To reduce investigation of this insight to manageable proportions, researchers have traditionally concentrated on the “deepest” dialects. But it is increasingly apparent that, although most people still speak with a distinct regional coloring, the new mobility of speakers in recently industrialized and postindustrial societies and the efflorescence of communication technologies cannot be ignored. This has given rise to a reconsideration of the relationship between geographical place and cultural space, and the fundamental link between language and a spatially bounded territory. Language and Space: An International Handbook of Linguistic Variation seeks to take full account of these developments in a comprehensive, theoretically rich way. The introductory volume examines the concept of space and linguistic approaches to it, the structure and dynamics of language spaces, and relevant research methods. Er studierte an der Universität Rostock Germanistik und Slawistik sowie Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft. Von 1964 an war er im Rahmen der Berliner Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin vier Jahrzehnte in Forschung und Lehre tätig. Er war Mitarbeiter am „Deutschen Wörterbuch“ Brüder Grimm und am „Wörterbuch der deutschen Gegenwartssprache“. Jürgen Scharnhorst ist Gründungsmitglied des Vereins zur Förderung sprachwissenschaftlicher Studien e.V und war von 2002 bis 2006 dessen Vorsitzender. Sein Interesse gilt primär der Weiterführung und Pflege der Ideen, die bereits zu Anfang des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts von den Wissenschaftlern der Prager Schule ins Leben gerufen wurden. Im Vordergrund steht der Auftrag die Sprachkultur länderübergreifend zu fördern und immer wieder in den Blickpunkt von Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit zu rücken. Begleitend zu den Reformen der 1990er Jahre beschäftigt sich Jürgen Scharnhorst zudem mit der deutschen Orthographie, deren Kodifizierung und der sinnvollen Nutzung von Wörterbüchern. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit liegt auf den Verdiensten der vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnte und Scharnhorsts Beitrag zur Sprachkultur. Über die historische Entwicklung hinaus, wird die Bedeutung der Sprachkultur für die Wissenschaft vorgestellt, ihre Zielsetzungen und Probleme formuliert und ein exemplarischer Ausblick über ihre gegenwärtige Notwendigkeit in der Sprachpolitik statuiert.
