Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cigar Box Lithographs: Volume IV, written and compiled by Charles J. A. Humber, the fourth in a series showcases the author’s longtime passion for tobacco-related collectibles. Like the previous volumes, this beautifully illustrated book is a historical window into the world of cigar box ephemera. In the newest edition, Humber starts off in his signature style, with a deep dive into a rare collectible. In this case, it’s a cigar box, the inside cover emblazoned with the beloved Bard. Humber delves into the cigar box’s provenance (New York), then quickly shifts to Shakespeare’s enduring cachet, speaking about his plays, sonnets, and Ontario’s famous Stratford Festival. Also similar to its precursors, in Volume IV readers are once again treated to Humber’s chatty, erudite writing style; reading it no doubt makes Cigar Box Lithographs fans feel like they’re sitting down with a treasured friend enjoying a long and fascinating conversation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World War II fighter Ace’s previously unpublished draft—an account of the “Long Trek” from Normandy into the heart of the Third Reich itself. Having published two of his own books, Wing Leader and The Circle of Air Fighting, Air Vice-Marshal Johnnie Johnson co-authored several more with another fighter ace, namely Wing Commander P.B. “Laddie” Lucas. In 1997, the “AVM” suggested to his friend, the prolific author Dilip Sarkar, that the pair should collaborate on The Great Adventure. “Greycap Leader” was to produce a draft, after which Dilip would add the historical detail and comment. Sadly, the project was unfulfilled, because Johnnie became ill and passed away, aged eighty-five, in 2001. Years later, Johnnie’s eldest son, Chris, discovered the manuscript among his august father’s papers. In order to keep Johnnie’s memory evergreen, Chris turned to Dilip to finally see the project through to its conclusion. In this book Johnnie revisits certain aspects of his wartime service, including the development of tactical air cooperation with ground forces; his time as a Canadian wing leader in 1943, when the Spitfire Mk IX at last outclassed the Fw 190; and details his involvement in some of the most important battles of the defeat of Nazi Germany, including Operation Overlord and the D-Day landings in 1944, Operation Market Garden and the airborne assault at Arnhem, and the Rhine Crossings, throughout all of which Johnnie also commanded Canadian wings. Johnnie Johnson’s Great Adventure “brings to life the man of the book in such an interesting and heroic manner . . . if it wasn’t for these brave heroes we might not have won the war” (UK Historian).

Book excerpt: An accessible, timely, and stimulating introduction to the sociology of gender, The Kaleidoscope of Gender: Prisms, Patterns, and Possibilities, Third Edition, provides a comprehensive analysis of key ideas, theories, and applications in this field as viewed through the metaphor of a kaleidoscope. This collection of creative articles by top scholars explains how the complex, evolving pattern of gender is constructed interpersonally, institutionally, and culturally and challenges students to question how gender shapes their daily lives. Like the prior edition, the Third Edition maintains a focus on contemporary contributions to the field while incorporating classical and theoretical arguments to provide a broad framework. Integrating a cross-cultural focus and intersectional inquiry, this unique text/reader vividly illustrates that gender is a malleable continuum of prisms, patterns, and possibilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the context of recent, and ongoing, plural pandemics such as COVID-19 up/ending lives, social and racial chaos and catastrophe, political pressures, and economic convulsions, The Kaleidoscope of Lived Curricula: Learning Through a Confluence of Crises offers a journey through a collection of scholarly reflective creative pieces--stories of lived curricula. Like a kaleidoscope filled with loose pieces of simple colored glass and objects transforming into an infinite variety of beautiful forms and patterns with the slightest turn, the collection of pieces in this book reflect images of the sky that nurtures life; sun that illuminates understanding; earth that shifts and grounds us; fire that is primal, intending to spark and extend curricular and pedagogical conversations and understandings. This book provides a lens through which to observe and experience how plural pandemics shifted the lived curricula--the colored glass and objects in the lives of others--to surface, contextualize, confront, and curate challenges, as well as celebrate the courageous and elevate and empower marginalized groups to relate, learn, and heal through stories of lived curricula. This beautiful collection brings readers to an awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the lived curricula unlike they have ever experienced before.

