Download or read book Just Sayin' written by Malorie Blackman and published by Random House. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited autobiography of one of the world's greatest children's writers, and an empowering and inspiring account of a life in books. Malorie Blackman OBE is one of Britain's best loved and most widely-read writers. For over thirty years, her books have helped to shape British culture, and inspired generations of younger readers and writers. The Noughts and Crosses series, started in 2000, sparked a new and necessary conversation about race and identity in the UK, and are already undisputed classics of twenty-first-century children's literature. She is also a writer whose own life has been shaped by books, from her childhood in south London, the daughter of parents who moved to Britain from Barbados as part of the Windrush Generation, and who experienced a childhood that was both wonderful and marred by the everyday racism and bigotry of the era. She was told she could not apply to study her first love, literature, at university, in spite of her academic potential, but found a way to books and to a life in writing against a number of obstacles. This book is an account of that journey, from a childhood surrounded by words, to the 83 rejection letters she received in response to sending out her first project, to the children's laureateship. It explores the books who have made her who she is, and the background to some the most beloved and powerful children's stories of today. It is an illuminating, inspiring and empowering account of the power of words to change lives, and the extraordinary life story of one of the world's greatest writers.

Experienced but naïve, he and his friends feel disconnected from their safe, suburban world of private schools and four-wheel drives. They inhabit a world of their own design - a world of saccharine club anthems, where fun comes by the milligram and fashion is all that counts. Then Calvin meets Anthony, and the two boys form an obsessive bond. But as Calvin deals with the confusion of first love, he discovers pictures of Anthony on a website, and is drawn into a world more adult than he could have imagined. Sushi Central is a subversive black comedy about teen angst pushed to its final, self-destructive extremes. It is about the identities we create for ourselves, the fragile, impulsive nature of youth, and the fear of growing old.

Book Synopsis Small Worlds by : Caleb Azumah Nelson
Download or read book Small Worlds written by Caleb Azumah Nelson and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exhilarating and expansive new novel about fathers and sons, faith and friendship from National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 honoree and Costa First Novel Award winning author Caleb Azumah Nelson One of the most acclaimed and internationally bestselling “unforgettable” (New York Times) debuts of the 2021, Caleb Azumah Nelson’s London-set love story Open Water took the US by storm and introduced the world to a salient and insightful new voice in fiction. Now, with his second novel Small Worlds, the prodigious Azumah Nelson brings another set of enduring characters to brilliant life in his signature rhythmic, melodic prose. Set over the course of three summers, Small Worlds follows Stephen, a first-generation Londoner born to Ghanian immigrant parents, brother to Ray, and best friend to Adeline. On the cusp of big life changes, Stephen feels pressured to follow a certain path—a university degree, a move out of home—but when he decides instead to follow his first love, music, his world and family fractures in ways he didn’t foresee. Now Stephen must find a path and peace for himself: a space he can feel beautiful, a space he can feel free. Moving from London, England to Accra, Ghana and back again, Small Worlds is an exquisite and intimate new novel about the people and places we hold close, from one of the most “elegant, poetic” (CNN) and important voices of a generation.
Download or read book 30 Birds written by Hardy Wieting, Jr and published by C-G-L Press. This book was released on 2019-08-03 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adventure book, travel book, history book, geography book, science book, birding book, laughing-out-loud book -- all wrapped around accounts of pursuing 30 different birds in North America. (This book is connected to a website, 30birds30.com). How different the areas to which we go here are from each other! The first account here takes place in the higher elevations of the Santa Catalina Mountains outside Tucson, Arizona. That is not like the pelagic zone. "Pelagic trips" are sea-going voyages that take birders, and other interested observers, out to the open ocean beyond coastal waters where certain birds, like Leach's Storm-petrel occur. The Everglades is a vast watery expanse, of course, and at times being there can even remind you of floating on a sea, but it is, of course, very different from the pelagic zone. That this Sonoran Desert you find yourself in is totally unlike Delaware or New Hampshire or the suburbs of Washington, DC -- or Pawnee National Grassland -- is a thought that occurs to even the most single-minded birder in pursuit of that next bird. After seeing a lot of birds, the idea finally dawned that it would be worthwhile and interesting to memorialize new ones by typing up an account of the adventure of getting to see them, something which by its very nature involves learning something about the bird itself and the place or places where the observation was accomplished. The more of these accounts I completed, the more I realized how much these latter two learnings add to the adventure. Everything about and inspired by these birds is thought-provoking and enjoyable. The details can be delightfully shocking: parasitism, for example, or blinding mammal infants, or "extra pair activity." The place can be just as absorbing as the bird. To investigation of the differences in ecosystems can be added differences in history, not geological history, though that of course can compel, but social and political history: the CCC, the internment camps, conquistadors, the San Francisco Earthquake, even computer code. The ground you trod upon in pursuit of that winged creature in the bush or on the plain has tales to tell. In one case, that of the Red-faced Warbler, I have gone back to a time before I made the "memorialize" decision, but for all others the accounts are of birds seen after the concept struck. I wish I could go back not just as I did with the warbler, but with all the other predecessors and reconstruct what happened. But that's the problem. If you don't memorialize, details disappear. The original accounts were centered on the pursuit, in a few cases that was all that there was. In preparing all of these for publication, I have added accounts of life history and range where that was absent or have enlarged substantially on it when some was originally included. I have added details to descriptions of places and incorporated research about history. All of which I enjoyed greatly. But a signal joy was rereading these accounts -- it comes close to having these experiences all over again. My hope is that readers of 30 Birds will be able to share in this joy and that it will inspire their own pursuits, all types of pursuits. Some may find accounts here eccentric: Supreme Court cases, ENIAC programmer, Florida dentist in Attu, war against Aguinaldo, English poets, Carl Linné, Marineland, murder, Hotspur, sibilicide, nominalism, Great White Fleet, Monophysitism, Theosophy, but I hope this is a virtue.
