Book excerpt: This book is about the family lives of some 10,000 children and adults who live in an all-Negro public housing project in St Louis. The Pruitt-Igoe project is only one of the many environments in which urban Negro Americans lived in the 1960s, but the character of the family life there shares much with the family life of lower-class Negroes as it has been described by other investigators in other cities and at other times, in Harlem, Chicago, New Orleans, or Washington D.C. This book is primarily concerned with private life as it is lived from day to day in a federally built and supported slum. The questions, which are treated here, have to do with the kinds of interpersonal relationships that develop in nuclear families, the socialization processes that operate in families as children grow up in a slum environment, the informal relationships of children and adolescents and adults with each other, and, finally, the world views (the existential framework) arising from the life experiences of the Pruitt-Igoeans and the ways they make use of this framework to order their experiences and make sense out of them. The lives of these persons are examined in terms of life cycles. Each child there is born into a constricted world, the world of lower class, Negro existence, and as he grows he is shaped and directed by that existence through the day-to-day experiences and relationships available to him. The crucial transition from child of a family; to progenitor of a new family begins in adolescence, and for this reason the book pays particular attention to how each new generation of parents expresses the cultural and social structural forces that formed it and continue to constrain its behavior. This book, in short, is about intimate personal life in a particular ghetto setting. It does not analyze the larger institutional, social structural, and ideological forces that provide the social, economic, and political context in which lower-class Negro life is lived. These larger macro sociological forces are treated in another volume based on research in the Pruitt-Igoe community. However, this book does draw on the large body of literature on the structural position of Negroes in American society as background for its analysis of Pruitt-Igoe private life.

Book excerpt: One of Apple Canada’s Best Ebooks of 2024 • CBC Books' Top Pick for Most Anticipated Canadian Fiction for Spring 2024 A breathtaking and sharply funny collection about the everyday trials and impossible expectations that come with being a woman, from the Governor General’s Literary Award-shortlisted author of The Most Precious Substance on Earth. What would have happened if she’d met him at a different time in her life, when she was older, more confident, less lonely, and less afraid? She wonders not whether they would have stayed together, but whether she would have known to stay away. A writer discovers that her ex has published a novel about their breakup. An immunocompromised woman falls in love, only to have her body betray her. After her boyfriend makes an insensitive comment, a college student finds an experimental procedure that promises to turn her brown eyes blue. A Reddit post about a man’s habit of grabbing his girlfriend’s breasts prompts a shocking confession. An unsettling second date leads to the testing of boundaries. And when a woman begins to lose her hair, she embarks on an increasingly nightmarish search for answers. With honesty, tenderness, and a skewering wit, these stories boldly wrestle with rage, longing, illness, and bodily autonomy, and their inescapable impacts on a woman’s relationships with others and with herself.