Book excerpt: Pioneer aviatrix Jessie "Chubbie" Miller made a significant contribution to aviation history. The first woman to fly from England to her native Australia (as co-pilot with her close friend Captain Bill Lancaster), she was also the first woman to fly more than 8000 miles, to cross the equator in the air and to traverse the Australian continent north to south. Moving to America, Miller was a popular member of a group of female aviators that included Amelia Earhart, Bobby Trout, Pancho Barnes and Louise Thaden. As a competitor in international air races and a charter member of the first organization for women flyers, the Ninety-Nines, she quickly became famous. Her career was interrupted by her involvement in Lancaster's sensational Miami trial for the murder of her lover, Haden Clarke, and by Lancaster's disappearance a few years later while flying across the Sahara desert.

Book excerpt: "Boje does not reflect trends, he is among those who set them" - Hervé Corvellec, Department of Service Management, Lund University "How can I know what I think until I see what David Boje says? What he says about storytelling will forever change what we thought we knew about stories. With remarkable control over a complex argument, Boje recovers, re-punctuates, and re-animates a world of narrative and sensemaking that we have previously taken for granted!" - Karl E. Weick, Rensis Likert Distinguished University Professor of Organizational Behavior and Psychology,Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan "Few people understand stories and storytelling as well as David Boje. It is a measure of Boje′s success as a theorist that the word story can never reclaim the innocence and simplicity it once enjoyed. Nor, with the benefit of his work, can organizations be viewed as spaces which occasionally or incidentally spawn stories. Boje′s eagerly awaited book forces us to question many of our assumptions about storytelling; it also demands that we revise several of our assumptions about what organizations are" - Yiannis Gabriel, The School of Management, Royal Holloway University of London "Our company is made up of lots of stories. We′ve found that ′stories′ get told and retold and become the fabric of an organization. ′Policies′ lay unread in the company handbook or training manual. David Boje taught me the value of stories in an organization. Stories are the ′oil′ that makes the gears work. How do you get your message heard in an organization with thousands of people? David Boje taught me the value of telling stories at Stew Leonard′s!" - Stew Leonard Jr., Stew Leonard Organization "David Boje is one of the world′s leading authorities on storytelling. His work has influenced a generation of organizational theorists and students. He not only provides new ways of understanding organizations but also provides fresh insights into the way in which stories function to provide meanings" - Heather Höpfl, University of Essex The idea of organizations using `storytelling′ to make sense of themselves and their environment has generated a lot of excitement. Written by the leading scholar in this field, David Boje explores how narrative and storytelling is an important part of an organization′s strategy, development and learning processes. With excellent examples from Nike, McDonald′s and Disney, readers are shown how the theory that underpins organizational storytelling connects with storytelling in everyday organizational life. David Boje′s theories and ideas in relation to the study of storytelling in organizations are highly influential and this book will be a `must have′ for any student or scholar interested in the area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to offer a systematic account of feminist philosophy as a distinctive field of philosophy. The book introduces key issues and debates in feminist philosophy including: the nature of sex, gender, and the body; the relation between gender, sexuality, and sexual difference; whether there is anything that all women have in common; and the nature of birth and its centrality to human existence. An Introduction to Feminist Philosophy shows how feminist thinking on these and related topics has developed since the 1960s. The book also explains how feminist philosophy relates to the many forms of feminist politics. The book provides clear, succinct and readable accounts of key feminist thinkers including de Beauvoir, Butler, Gilligan, Irigaray, and MacKinnon. The book also introduces other thinkers who have influenced feminist philosophy including Arendt, Foucault, Freud, and Lacan. Accessible in approach, this book is ideal for students and researchers interested in feminist philosophy, feminist theory, women's studies, and political theory. It will also appeal to the general reader.
