Book excerpt: Black Teachers on Teaching is an honest and compelling account of the politics and philosophies involved in the education of black children during the last fifty years. Michele Foster talks to those who were the first to teach in desegregated southern schools and to others who taught in large urban districts, such as Boston, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. All go on record about the losses and gains accompanying desegregation, the inspirations and rewards of teaching, and the challenges and solutions they see in the coming years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although more and more students have the test scores and transcripts to get into college, far too many are struggling once they get there. These students are surprised to find that college coursework demands so much more of them than high school. For the first time, they are asked to think deeply, write extensively, document assertions, solve non-routine problems, apply concepts, and accept unvarnished critiques of their work. College Knowledge confronts this problem by looking at the disconnect between what high schools do and what colleges expect and proposes a solution by identifying what students need to know and be able to do in order to succeed. The book is based on an extensive three-year project sponsored by the Association of American Universities in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts. This landmark research identified what it takes to succeed in entry-level university courses. Based on the project's findings - and interviews with students, faculty, and staff - this groundbreaking book delineates the cognitive skills and subject area knowledge that college-bound students need to master in order to succeed in today's colleges and universities. These Standards for Success cover the major subject areas of English, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, second languages, and the arts.

Book excerpt: THE HANDBOOK THAT BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES AND BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS The focus in the "Standard Handbook of Biomedical Engineering and Design" is on engineering design informed by description and analysis using engineering language and methodology. Over 40 experts from universities and medical centers throughout North America, the United Kingdom, and Israel have produced a practical reference for the biomedical professional who is seeking to solve a wide range of engineering and design problems, whether to enhance a diagnostic or therapeutic technique, reduce the cost of manufacturing a medical instrument or a prosthetic device, improve the daily life of a patient with a disability, or increase the effectiveness of a hospital department. Heavily illustrated with tables, charts, diagrams, and photographs, most of them original, and filled with equations and useful references, this handbook speaks directly to all practitioners involved in biomedical engineering, whatever their training and areas of specialization. Coverage includes not only fundamental principles, but also numerous recent advances in this fast moving discipline. Major sections include: * Biomedical Systems Analysis * Mechanics of the Human Body * Biomaterials * Bioelectricity * Design of Medical Devices and Diagnostic Instrumentation * Engineering Aspects of Surgery * Rehabilitation Engineering * Clinical Engineering The "Handbook" offers breadth and depth of biomedical engineering design coverage unmatched in any other general reference.

Book excerpt: Beyond Karel J Robot trades comprehensive coverage of Java low level detail for an understanding of how a language like Java is used to build real programs. It's organization is not that of a reference work, but an enfolding of interesting and necessary concepts used by real programmers. A number of users have asked for more material in the spirit of Karel J Robot. The original book is intended for only the beginning weeks of a course, which leaves some the dilemma of what to do for the rest of the term. This volume is an attempt to discuss some additional ideas as well as some more Java features. The chapter numbering begins where Karel J Robot leaves off and we will frequently make mention of what was learned there. However, we begin to leave the robot world here and will discuss many ideas from beyond that world. The two volumes together should form the basis of a first course in computing using Java. While I have generally followed the guidelines of the College Board recommendations for the APCS AB advanced placement course, I have not attempted to be encyclopedic. We will see int, double, char, etc., but no attempt was made to provide all the rules and caveats of such things. Many books that call themselves text-books seem to me to be, instead, reference works, with everything gathered together nicely to ease looking up information, rather than books to learn from. Instead, I have attempted to show, for the most part, how the features of Java are used to build real programs. This is a book about writing programs, including some quite interesting and difficult programs. You may struggle with some of this material, but the struggle will take you to a better place. I hope you agree that it is worth the work you will put in to it.
