Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout her life, author Lisa ONeal has faced an array of challenges—from suffering a stroke, to dealing with lupus, and battling cancer, among them. During this journey, she relied on her faith and wrote, documenting God’s presence, goodness, and promises. In Kaleidoscope Faith, she presents these narratives of day-to-day experiences. Sharing stories from the heart, it’s about seeing everyday life through a God’s perspective. It’s about seeing his beauty in what can sometimes feel like broken pieces. ONeal communicates that when we pause and view things from a different perspective, it can often change difficult situations into hope, joy, peace, and strength. It helps us look at our struggles in life with eyes of faith, allowing us to see God’s hand in everything.

Book excerpt: • A comprehensive resource for understanding the various components of spiritual direction • The first such resource written entirely by spiritual directors of color Early mystics of the Near East and northern Africa created the monastic traditions and were the first psychologists, exploring various practices to test the human capacity. In medieval times, spiritual direction was common in the Roman Catholic monastic traditions. It extended significantly into Protestant Christianity in the late twentieth century by predominantly white and affluent organizations. Spiritual direction has progressively become a global, multi-religious and interfaith practice. This book is a comprehensive and concise text from a spiritual director of color, offering inclusive resources and tools to spiritual directors of many faiths and for people of diverse cultures and traditions. Core skills such a deep listening, hospitality, and discernment are presented with cutting-edge lessons on internal liberation, systemic trauma, and imaginative discovery. Spiritual direction is taught by more than 100 educational institutions and spirituality centers in the US alone, but typical curriculum generally does not reflect current cultural reality and growing diversity. This is a textbook for anyone who studies spiritual direction as both preparation for and deepening of their calling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Joyce Coy was recreating mosaics of her adventures with words, she pictured her grandchildren from ages 7 to 25 who often asked, “Gramma, tell us a story about you.” Joyce has included naughty moments, the yearning and search to know God, and the tug of war between fears and faith. She has also given peeks into the cultural backdrop of the farming society of her youth in the 60’s and 70’s. Her wobbly times showcase God meeting her in specific ways. She unwraps the reality that Father God made a way through the unknowns of her life. His steady influence increased her trust. Even when her dearest love, her husband, had a sudden departure to heaven, Joyce could say, “It’s well with my soul, it’s okay.” Her objective in unzipping her heart is that each reader, youth or adult, will be supported on their personal footpath in knowing Him. What God has done for a modest grandma, He can also do for you.

Book excerpt: Is it possible for a simple, childlike toy, such as a kaleidoscope, to give hope, clarity, and meaning to all of the broken and shattered pieces of your life? In Kaleidoscope, Kelly Wiese deconstructs this simple yet complex toy by using each piece to illustrate how God is constantly at work, beautifully and carefully orchestrating a masterpiece with every aspect of your existence. In this unique and thought-provoking Bible study, you'll be challenged to see things from a fresh new perspective through the use of scripture, Bible stories, and real-life experiences. Kelly Wiese will walk you through each of the parts of a kaleidoscope, shedding new light on how each piece can help you to see beauty in your life and current situations that may seem painful or confusing otherwise. She then goes into depth discussing ways to stay connected and focused on God that will give you strength and guidance during the stormy transition periods of life as well. Each section is followed by study and personal application questions to further help you reflect upon and drive home the illustrations and stories she writes about. Kaleidoscope will leave you yearning to draw closer to God on a daily basis and help you see that everything you go through and experience in life is as unique and individual as the collection of colorful pieces inside of a kaleidoscope, with every scene adding up to one final masterpiece, handcrafted by our Heavenly Father.

