Book excerpt: Just Cate opens in the delivery room with Noelle Alix, a 29-year-old finance attorney in a large New York City firm, whose newborn daughter Cate is unexpectedly born with Down syndrome. On hearing the news, Noelle's childhood friend, Angela Martin, is inspired by her faith to write Noelle a heartfelt note in a baby card. This note and this child spark a transformative 12-year journey of renewed faith and friendship for both women - their second stage of growing up. With humor and heart, the coauthor friends tell a dual tale of the angst and joys of raising a child with a disability, of the power of women friendship, and of Cate's funny poignant early years.
Book Synopsis Just Medicine by : Dayna Bowen Matthew
Download or read book Just Medicine written by Dayna Bowen Matthew and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers an innovative plan to eliminate inequalities in American health care and save the lives they endanger Over 84,000 black and brown lives are needlessly lost each year due to health disparities: the unfair, unjust, and avoidable differences between the quality and quantity of health care provided to Americans who are members of racial and ethnic minorities and care provided to whites. Health disparities have remained stubbornly entrenched in the American health care system—and in Just Medicine Dayna Bowen Matthew finds that they principally arise from unconscious racial and ethnic biases held by physicians, institutional providers, and their patients. Implicit bias is the single most important determinant of health and health care disparities. Because we have missed this fact, the money we spend on training providers to become culturally competent, expanding wellness education programs and community health centers, and even expanding access to health insurance will have only a modest effect on reducing health disparities. We will continue to utterly fail in the effort to eradicate health disparities unless we enact strong, evidence-based legal remedies that accurately address implicit and unintentional forms of discrimination, to replace the weak, tepid, and largely irrelevant legal remedies currently available. Our continued failure to fashion an effective response that purges the effects of implicit bias from American health care, Matthew argues, is unjust and morally untenable. In this book, she unites medical, neuroscience, psychology, and sociology research on implicit bias and health disparities with her own expertise in civil rights and constitutional law. In a time when the health of the entire nation is at risk, it is essential to confront the issues keeping the health care system from providing equal treatment to all.

Book Synopsis It Just Ain't Fair by : Annette Dula
Download or read book It Just Ain't Fair written by Annette Dula and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1994-07-26 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainstream medical ethicists engaged in impartial ethics traditions often overlook the gross disparities in health care that divide our society along color lines. This collection challenges that oversight by bringing ethicists face to face with the plight of a particularly underserved population--African Americans. Health care professionals document disparities in health status and access to care, focusing on issues such as AIDS, homelessness, infant mortality, and distribution of doctors. They discuss distrust and suspicion of the medical community, lack of respect for cultural differences, and self-help approaches. Each chapter is followed by a commentary by a well-known medical ethicist. This anthology enhances traditional medical ethics discourse by presenting the ethical voices and perspectives of African Americans. It is an important guide to developing a culturally aware medical ethics for all ethnic groups ill-served by the nation's health care system.

Book excerpt: If someone else reincarnated, even if they were trash, they would still be human. Why am I reincarnated as a cat? It's fine if I turned into a cat. Other people entering the academy to act cool and have a relationship was fine, but I became a teacher with my life on the line. Furthermore, the class I took was the most useless one in the entire academy. It's not suitable for me to play the pig to eat the tiger. I can only slap my face to make it look fat. Book Synopsis Everything Happens in Chillicothe by : Mike Shannon
Download or read book Everything Happens in Chillicothe written by Mike Shannon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-12-19 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One thing about Max was that he was about as well-adjusted to his disability, if you want to call it that, as anyone could be... He even used his eye once to shut up an obnoxious high school coach. After he'd heard all the complaining he wanted to hear, Max took his eye out of the socket and handed it to the stunned coach, saying, 'You want to umpire this game? Here, be my guest.'" Everything Happens in Chillicothe is an authentic, behind-the-scenes look at the lowest rung of professional baseball, and a biography of Max McLeary, the one-eyed umpire and a most intriguing individual. Author Mike Shannon spent the 2000 Frontier League season attending games with McLeary and gives his account of the season here. The book speaks volumes about umpiring as a profession, relationships (particularly between Max and his estranged son, a minor league player; between Max and his long-suffering wife Patty; and between Max and his umpiring partner Jim Schaly), life in small-town America, and the various people connected with the Chillicothe Paints and other teams in the Frontier League. Many humorous and poignant stories, are told here for the first time, by McLeary, Schaly, and others.

Book Synopsis The Right to Health Care: Ethical Considerations by : Eike-Henner W. Kluge
Download or read book The Right to Health Care: Ethical Considerations written by Eike-Henner W. Kluge and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth ethical analysis of the right to health care by contrasting privatized with socialized approaches. It pays special attention to how a socialized approach can be implemented in the context of limited resources and offers a way of integrating allocation decisions at the policy level with institutional and hands-on decision-making. It also discusses how the right to health care translates into duties on part of the members of society. In an Appendix, it suggests how, in time of need, the TRIPS Agreement allows countries to side-step patent regulations that would otherwise raise the cost of patented healthcare products beyond what a particular society is able to afford. The book is of interest not only to scholars but also to healthcare policy makers, administrators and healthcare professionals, as well as to patients themselves.
