This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish Yearbook of International Law (IYIL) supports research into Ireland's practice in international affairs and foreign policy, filling a gap in existing legal scholarship and assisting in the dissemination of Irish thinking and practice on matters of international law. On an annual basis, the Yearbook presents peer-reviewed academic articles and book reviews on general issues of international law. Designated correspondents provide reports on international law developments in Ireland, Irish practice in international bodies, Ireland and the Law of the Sea and the law of the European Union as relevant to developments in Ireland. In addition, the Yearbook reproduces key documents that reflect Irish practice on contemporary issues of international law. Publication of The Irish Yearbook of International Law makes Irish practice and opinio juris more readily available to governments, academics and international bodies when determining the content of international law. In providing a forum for the documentation and analysis of North-South relations the Yearbook also makes an important contribution to post-conflict and transitional justice studies internationally. As a matter of editorial policy, the Yearbook seeks to promote a multilateral approach to international affairs, reflecting and reinforcing Ireland's long-standing commitment to multilateralism as a core element of foreign policy. The tenth volume of The Irish Yearbook of International Law engages with contemporary issues in international law, raising questionsboth as to the conceptual underpinnings of international law in relation to the Responsibility to Protect doctrine, and state practice in fields such as Law of the Sea and belligerent occupation, prosecution of war crimes in domestic courts, and the evolving field of international disability law.
Book Synopsis British Justice, War Crimes and Human Rights Violations by : Susan L. Kemp
Download or read book British Justice, War Crimes and Human Rights Violations written by Susan L. Kemp and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the UK approach to investigating international crimes and serious human rights violations. In 2010, the United Nations Secretary General referred to the emerging system of international justice, including the creation of the International Criminal Court, as the ‘Age of Accountability.’ However, the UK has sometimes struggled to comply with its international law obligations. Using examples from the post-World War II period to 2018, interviews with leading UK military lawyers and newly disclosed official documents, this work explains the legal duties, how the UK military and civilian justice systems investigate alleged military misconduct and highlights the challenges involved. It provides suggestions on strengthening domestic law and policy and its importance for the UK’s legitimacy as an exporter of rule of law expertise. This text is essential reading for practitioners, academics, government officials and students of international, criminal, humanitarian or human rights law.

Download or read book The UK Media Law Pocketbook written by Tim Crook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As media law becomes more complicated and some of the leading textbooks thicker and larger, this concise guide provides core information without patronizing those with existing knowledge or bamboozling those with little expertise. Suitable for journalists, media workers, and anyone in the cultural or publishing industries, the book engages and addresses the Internet and blogging, social networking, instant messaging, digital multi-media publication and consumption as well as traditional print and broadcast. Each chapter covers substantive 'black letter law' and regulation/ethics, and kept in mind throughout will be the difference in duties and obligations between words and pictures, print and broadcasting. The focus is on the law relating to England & Wales, but with references to key differences to bear in mind in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Chapters start with bullet points, then flesh out the details and summarize pitfalls to avoid. Readers are left in no doubt about liabilities and potential penalties. Anticipating a dynamically changing arena, the text is also backed up by downloadable sound podcasts, videocasts, Internet source links throughout the book text, and a companion website so that any significant updates are immediately accessible direct from the ebook. Download or read book Control orders in 2011 written by David Anderson and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control orders were preventative measures, intended to protect members of the public from the risk of terrorism by imposing restraints on those suspected of involvement in terrorism-related activity. They have now been replaced with Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures (TPIMs). Control orders were made against 52 people over the lifetime of the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2005. All were men, suspected of involvement in Islamist terrorism. The duration of the orders was between a few months to more than four-and-a-half years. At the start of the control order regime in 2005, all controlled persons were foreign nationals. By the end of 2011, all were British citizens. The publication is divided into seven chapters with ten annexes: Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Control orders in context; Chapter 3: How the system worked; Chapter 4: Use of control orders in 2011; Chapter 5: Terrorism prevention and investigation measures; Chapter 6: Conclusions; Chapter 7: Recommendation.

Book Synopsis Crime, Shame and Reintegration by : John Braithwaite
Download or read book Crime, Shame and Reintegration written by John Braithwaite and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-03-23 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime, Shame and Reintegration is a contribution to general criminological theory. Its approach is as relevant to professional burglary as to episodic delinquency or white collar crime. Braithwaite argues that some societies have higher crime rates than others because of their different processes of shaming wrongdoing. Shaming can be counterproductive, making crime problems worse. But when shaming is done within a cultural context of respect for the offender, it can be an extraordinarily powerful, efficient and just form of social control. Braithwaite identifies the social conditions for such successful shaming. If his theory is right, radically different criminal justice policies are needed - a shift away from punitive social control toward greater emphasis on moralizing social control. This book will be of interest not only to criminologists and sociologists, but to those in law, public administration and politics who are concerned with social policy and social issues.