Book excerpt: While the book is a kaleidoscope about personal growth, challenges in faith and faith communities, patriotism and country, one must understand that life itself is an ever-changing kaleidoscope. The passing of time is like rotating the cell with the cause and effect of changing designs and colors. A second principle of the kaleidoscope is the principle of multiple reflections. Such is life.Life is a progression into the future. It is always moving and changing as new opportunities and issues surface. The joy of life is to turn the cylinder and not only to see the colors, but to be engaged at focal points which enrich one's life and the lives of others. It is the people who do not just observe the colors, but become those who create the colors that change their world. Those who sit and do nothing will never change their own lives and will have no impact on the world in which they live.

Book excerpt: This is a book written primarily for gay Christians and those who love them. Part memoir, part pastoral-theological reflection, this book wrestles with three main areas of struggle that many gay Christians face: (1) What is God’s will for sexuality? (2) If the historic Christian tradition is right and same-sex behavior is ruled out, how should gay Christians deal with their resulting loneliness? (3) How can gay Christians come to an experience of grace that rescues them from crippling feelings of shame and guilt? Author Wesley Hill is not advocating that it is possible for every gay Christian to become straight, nor is he saying that God affirms homosexuality. Instead, Hill comes alongside gay Christians and says, “You are not alone. Here is my experience; it’s like yours. And God is with us. We can share in God’s grace.” While some authors profess a deep faith in Christ and claim a powerful experience of the Holy Spirit precisely in and through their homosexual practice, Hill’s own story, by contrast, is a story of feeling spiritually hindered, rather than helped, by his homosexuality. His story testifies that homosexuality was not God’s original creative intention for humanity—that it is, on the contrary, a tragic sign of human nature and relationships being fractured by sin—and therefore that homosexual practice goes against God’s express will for all human beings, especially those who trust in Christ. This book is written mainly for those homosexual Christians who are trying to walk the narrow path of celibacy and are convinced that their discipleship to Jesus necessarily commits them to the demanding, costly obedience of choosing not to nurture their homosexual desires. With reflections from the lives of Henri Nouwen and Gerard Manley Hopkins, Wesley Hill encourages and challenges Christians with homosexual desires to live faithful to God’s plan for human sexuality.

Book excerpt: “I used to be a lesbian.” In Gay Girl, Good God, author Jackie Hill Perry shares her own story, offering practical tools that helped her in the process of finding wholeness. Jackie grew up fatherless and experienced gender confusion. She embraced masculinity and homosexuality with every fiber of her being. She knew that Christians had a lot to say about all of the above. But was she supposed to change herself? How was she supposed to stop loving women, when homosexuality felt more natural to her than heterosexuality ever could? At age nineteen, Jackie came face-to-face with what it meant to be made new. And not in a church, or through contact with Christians. God broke in and turned her heart toward Him right in her own bedroom in light of His gospel. Read in order to understand. Read in order to hope. Or read in order, like Jackie, to be made new.

Each time you turn the tube the beads of glass would form different shapes and patterns, one more beautiful than the other. Writing this book, it reminded me of how life is. Take Ms. Ellie, who reaches out to help a young widow, not knowing the depth of pain this family faces. Ms. Ellie must face even her own dark secret. "Harold Winslow" begins with a car crash, the same day his mom and sister dies, but then there is the remarkable witness. In "The Visitor" Mildred Stark is a lonely widow with a son she never sees. Her life is interrupted by two strangers and a baby, unfolding the feelings she had long buried. "Crossing Over": When a man's wife-whom you killed-keeps visiting you, how do you take this second chance, when crime is all you've known? "Remy": Remy's man won her in a card game. What happens when you get sick of being abused? Where do you run to? Each story has its own twist and turn. As you read each story let the words take shape...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Invention of the Kaleidoscope is a book of poetic elegies that discuss failures: failures of love, both sexual and spiritual; failures of the body; failures of science, art and technology; failures of nature, imagination, memory and, most importantly, the failures inherent to elegiac narratives and our formal attempt to memoralize the lost. But the book also explores the necessity of such narratives, as well as the creative possibilities implicit within the “failed elegy,” all while examining the various ways that self-destruction can turn into self-preservation.
