Book excerpt: Red Queen meets The Scorpio Races in a high-flying new fantasy series filled with passion, betrayal, and adventure from debut author Shina Reynolds. Seventeen-year-old Aluma Banks has always dreamed of soaring freely through the skies astride a powerful winged steed of her own. But flying is a privilege granted only to the Riders of the king's Empyrean Cavalry, the aerial warriors who defend the borders of their land from the fallen kingdom of Laithlann. Each year, Rider hopefuls across Eirelannia compete in the Autumn Tournament for the honor of joining the Cavalry. Aluma, trained to ride and fight by her retired Empyrean Rider father, knows she has what it takes to prove herself worthy-if only her father hadn't forbidden her from joining their ranks, in the hope of protecting his only daughter from the perils of war. To make matters worse, Thayer, Aluma's best friend who could be becoming something more, is competing-and if he wins, he'll leave her behind. When Aluma's father is tragically injured just before the Tournament, she finds herself unexpectedly thrust into this year's competition. But as Aluma begins to pursue her dreams, she learns devastating secrets about the king and his never-ending war with Laithlann. In her quest for the truth, Aluma discovers a power deep within herself that may be the only way to save Eirelannia and the people she loves from the darkness that threatens to consume them all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty case studies explaining how to gently deliver a range of life's most awkward messages while causing minimal harm. Life constantly requires us to give other people some hugely awkward messages: that we don't love them anymore; that we do love them (though we're not meant to); that they smell a bit; that they're fired; that we're furious with them (though we adore them) or that their music is too loud... Often, out of embarrassment, we just stay quiet. Occasionally we explode. And typically, we stumble about, looking for the right words - dreading that we didn't find them and thereby causing more hurt than we should. This is a book to help us locate the best possible words to get across a range of life's most difficult messages. With twenty case studies drawn from relationships, friendships, work, our families, and social situations, we are gently shown what we might - in an ideal world - find ourselves saying to make our intentions known while causing minimal harm. We are guided, among other topics, to how best to end a relationship, how to make it up with a child, and how gently to let down a friend who wants more. We laugh, we recognize our troubles - and we're introduced to a range of deeply empathetic ways to navigate some of our most acute social dilemmas.

Book excerpt: The nation's premier communications expert shares his wisdom on how the words we choose can change the course of business, of politics, and of life in this country In Words That Work, Luntz offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the tactical use of words and phrases affects what we buy, who we vote for, and even what we believe in. With chapters like "The Ten Rules of Successful Communication" and "The 21 Words and Phrases for the 21st Century," he examines how choosing the right words is essential. Nobody is in a better position to explain than Frank Luntz: He has used his knowledge of words to help more than two dozen Fortune 500 companies grow. Hell tell us why Rupert Murdoch's six-billion-dollar decision to buy DirectTV was smart because satellite was more cutting edge than "digital cable," and why pharmaceutical companies transitioned their message from "treatment" to "prevention" and "wellness." If you ever wanted to learn how to talk your way out of a traffic ticket or talk your way into a raise, this book's for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since early childhood, I was a person who stutters (PWS). I also loved hockey and writing. Growing up as a PWS came with its share of challenges. I was bullied, mocked, doubted, and even dismissed because I had considerable difficulty speaking. These were catalysts to long-term depression, leading me to doubt myself as a successful person. As an escape, I would write. While I loved writing stories and screenplays, nothing gave me more pleasure than writing about my favourite teams and players, commenting on their victories and even defeats. It wasn't until I was an adult, though, that I wanted to be a regular sportswriter. Unfortunately, due to being a PWS, I couldn't conduct phone or in-person interviews. Or so I thought. For years, I had limited myself due to my stutter. However, during a dark time in my life, I decided that something needed to change. With new, creative methods, I gave interviewing a try. Lo and behold, it worked. Since then, I have interviewed hundreds in the sports industry while having the privilege of covering some major events and writing for some major platforms. In this book, I take you on my journey as a sportswriter who stutters. This includes some important people in my life who helped me achieve what I've always wanted to on a journey filled with its share of sadness and frustration but also perseverance and vindication. I hope you enjoy reading my story as much as I've enjoyed telling it. Read on and enjoy!
