed. Because the PFK technology has been needed to solve several applications in the DoD for more than a decade, it is anticipated that once fully developed this technology can benefit several sectors of the DoD. This is possible because the necessary technology has only recently been available to transition the PKF theory into practice. Keywords: Computer architecture, Signal processing, Parallel processors. Book excerpt: Kalman filtering is an optimal state estimation process applied to a dynamic system that involves random perturbations. More precisely, the Kalman filter gives a linear, unbiased, and min imum error variance recursive algorithm to optimally estimate the unknown state of a dynamic system from noisy data taken at discrete real-time intervals. It has been widely used in many areas of industrial and government applications such as video and laser tracking systems, satellite navigation, ballistic missile trajectory estimation, radar, and fue control. With the recent development of high-speed computers, the Kalman filter has become more use ful even for very complicated real-time applications. lnspite of its importance, the mathematical theory of Kalman filtering and its implications are not well understood even among many applied mathematicians and engineers. In fact, most prac titioners are just told what the filtering algorithms are without knowing why they work so well. One of the main objectives of this text is to disclose this mystery by presenting a fairly thor ough discussion of its mathematical theory and applications to various elementary real-time problems. A very elementary derivation of the filtering equations is fust presented. By assuming that certain matrices are nonsingular, the advantage of this approach is that the optimality of the Kalman filter can be easily understood. Of course these assump tions can be dropped by using the more well known method of orthogonal projection usually known as the innovations approach.

Book excerpt: This technical note presents a Kalman filtering approach that is used for filtering narrowband interferers out of direct sequence spread spectrum signals. The approach is based on the digital phase-locked loop Kalman filter and is close to optimum in so far as demodulating an FM-type of interferer. Because the interference is assumed to be much stronger than either the signal or noise, the Kalman filter locks onto the interference and produces estimates of its phase and envelope. The algorithm is compared, through computer simulation, with the recursive least squares lattice algorithm for the case of a swept tone interferer. Examples of the phase- and envelope-tracking capabilities of the algorithm are presented, followed by bit error rate curves for the case of an interferer of bandwidth equal to 20% of the chip rate of the spread spectrum signal. The results show that with proper selection of the Kalman filter parameters, the Kalman filter excisor can outperform the recursive least squares algorithm by 2 dB. It is suggested that performance could perhaps be improved further by using a higher order Kalman filter to remove the residual phase-tracking error produced by the second order Kalman filter.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: State-of-the-art coverage of Kalman filter methods for the design of neural networks This self-contained book consists of seven chapters by expert contributors that discuss Kalman filtering as applied to the training and use of neural networks. Although the traditional approach to the subject is almost always linear, this book recognizes and deals with the fact that real problems are most often nonlinear. The first chapter offers an introductory treatment of Kalman filters with an emphasis on basic Kalman filter theory, Rauch-Tung-Striebel smoother, and the extended Kalman filter. Other chapters cover: An algorithm for the training of feedforward and recurrent multilayered perceptrons, based on the decoupled extended Kalman filter (DEKF) Applications of the DEKF learning algorithm to the study of image sequences and the dynamic reconstruction of chaotic processes The dual estimation problem Stochastic nonlinear dynamics: the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm and the extended Kalman smoothing (EKS) algorithm The unscented Kalman filter Each chapter, with the exception of the introduction, includes illustrative applications of the learning algorithms described here, some of which involve the use of simulated and real-life data. Kalman Filtering and Neural Networks serves as an expert resource for researchers in neural networks and nonlinear dynamical systems. An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available upon request from the Wiley Makerting Department.

In particular, to perform multi-dimensional Kalman filtering at sample rates approaching 15 KHz, innovative techniques are presented to partition the problem for real-time implementation. A unique decoupling of the predictor and corrector equations in the Kalman filter is developed to speed up computations by two (2) orders of magnitude (100x). The proposed parallel algorithms and architectures are well suited for recursive filtering, image and signal processing for next generation instrument radar and telemetry equipment. (RH).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical note presents an improved Kalman filter excisor for dealing with narrowband Gaussian noise. For this type of interference, both envelope and phase vary with time. Since the Kalman filter approach is close to optimum for interferers with constant or very slowly varying envelopes, performance for the narrowband Gaussian noise case will be significantly less than optimum. Ways and means of improving the performance by up to 5 dB are presented. These include the use of an alternate filtering approach to estimate the envelope to counter group delay effects, and phase-smoothing to suppress some of the additional noise caused by temporary loss of lock by the Kalman filter during those instants when the envelope changes sign.