From the streets of 80s London the Celtic Punks unleashed their hellraising 20-year career and in the process became legends; mythic troubadours whose popularity endures. This Omnibus Enhanced edition of Kiss My Arse has been revamped with an interactive digital timeline which paints the journey of The Pogues with videos and images of live performances, interviews, memorabilia and more. Also included is an integrated Spotify playlist containing the band’s greatest performances. To tell their story author Carol Clerk has interviewed Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy, Jem Finer, Andrew Ranken, James Fearnley, Cait O'Riordan, and a clutch of associates, friends and fans. All paint a picture of a fiercely loyal group of musicians, their arguments and drunken spats, their love affairs, the drugs, the hirings and the firings, the marriages and deaths… but, above all, the music. This is their story, bared for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was not written for the purpose of causing contention between the different races. The book does not imply that slavery was joyful by no means rather it illustrates that all has not been told. In the hearts of all people there is bad but deep down inside we still can find some good. When most people hear the word slavery they become resentful and shameful. Many tend to hold contention in their hearts. Friends, its time for us to get passed our past lives and take a good look at what God has set in front of us. As you sit down and begin reading this tale uou are adjured to please read it slowly. The words chosen in the pages of this book have been prayerfully chosen. The story itself has a deep southern flavor with a tantalizing southern slave language. Whether youre young or old, this books language must be digested one word at a time and its meaning needs to be digested slowly. Many of the lines youll read have taken years to present in written form. Many of the words are extremely expressed for your deepest attention and awakening knowledge. Some of the tales and events really happened to many of the authors relatives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a fictional-historical story about a young boy who is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He lived with his family on a beautiful farm in Currituck, North Carolina. But in 1861, his state became the enemy of the United States, and the Yankee army was coming toward his farm. His father knew he had to protect his son from this war. His decision set his young son on a course that few men would ever travel. The son in this book is based on my great-grandfather, Patrick Henry Morgan. It is a story based on true historical events and is told by Patrick as he lived it. Patrick left his farm in 1862 to begin his schooling at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. His father pulled some strings to get him accepted. His father had lost five of his eleven children to disease, and he did not want his oldest to die in war. Patrick takes us through his time at VMI (1862-1864). Patrick discovers quickly that VMI is not for the faint of heart. He tells many stories about his time at VMI, some bad and some happy, but mostly funny. Patrick takes the reader through his part of the Battle of New Market. After the battle, the glory of the victory quickly faded as the realization that many of his friends had died or were wounded. He ended up in Richmond, digging defensive positions while waiting for the Yankees to attack. The Confederates surrendered at Richmond and his quest to get home. He and four other cadets with five dollars between them traveled 200 miles through Yankee-occupied territory to finally make it home. He helped his community and state by becoming a lawyer, a State Senator of North Carolina, a superintendent of the Lifesaving Service that became the United States Coast Guard in 1915, and much more. Patrick takes the reader along with him as he helps rebuild his state and tells the stories of meeting incredible men and women along with some famous people who changed the world. All based on true events and people with a few assumptions to make a good story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “But will it play in Peoria?” For years, the Midwest has been used as a stand-in for “average America”. The sweeping great plains, the heavy snows of winter, ice fishing and mighty rivers and frozen lakes. Midwesterners have a reputation for being the salt of the earth, friendly and kind and helpful and nice. But is “Midwestern nice” merely a cover for what really goes on in this part of the country? John Wayne Gacy, the bloody Benders, and Jeffrey Dahmer were all Midwesterners—but that doesn’t mean every Midwesterner has bodies buried in their basements…or does it? To celebrate Boucheron, the world’s largest mystery fan convention, coming to Minneapolis in 2022, editor Greg Herren is proud to present a series of tales that will shock and surprise you—and maybe make you think twice about that ice-fishing trip, or before taking a snowmobile out after the sun goes down. Featuring authors from all over the Midwest who know just how dark and lonesome it can get out there in the country at night, these crime stories will entertain you with their trip down the dark side of the “real America”—where the twilight’s last gleaming has an entirely different meaning and feel. Featuring some of the top, award-winning authors in the field today—from Mindy Mejia to Marcie R. Rendon to Michael Wiley, Susanna Calkins and Erica Ruth Neubauer, and Bryon Quertermous, Tessa Wegert, Raquel V. Reyes, and Richie Narvaez—doing some of their finest work to date. Collected and curated by award-winning editor Greg Herren, with stories ranging from light to darkly funny to just out-and-out macabre, Land of 10,000 Thrills is one of the strongest anthologies put together by the Bouchercon conference to date. These stories may not “play in Peoria”…but mystery fans everywhere will enjoy them.

Book excerpt: Aileen Benay Farley under the pen name of F. R. Lee was born July on 28, 1917, in Illinois. At a young age, she and her parents and sister relocated to Vero Beach, Florida. In 1926, Aileens father built the house where Aileen continued to live into her later years. Aileen went to college in Chicago where she studied Dress Designing. During this time, she was discovered, and became a high fashion runway model during the 30s and 40s and into the early 50s in New York City. She was also a model for Elizabeth Arden Cosmetics, and was frequently on magazine covers, such as McCalls. Some of her modeling pictures are also in the Library of Congress. Over the years, Aileen drove back and forth from New York City to Vero Beach in a 1956 Ford she called Henry, since she spent the winters in Vero Beach avoiding the cold winters in the North. Aileen was not married and had no children, and in later years, became very eccentric living in the house built by her father. Aileen owned property in Vero Beach, part of which was an orange grove, and another part of the property had a natural hammock. At her propertys sale, she requested that the hammock was not to be destroyed. While Aileen was in Vero Beach, she would spend long hours tending to her citrus grove and property. This property is an up-scale, gated community located in southwestern Vero Beach and presently called Lost Hammock. In addition, the main street through the community is named, Farleys Court after Aileen. The original manuscript of this book Remedy for Romance, which Aileen typed on a manual typewriter, was included among numerous pictures of her modeling days, and discovered after her death in 2003.
