Book Synopsis The Book and the Right by : Maynard Miller
Download or read book The Book and the Right written by Maynard Miller and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pilgrims journeyed toward the New World with a distinct purpose in mind. They left behind a life dissatisfying to them and arrived with a vision of liberty and hope. They held within themselves the seeds of a nation exceptional in all of history. Their convictions paved the way for the colonists, who would eventually give form and substance to a government based on the truth of the ages. A unique nation-a nation under God-would arise and seize the God-given right to live free, offer opportunity and realize prosperity. But contrary to the settlers' and founders' principles, alien elements have arisen in recent years to challenge the American ideal and threaten the foundation of the republic. Forces foreign to the Constitution are producing radical changes in our cultural and political life, and "one nation under God" has become "one nation under siege." The Book and The Right examines those qualities that have made America exceptional, but that are endangered at the present time, and looks in detail at the causes that are putting her at serious risk. It appraises her current direction and stresses the steps she must take to return to the course of her originally chosen destiny. The Book and The Right addresses a subject long held taboo and goes to the heart of the issue for answers. The author draws on historical, theological, psychological and political data to pursue the truth and call America back to her roots. Maynard Miller holds degrees from Asbury College, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Kentucky. He has been a psychotherapist, administrator and college teacher in the mental health/human service field. A frequent speaker and writer, he is a leader in national and international service projects. His previous book is The Face in the Mirror.

Download or read book Inventive Methods written by Celia Lury and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social and cultural research has changed dramatically in the last few years in response to changing conceptions of the empirical, an intensification of interest in interdisciplinary work, and the growing need to communicate with diverse users and audiences. Methods texts, however, have not kept pace with these changes. This volume provides a set of new approaches for the investigation of the contemporary world. Building on the increasing importance of methodologies that cut across disciplines, more than twenty expert authors explain the utility of 'devices' for social and cultural research – their essays cover such diverse devices as the list, the pattern, the event, the photograph, the tape recorder and the anecdote. This fascinating collection stresses the open-endedness of the social world, and explores the ways in which each device requires the user to reflect critically on the value and status of contemporary ways of making knowledge. With a range of genres and styles of writing, each chapter presents the device as a hinge between theory and practice, ontology and epistemology, and explores whether and how methods can be inventive. The book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of sociology and cultural studies.

Download or read book On Parchment written by Bruce Holsinger and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping exploration of the shaping role of animal skins in written culture and human imagination over three millennia “Richly detailed and illustrated. . . . An engaging exploration of book history.”—Kirkus Reviews For centuries, premodern societies recorded and preserved much of their written cultures on parchment: the rendered skins of sheep, cows, goats, camels, deer, gazelles, and other creatures. These remains make up a significant portion of the era’s surviving historical record. In a study spanning three millennia and twenty languages, Bruce Holsinger explores this animal archive as it shaped the inheritance of the Euro-Mediterranean world, from the leather rolls of ancient Egypt to the Acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom. Holsinger discusses the making of parchment past and present, the nature of the medium as a biomolecular record of faunal life and environmental history, the knotty question of “uterine vellum,” and the imaginative role of parchment in the works of St. Augustine, William Shakespeare, and a range of Jewish rabbinic writers of the medieval era. Closely informed by the handicraft of contemporary makers, painters, and sculptors, the book draws on a vast array of sources—codices and scrolls, documents and ephemera, works of craft and art—that speak to the vitality of parchment across epochs and continents. At the center of On Parchment is the vexed relationship of human beings to the myriad slaughtered beasts whose remains make up this vast record: a relationship of dominion and compassion, of brutality and empathy.
