Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving account of Madagascar told by a researcher who has spent over fifty years investigating the mysteries of this remarkable island. Madagascar is a place of change. A biodiversity hotspot and the fourth largest island on the planet, it has been home to a spectacular parade of animals, from giant flightless birds and giant tortoises on the ground to agile lemurs leaping through the treetops. Some species live on; many have vanished in the distant or recent past. Over vast stretches of time, Madagascar’s forests have expanded and contracted in response to shifting climates, and the hand of people is clear in changes during the last thousand years or so. Today, Madagascar is a microcosm of global trends. What happens there in the decades ahead can, perhaps, suggest ways to help turn the tide on the environmental crisis now sweeping the world. The Sloth Lemur’s Song is a far-reaching account of Madagascar’s past and present, led by an expert guide who has immersed herself in research and conservation activities with village communities on the island for nearly fifty years. Alison Richard accompanies the reader on a journey through space and time—from Madagascar’s ancient origins as a landlocked region of Gondwana and its emergence as an island to the modern-day developments that make the survival of its array of plants and animals increasingly uncertain. Weaving together scientific evidence with Richard’s own experiences and exploring the power of stories to shape our understanding of events, this book captures the magic as well as the tensions that swirl around this island nation.

Book excerpt: Every once in a while, certainly not often, a god or goddess descends to earth and walks among us, a young person whose looks are so striking that they seem of another world, and who, for a brief moment, have no idea of the power of their looks over others. Jack is just such a god, strayed from Olympus, a 24-year-old who is hired as a Personal Trainer at a suburban gym. Often such gods have other powers beyond their looks. Jack's are an effortless strength and fitness and energy. If the best Personal Trainers at the gym struggle to execute 10 perfect pull ups, Jack performs 30 flawless ones and still looks like he could keep going, addressing every routine in the gym with a grace and style that keeps all eyes on him. Every member of the gym wants to hire Jack as their Personal Trainer. Two of his obsessed clients want to possess this god-like creature. Anne is ready to leave the fantasy world her hedge fund manager husband has created for her and their two teenage children, leave all to run away with her Personal Trainer. And Latham, a prominent tax attorney, thinks nothing of blowing off meetings with important clients to sit rink side with Jack at hockey games. Under Jack's spell, their lives revolve around him. And Jack's life, too, is turned upside down as he enters a strange new world of mansions and country clubs of summer homes and shopping sprees. JACK'D takes the reader into the curious world of today's gyms: where the regulars come daily to lift and press and pump and push, pulling and crunching and planking and squatting, lunging and curling and running and climbing, pedaling and jumping, all to look more like the genetically endowed Personal Trainers; where the true believers flock to their Neverland to keep from growing old, there to man the Maginot line against Eternity.

Book excerpt: Carlos Acosta grew up in a shantytown in Fidel Castro's politically isolated Cuba. Like many boys, he'd skip school to play football or breakdance with his friends. His father's solution to his unruly behaviour was to send him to ballet school where he would be disciplined, trained and fed - for free. It was many years before Carlos came to accept a pursuit he saw as 'sissy'. Today he is one of the world's most stunning classical ballet dancers, admired internationally for his magnetic presence on stage. This is his story.

Harmony is desperate to fill in the gaps in Storm's story, while the responsibility Mel feels for the woman she rescued begins to skew the course of her own settled life. Their efforts to solve the mystery clash with the efforts of rookie constable Mason, assigned to the case and determined to help this damsel he feels to be very much in distress. Will any of them be able to find out who Storm really is? And what if the distress belongs to everyone but her? Everything You Do Is Wrong is a compelling exploration of how this enigma sets a family's good and bad intentions crashing into each other, with unforgettable consequences.

Book excerpt: Margot Fonteyn's closest friends don't appear in Daneman's detailed biography. Lita Legarda (a doctor) gets a one line mention. Angie Novello (Margot's Washington Hostess), Theodora Christon (Margot's personal secretary) and Ken Ludden aren't mentioned at all. These were the people she trusted most, who kept her confidences and never spoke to the press. Everyone knew Margot differently. BQ, her mother, knew one Margot. Tito, her husband, knew another. Ludden, her circle's youngest by a large margin, knew yet another side of Margot: hence the title 'My Margot'. Ken shares that Margot--who taught him so much about ballet and life, and with whom he worked to plan ballet's future. Beyond Margot we learn about Ken's delightful relationship with BQ, a close friendship between a teenager and a woman of eighty. Ken also writes with unflinching honesty of the hostile relationship he had with Rudolf Nureyev, which developed over time into a grudging mutual respect and a shared grief when Margot died.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of dance’s pathologization may startle readers who find in dance performance grace, discipline, geometry, poetry, and the body’s transcendence of itself. Exploring dance’s historical links to the medical and scientific connotations of a “pathology,” this book asks what has subtended the idealization of dance in the West. It investigates the nineteenth-century response, in the intersections of dance, literature, and medicine, to the complex and long-standing connections between illness, madness, poetry, and performance. In the nineteenth century, medicine becomes a major cultural index to measure the body’s meanings. As a particularly performative form of madness, nineteenth-century hysteria preserved the traditional connection to dance in medical descriptions of “choreas.” In its withholding of speech and its use of body code, dance, like hysteria, functions as a form of symptomatic expression. Yet by working like a symptom, dance performance can also be read as a commentary on symptomatology and as a condition of possibility for such alternative approaches to mental illness as psychoanalysis. By redeeming as art what is “lost” in hysteria, dance expresses non-hysterically what only hysteria had been able to express: the somatic translation of idea, the physicalization of meaning. Medicine’s discovery of “idea” manifesting itself in the body in mental illness strikingly parallels a literary fascination with the ability of nineteenth-century dance to manifest “idea,” suggesting that the evolution of medical thinking about mind-body relations as they malfunction in madness, as well as changes in the cultural reception of danced representations of these relations, might be paradigmatic shifts caused by the same cultural factors: concern about the body as a site of meaning and about vision as a theater of knowledge.
