It is a record of adaptation to circumstances and potential opportunities, rather than any burning ambition to become rich or famous. However, the frequent changes in direction and necessary adaptation are certainly unusual. They provide unique and intimate glimpses into rarely described aspects of social history from before World War Two to post-Brexit Britain.

They capture what people were thinking during a critical time in the country’s history, from the July 2016 NATO Summit through to Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s 2019 landslide election victories. Decision makers, opinion makers, and other interesting people commented on events of the day as well as larger issues. Topics range from politics to sports, religion, history, war, books, diplomacy, health, business, art, holidays, foreign policy, anniversaries, public opinion to freedom of speech. Interview guests include Canada’s then Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, writer Andrey Kurkov, Crimean political prisoner Hennadii Afanasiev, who was tortured in 2014, Ukraine’s acting Health Minister Ulana Suprun, American analyst/journalist Brian Whitmore, UNHRC’s Pablo Mateu, ethnologist Ihor Poshyvailo, investment banker Olena Bilan, Tufts University’s Daniel Drezner, a cameo appearance by Boris Johnson, and many more. Together these interviews provide a unique, diverse, and kaleidoscopic perspective conveying the substance, atmosphere, and flavor of Ukraine while it was on the receiving end of a hybrid war from Russia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the context of recent, and ongoing, plural pandemics such as COVID-19 up/ending lives, social and racial chaos and catastrophe, political pressures, and economic convulsions, The Kaleidoscope of Lived Curricula: Learning Through a Confluence of Crises offers a journey through a collection of scholarly reflective creative pieces--stories of lived curricula. Like a kaleidoscope filled with loose pieces of simple colored glass and objects transforming into an infinite variety of beautiful forms and patterns with the slightest turn, the collection of pieces in this book reflect images of the sky that nurtures life; sun that illuminates understanding; earth that shifts and grounds us; fire that is primal, intending to spark and extend curricular and pedagogical conversations and understandings. This book provides a lens through which to observe and experience how plural pandemics shifted the lived curricula--the colored glass and objects in the lives of others--to surface, contextualize, confront, and curate challenges, as well as celebrate the courageous and elevate and empower marginalized groups to relate, learn, and heal through stories of lived curricula. This beautiful collection brings readers to an awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the lived curricula unlike they have ever experienced before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comparative study of the novels written by five German-speaking women - Anna Gmeyner, Selma Kahn, Hilde Spiel, Martina Wied and Hermynia Zur Mühlen - who had to flee National Socialist Central Europe. Gmeyner, Spiel, Wied and Zur Mühlen found refuge in Britain and thus added - together with male colleagues such as Stefan Zweig and Robert Neumann - an important but rarely investigated new dimension to the British literary landscape. The aim of this study is to reassess the women refugee writers' narrative strategies and integrate their work within feminist literary studies. The author investigates the five writers' narrativisation of everyday life, used to subvert the dominant discourse, and their portrayal of the intersection between class, racial and gender oppression. She also shows their innovative ways of picturing the gendered tension between the experiences of exile and exile as a modernist metaphor as well as their search for ways to refute the Nationalist Socialist rewriting of history. The book situates the novels within the theoretical discussions surrounding exile studies, social history and women's writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saga of The Montana Stranglers in Dakota Territory embodies the violence and vigilantism of the Old West In the early 1880s, desperate characters left over from the fur trade began robbing arriving settlers in the wilderness of Eastern Montana and Northwestern Dakota Territory. Gangs of horse thieves sprang out of camps from the Musselshell in Montana, along the Missouri into Dakota Territory, up into Mouse River-Dogden Butte country and ending at Turtle Mountain. Cattlemen and homesteaders formed vigilance committees, including Granville Stuart's Montana Stranglers, resulting in the violent death of fifty-four people from September 1883 to December 1884. They weren't all guilty and there were probably more. Author Ron Berget shares this thoroughly researched, true story of the Montana Stranglers' bloody pursuits throughout the northern plains.
