Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shocking story of the unresolved murder of baby Deidre Kennedy. As her parent's slept on Friday April 13, 1973 17-month old Deidre Kennedy was snatched from her cot. Tossed like trash on top of a toilet block in a nearby park, dawn revealed the obscenity of her murder. Dressed in women's underwear, her chubby thigh showed bruising inflicted by bite marks. She had been bashed, sexually assaulted and strangled. There was no eyewitness. No motive. No confession. No closure for Deidre's family. Three decades on, they are still waiting. In 1985 - eleven years after her death - former RAAF technician Raymond John Carroll was found guilty of her murder and later acquitted on appeal. In 2000, he was found guilty of perjury on the grounds that he lied when he said he did not kill the baby. Acquitted for the second time - this time on double jeopardy - the case went all the way to the Australian High Court, which dismissed the Crown's appeal. He could never be re-tried again. A bewildered Australian public, at a loss to understand the technicalities of the law clamoured for explanations. Late in 2003 the United Kingdom successfully passed a Bill that modified the rule of double jeopardy. The Crown now has a right to appeal acquittals when 'new and compelling evidence' comes to light - laws which operate retrospectively. In Australia, change has been excruciatingly slow. This is an intensely personal story about the casualties of murder: private lives thrown open to public scrutiny, families shattered by grief and a loss of faith in the judicial system. Against legal advice and for the first time, Raymond John Carroll and his family spoke to Debi Marshall about the crime for which he has been twice accused and which, despite two acquittals, continues to haunt him. Informed by interviews with Deidre's shattered family, police, lawyers and forensic scientists,Justice in Jeopardy is a thought-provoking and harrowing true story that will make you weep. For Deidre, whose short life and appalling death spearheaded the call for an overhaul of an ancient law called Double Jeopardy; for her heartbroken family whose lives have been ruined by her murder and for justice denied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout her entire career, Judge Polier continually fought for the rights and needs of the poor. In this volume she describes the granting and denial of justice toward the poor -- particluarly poor children -- she observed during her tenure as a Family Court Judge in New York City. The book discusses the current state of the justice system and the outlook for the future. This volume helps readers understand how broadly shared the responsibility for the neglect of today's youth is and how society must reshape its attitudes and realign its priorities to help the thousands of children who are dependent upon the public for care and support. The book identifies how the courts have been weakened by their loss of direct contact with delinquent and neglected children and the "need for humanity and respect in dealing with difficult human problems." (from the introduction). From her personal experiences and observations, Judge Polier describes the granting and denial of justice she observed while she consistently emphasizes the need for direct contact with delinquent and neglected children. For students, professional, and researchers in sociology, criminal justice, and any social science discipline dealing with children and children's problems, Polier's book provides a behind-the-scenes look at one of the major problems facing society today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first-century world of juvenile justice policy and practice, nearly everyone agrees that one of the most pressing issues facing the nation's juvenile courts is their proper response to delinquent youths with mental disorders. Recent research indicates that about two-thirds of adolescent offenders in juvenile justice facilities meet the criteria for one or more mental disorders. What are the obligations of our juvenile justice system, then, as the caretaker for delinquent youth with such disabilities? How do issues of adolescent development create special challenges in determining the court's proper response to delinquents with special mental health needs? Thomas Grisso considers these questions while offering new information to assist the juvenile justice system in its responses to the needs of our children. Double Jeopardy considers the newest data on the nature of youths' mental disorders—their relationships to delinquency, the values and limits of methods to treat them, and the common patterns of adolescent offending. That information is used to chart a rational course for fulfilling the juvenile justice system's duty—as a custodian of children in need of health care, as a legal system promoting fairness in youth adjudication, and as a protector of public safety—to respond to delinquent youths' mental disorders. Moreover, Double Jeopardy provides a scientific yet practical foundation for lawmakers, judges, attorneys, and mental health care professionals, as well as researchers who must fill the knowledge gaps that limit the juvenile justice system's abilities to meet youths' mental health needs.

Book excerpt: In the first book-length work on the subject in over a quarter century, George C. Thomas III advances an integrated theory of double jeopardy law, a theory anchored in historical, doctrinal, and philosophical method. Tracing American double jeopardy doctrine back to twelfth-century English law, Thomas develops a jurisprudential account of double jeopardy that recognizes the central role of the legislature in creating criminal law blameworthiness. His theory, based on blameworthiness, allows today's courts to move toward a coherent double jeopardy doctrine.

