Book excerpt: Abstract: Personnel screening using psychological measures has become a standard practice in the field of corrections. Moreover, there is empirical evidence to demonstrate that personality tests can predict performance of employees in high risk occupations, such as police, correctional officers, and firefighters. The present study examined the relationship between scores of 99 juvenile correctional officers on the Inwald Personality Inventory (IPI), Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2)- Revised Personnel Report, and the Sixteen Personality Factors-5th Edition (16PF), a behavioral rating and an employee's 120 day probationary evaluation, to three performance indicators (disciplinary actions, use of sick leave and rehire status). Although results failed to demonstrate the ability of these measures, both independently or in combination, to predict counterproductive work behaviors, several scales significantly differentiated group membership for each category of job performance. These differences may help direct future research in this area.

Book excerpt: Juvenile correctional officers (JCOs) are entrusted with the stressful and often thankless job of providing care to our nation's troubled youth. They must embrace the ideals of youth service while practicing the role of a correctional officer. These two standards are often conflicting. However, their interactions with youth are important because these adolescents will one day become active members of society. JCOs can help determine if they are thriving participants or burdens to the public. Thus, it is important that the individuals given this important responsibility are not only capable but also successful. As they become weary and burnt out, they start to have a negative instead of positive impact on the youth under their care which only contributes to the failure of our already struggling juvenile justice system. The question of this research project is whether a list of characteristics found among successful juvenile correctional officers in Ohio can be ascertained. There are three primary questions of this research. The first asks if a list of characteristics of a successful juvenile correctional officer can be ascertained. The second question asked by this research is whether experience or education is valued in juvenile correctional officers. The final question asked by this research is whether the age, sex, or years of experience affect the opinions of juvenile detention center supervisors in regards to what qualities they value in their juvenile correctional officers. In order to answer these questions, surveys were sent to each of the 40 juvenile detention center supervisors in Ohio. A total of 27 surveys were received for a response rate of 65.7%. Responses indicated that professionalism, teamwork, and attendance/promptness are considered to be the most important factors of successful juvenile correctional officers. Additionally, experience is valued higher over education. Based on the characteristics of the respondents, only a few patterns could be ascertained among their answers. While all supervisors rated professionalism highly, those in their 30s were more likely to rate it as the most important characteristic among juvenile correctional officers. Men were also more likely to rate professionalism as the most important characteristic. Another difference was found in regards to how men and women rate empathy. Male respondents were more likely than female respondents to rate empathy higher as an important characteristic. This study was not a task analysis of juvenile correctional officers in Ohio and is not meant to document hiring criteria per se. The findings, however, do suggest issues and personal characteristics that could be part of background investigations and/or training programs.

Book excerpt: Job stress in criminal justice occupations has been the subject of research since the mid-1970s. Employees who perceive their jobs as stressful may experience potential negative outcomes related to job stress: higher rates of turnover intent, higher rates of burnout, lower levels of job satisfaction, and lower levels of organizational commitment. These potential negative outcomes can be costly to organizations in terms of budget (salaries and training), productivity, the morale of other employees, and a reduction in terms of the quality of services provided to criminal justice clientele. While all jobs have the potential to be stressful, at least at times, there may be individual characteristics that moderate the relationships between experiencing job stress and the potential negative outcomes that may result from job stress. There is considerable job stress research conducted with police officer and institutional corrections officer populations. Few studies focus on community corrections, particularly juvenile probation officers. This research addresses the lack of job stress research on juvenile probation officers by surveying a population of juvenile probation officers in the state of Texas In general, juvenile probation officers in this sample identified their organizations as being fair, reported high or very high levels of job satisfaction, have a balance between job demands and job control, and only 33.9% reported high levels of stress. Organizational commitment levels were high and turnover intent was low for this sample. Most of the hypothesized moderating relationships were not supported by the data in this study, with two exceptions: race and ethnicity. Non-white officers reported lower levels of turnover intent when experiencing job stress than white officers. Non-Hispanic officers reported higher levels of job satisfaction when experiencing job stress than Hispanic officers.
