Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *** A NEW YORK TIMES "100 Notable Books of 2020" *** A stunning, complex narrative about the fractured legacy of a decades-old double murder in rural West Virginia—and the writer determined to put the pieces back together. In the early evening of June 25, 1980 in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, two middle-class outsiders named Vicki Durian, 26, and Nancy Santomero, 19, were murdered in an isolated clearing. They were hitchhiking to a festival known as the Rainbow Gathering but never arrived. For thirteen years, no one was prosecuted for the “Rainbow Murders” though deep suspicion was cast on a succession of local residents in the community, depicted as poor, dangerous, and backward. In 1993, a local farmer was convicted, only to be released when a known serial killer and diagnosed schizophrenic named Joseph Paul Franklin claimed responsibility. As time passed, the truth seemed to slip away, and the investigation itself inflicted its own traumas—-turning neighbor against neighbor and confirming the fears of violence outsiders have done to this region for centuries. In The Third Rainbow Girl, Emma Copley Eisenberg uses the Rainbow Murders case as a starting point for a thought-provoking tale of an Appalachian community bound by the false stories that have been told about. Weaving in experiences from her own years spent living in Pocahontas County, she follows the threads of this crime through the complex history of Appalachia, revealing how this mysterious murder has loomed over all those affected for generations, shaping their fears, fates, and desires. Beautifully written and brutally honest, The Third Rainbow Girl presents a searing and wide-ranging portrait of America—divided by gender and class, and haunted by its own violence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At an early age, Linda Smith considered ‘living’ a voyage on a ship sailing life’s ever-changing sea. When she accepted God’s love – certified on Calvary’s Cross, her vision was re-set. She received a new compass with a Majestic needle always pointing to a Peaceful Harbor of Still Water. She prayed for the Lord to guide and direct her life and would always include a ‘post script’ asking Him to send her a good husband. When Linda was ten, her mother died leaving a young girl with responsibilities and decisions not intended for a child. More turbulence than tranquility accompanied her headings through high school. Just after high school, she was living in a dangerous neighborhood and was facing the worse storm of her young life when she met Bennett Wellington. Earlier, her lower-case dad arranged for her to work for a grimy old man. The old man’s equally grimy son had vowed to marry her. She believed God sent Bennett to help her find a safe place to live. He was a schedule-driven person who did not share her conviction and did not want interruptions. After knowing how desperately she needed to leave Logan, WV, he decided to help her. Later, Linda often encountered rough waters that would have capsized dreams of many. Three times, however, the tempest was so overwhelming that her helm was totally in the hands of an Able Mate. Each time Linda’s next trapeze bar was out of sight, sails were unfurled and filled with assurance that the bar would appear. Linda’s ‘post script’ prayer swirled in the wind until answered In GOD’S Time. Book excerpt: This is a story of the struggels and joys of a son of blue collar workers, who went from life in a small town in Minnesota to the mission fields of Japan and Russia. While in college he met and married, Carol, and by the time he graduated with a B.A they had two daughters. After three years of graduate school he became a pastor in Appalachian Mountains in Virginia. However, his great desire was to be a missionary to a foreign country. In 1964 the Church of God, Anderson, Indiana commissioned them as missionaries to Japan. where they served for 31 years. Being just short of retirement, the Church of God Mission Board requested that they go to Russia for a year. Upon retiring they settled in Vancouver, Washington, close to family, and he became the pastor to seniors for the Vancouver First Church of God, serving in this capacity for ten years. His great joy in retirement is teaching his great-grandchildren to ski and play tennis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality: A Contemporary Approach to Race, Class, and Gender offers a comprehensive introduction to the topics animating current sociological research focused on inequality. Contemporary, engaging, and research-oriented, it is the ideal text to help undergraduate students master the basic concepts in inequality research and gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which race, class, and gender interact with systems of social stratification. Following an introduction to theories and research methods used in the field, the authors apply these concepts to areas that define inequality research, including social mobility, education, gender, race, and culture. The authors include up-to-date quantitative evidence throughout. The text concludes by examining policies that have facilitated inequality and reviewing the social movements that in turn seek to reshape those structures. Though primarily focused on the United States, it includes a chapter on stratification across the globe and draws on cross-national comparisons throughout.