Does the ingenuousness of children assure that their testimony will always be truthful? Or are children easily misled by overzealous investigators and therapists into making untrue allegations? Stephen J. Ceci and Maggie Bruck contend that the truth falls somewhere between these extremes. Using case studies ranging from the Salem Witch Hunt to the Little Rascals Day Care case to illustrate their argument, Jeopardy in the Courtroom draws from the vast corpus of scientific research to clarify what is most relevant for evaluating and understanding children's statements made in the legal arena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six American men live behind a protective façade, their real work hidden from neighbors and friends. Different in countless ways, they are intimately the same in one: at any moment their lives can be altered with a phone call, and their actions may change the world. They are Special Ops. And one team’s mission is about to hit certain jeopardy status when the discovery of an Al Qaeda base in Venezuela becomes secondary to thwarting the transport of a nuclear weapons expert from that training camp to Iran. Informed by the true combat experience of Captain Jeff Struecker and finessed by award-winning novelist Alton Gansky, Certain Jeopardy is an immersing and pulsating fictional account of what really happens at every level of a stealth engagement: the physical enemy encounter, the spiritual war fought within a soldier, and the emotional battles in families back at home. Endorsements: Certain Jeopardy by Jeff Struecker and Alton Gansky is like the TV show The Unit on steroids! A group of six men appear to live normal American lives, but at any time they can be called to report to a Special Operations group performing actions for the safety of their country at the risk of their lives. The men are called to Venezuela to investigate rumors of a Al-Qaeda training camp. Instead they stumble into the kidnapping of a nuclear scientist who can empower Iran to create their own nuclear weapons. To rescue him and his family that is being held hostage for his cooperation will force them to use every skill they know and may cost them their lives. I'm not usually a fan of military thrillers, but this book grabbed me on page one and didn't let go until I finally remembered to breathe again at the end. Struecker has served several tours of duty himself, so the writing gives an inside look at secret military operations and the incredible amount of skill and fortitude needed by its members. The action is written so that every scene is almost cinematic; I could see it play out in my head. Interspersed are scenes of the families at home coping with never knowing where their loved ones are or if they will come home. Together they create a powerful look at Army life. I hope that the authors will revisit this team, because I would love to read more! --Christy's book blog

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its debut in 1964, Jeopardy! has been one of America’s favorite and longest-running daytime quiz shows. It turns the question-answer format of traditional quiz shows on its head and requires contestants to pose correct questions to answers in selected categories. While mining information and facts from Alchemy to Zoology, Jeopardy!, is a uniquely intellectual, erudite, and challenging daytime television program. Far beyond entertaining its fans with nail-biting contests of knowledge, memory, and speed, it all but requires them to participate. Few people watch Jeopardy! without pressing an invisible button and blurting out questions to their TV screen. Because of this personal and intellectual investment, most Jeopardy! fans are devout. Watching the show is valued as a daily ritual in which genuine intellectual skill and encyclopedic knowledge (as opposed to thin Hollywood depictions such as those in Big Bang Theory or Rain Man) are not only respected and placed in the spotlight, but also rewarded with national prestige and prize winnings. Champion Ken Jennings (who contributes to this volume) has won over three million dollars and remained champion seventy-four times. For those who embrace Jeopardy! as an intellectual oasis in the arid desert of popular culture, it is the geeks who shall inherit the earth. Jeopardy!’s celebration of intellect and forward-thinking is well recognized throughout popular culture and among all age groups. Ken Jennings, Chuck Forrest, and other all-time champions are near celebrities, while the show itself regularly reaches out through special tournaments to different segments of American culture, such as actors and musicians (Celebrity Jeopardy!), high-school and college students (Teen Tournament and College Championship Jeopardy!) and senior citizens (Senior Tournament Jeopardy!). Still, despite its widespread respect and, some might complain, smug self-respect, neither the show nor its fans take themselves too seriously. Jokes about host Alex Trebek’s hair and famous parodies of Jeopardy! on Saturday Night Live are as familiar as Weird Al Yankovic’s MTV-mainstay “I Lost on Jeopardy!” (to the tune of “Our Love’s in Jeopardy”): Don't know what I was thinkin' of, I guess I just wasn't too bright. Well, I sure hope I do better Next weekend on The Price Is Right.

Book excerpt: Triple Jeopardy is a book about resilience written in a powerful, inspiring way. It’s a wakeup call that iterates that you are in control of your own story, no matter the circumstances. ~ Mike Tyson, Former Undisputed Boxing Champion, Best Selling Author, Actor WOW! Triple Jeopardy is a remarkable story that reveals intimate details about the author and her family’s encounter with the criminal justice system. It is emotionally moving, enlightening, thought-provoking, informative, even humorous at times and provides valuable life lessons. This book is a must-read from start to finish. ~ Flavor Flav, Hip-hop Rapper “When I first met Rita Ali, I had just begun working with Mike Tyson on his autobiography, Undisputed Truth. I was far away from my wife and dog back in New York, but Rita, Mike’s mother-in-law, immediately adopted me and made me feel welcome and, ultimately, one of the family. Each day I had some time to kill waiting for Mike to finish up some other business or tend to his pigeons until we could resume our taped interviews, and Rita helped to fill the time by regaling me with stories of her life back in Philadelphia. She had willed herself into being one of the few females to penetrate the world of boxing, first as a reporter and later as a publicist. Her stories of her interactions with Muhammad Ali, Don King, Joe Frazier, were so compelling that I urged her to write her own book! And I suggested it even more forcefully after she related to me the sordid details of her and her family’s persecution by the federal government for crimes that they didn’t commit. Rita went to work and now we have Triple Jeopardy. But rather than being a “woe-is-me” account, her memoir is an empowering document that proves the old adage that you can’t keep a good woman down. You’ll enjoy the anecdotes of the rich and famous celebrities that Rita has crossed paths with but you’ll have to admire the strength, discipline and wisdom that Rita imparts when recounting an overzealous prosecution gone awry. Far from broken, Rita and her lovely family have risen from the ashes of defamation like Phoenixes. “Their story is a cautionary tale that shows that it CAN happen here. And does.” ~ Larry “Ratso” Sloman, co-author with Mike Tyson of Undisputed Truth and Iron Ambition: My Life with Cus D’Amato http://www.ratso.org A woman who has always exhibited beauty, strength and grace, in her memoir Triple Jeopardy, Rita Ali proves that you can always knock-out the opposition. ~ Michael Spinks, Olympic Gold Medalist, Two Division World Champion
