Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author coined the phrase "ChristiANTity" and explores an analogy between ants and people stating that while ants are no bigger than a paperclip, these insects are unique, social, live in colonies, and most importantly, each one has a very specific job. Everyone has the ability to make a difference in the world no matter how small and insignificant you may feel at the time. The field of psychology shows that labeling someone often changes that person's belief about themselves as well as their very essence. As her story unfolds, we are able to see numerous examples where the author was searching for a closer relationship with God and was asking people in authority for leadership and guidance, and when asking questions about the plan of salvation, she was often dismissed with the Christian cliché "Either you are or you aren't" regarding salvation. The author takes us on her journey to find grace, forgiveness, and a sense of purpose in a world full of people dishing out labels but never being willing to stop and find out why she was struggling because it is often easy to say "I'll pray for you" and not get our hands dirty with someone's drama. This story offers hope and encouragement to others to not give up despite their trials and tribulations. The author openly shares her personal experiences associated with the damaging effects of labeling and the stigma associated with receiving a mental health diagnosis, divorce, and the loss of a child. And throughout her story, we are able to feel her struggle to find a closer relationship with God. The more we focus on our accomplishments and successes in life, the less room we will have for self-defeating thoughts.

Book excerpt: One of Oprah Daily's 20 Favorite Books of 2021 • Selected as one of Pitchfork's Best Music Books of the Year “One of the best books of its kind in decades.” —The Wall Street Journal An epic achievement and a huge delight, the entire history of popular music over the past fifty years refracted through the big genres that have defined and dominated it: rock, R&B, country, punk, hip-hop, dance music, and pop Kelefa Sanneh, one of the essential voices of our time on music and culture, has made a deep study of how popular music unites and divides us, charting the way genres become communities. In Major Labels, Sanneh distills a career’s worth of knowledge about music and musicians into a brilliant and omnivorous reckoning with popular music—as an art form (actually, a bunch of art forms), as a cultural and economic force, and as a tool that we use to build our identities. He explains the history of slow jams, the genius of Shania Twain, and why rappers are always getting in trouble. Sanneh shows how these genres have been defined by the tension between mainstream and outsider, between authenticity and phoniness, between good and bad, right and wrong. Throughout, race is a powerful touchstone: just as there have always been Black audiences and white audiences, with more or less overlap depending on the moment, there has been Black music and white music, constantly mixing and separating. Sanneh debunks cherished myths, reappraises beloved heroes, and upends familiar ideas of musical greatness, arguing that sometimes, the best popular music isn’t transcendent. Songs express our grudges as well as our hopes, and they are motivated by greed as well as idealism; music is a powerful tool for human connection, but also for human antagonism. This is a book about the music everyone loves, the music everyone hates, and the decades-long argument over which is which. The opposite of a modest proposal, Major Labels pays in full.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the emergence of DIY punk record labels in the early 1980s. Based on interviews with sixty-one labels, including four in Spain and four in Canada, it describes the social background of those who run these labels. Especially interesting are those operated by dropouts from the middle class. Other respected older labels are often run by people with upper middle-class backgrounds. A third group of labels are operated by working-class and lower middle-class punks who take a serious attitude to the work. Using the ideas of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, this book shows how the field of record labels operates. The choice of independent or corporate distribution is a major dilemma. Other tensions are about signing contracts with bands, expecting extensive touring, and using professional promotion. There are often rivalries between big and small labels over bands that have become popular and have to decide whether to move to a more commercial record label. Unlike approaches to punk that consider it as subcultural style, this book breaks new ground by describing punk as a social activity. One of the surprising findings is how many parents actually support their children's participation in the scene. Rather than attempting to define punk as resistance or as commercial culture, this book shows the dilemmas that actual punks struggle with as they attempt to live up to what the scene means for them.

Book excerpt: In a federal prison in Polk County, Texas, Winston Butang sits on death row, awaiting lethal injection for his brutal murder and desecration of a pedophilic priest. Butang, better known in the media as the Stigmata Killer, has no reason to believe that anyone will give the eventual outcome much thought. Someone, however, has thought about it a great deal, and Winston is surprised when one of his guards springs him and whisks him off to a secret bunker in the woods. Stranger still is the fact that his liberator, Vincent Veselli, is none other than the illegitimate son of the murdered priest. Veselli, it turns out, had witnessed the butchery of his father and got his job as a death-row guard as part of a long quest to free the man who did what he could not. Things take a further unexpected twist when a catastrophic firestorm sweeps the area, portending some form of Armageddon that has engulfed the continental US. The two emerge from their secret bunker and, together, make their way north across a surreal landscape of death and devastation, but they still make time for a series of explicit intimate encounters that push and pull the plot line.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the growing field of scholarship on heavy metal music and its subcultures has produced excellent work on the sounds, scenes, and histories of heavy metal around the world, few works have included a study of gender and sexuality. This cutting-edge volume focuses on queer fans, performers, and spaces within the heavy metal sphere, and demonstrates the importance, pervasiveness, and subcultural significance of queerness to the heavy metal ethos. Heavy metal scholarship has until recently focused almost solely on the roles of heterosexual hypermasculinity and hyperfemininity in fans and performers. The dependence on that narrow dichotomy has limited heavy metal scholarship, resulting in poorly critiqued discussions of gender and sexuality that serve only to underpin the popular imagining of heavy metal as violent, homophobic and inherently masculine. This book queers heavy metal studies, bringing discussions of gender and sexuality in heavy metal out of that poorly theorized dichotomy. In this interdisciplinary work, the author connects new and existing scholarship with a strong ethnographic study of heavy metal’s self-identified queer performers and fans in their own words, thus giving them a voice and offering an original and ground-breaking addition to scholarship on popular music, rock, and queer studies.
