Such poetry may look like junk, That’s well below most standards sunk, That earthy, tasteless stuff contains, But, poetry –like form retains. Has no fixed themes, reason, or rhyme, Simply whatever came to mind. Still, Junk Poetry, to be sure, Contains merit – as does manure. Junk poems in their clever way, Convey ideas we wish to say, That some may even pause to read, That normally, they’d no way heed. But Junk Poetry’s fluffy stuff, You read it once and that’s enough!

Book excerpt: An NPR Best Book of the Year From 2018 Whiting Award winner Tommy Pico, Junk is a book-length break-up poem that explores the experience of loss and erasure, both personal and cultural. The third book in Tommy Pico’s Teebs trilogy, Junk is a breakup poem in couplets: ice floe and hot lava, a tribute to Janet Jackson and nacho cheese. In the static that follows the loss of a job or an apartment or a boyfriend, what can you grab onto for orientation? The narrator wonders what happens to the sense of self when the illusion of security has been stripped away. And for an indigenous person, how do these lost markers of identity echo larger cultural losses and erasures in a changing political landscape? In part taking its cue from A.R. Ammons’s Garbage, Teebs names this liminal space “Junk,” in the sense that a junk shop is full of old things waiting for their next use; different items that collectively become indistinct. But can there be a comfort outside the anxiety of utility? An appreciation of “being” for the sake of being? And will there be Chili Cheese Fritos?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wry and dark debut of sharply compressed lyrics by a precocious new voice in poetry. These powerful poems are like wrecked pastorals whose narrator seeks temporary pleasure in wit, form, rhyme, or the borrowed weekend house. Inching toward consolation in the face of sudden loss, the poet examines the reconfigured world. The elegies are like conversations overheard or recounted dreams: full of portent and mystery.

Book excerpt: In Junk Drawer, Corey D. Cook brings the poet's eye and sensibilities to artifacts and occasions both common and uncommon, such as a fishing trip, a mother's grief, the Donald Hall estate sale, a splitting wedge and the drawer filled with the detritus of accumulated living: "His and hers phone chargers / in an inexplicable knot, / bound together / like a solemn vow." Through the perceptive lens of Cook's poetry, his gift for metaphor, we are able to say with new and deeper understanding: I know where we are, I have been here before. -Robert Demaree, author of Other Ladders and After Labor Day (Beech River Books) Corey D. Cook's poetry is accessible, and that is not a bad thing. Indeed, we have privileged access to his economy of words-that like a quick cut from a stiletto, makes us stop short and catch our collective breath. His poems incorporate it all, from a dead cow, manure on Donald Hall's estate in New Hampshire, to an image of a gone-to-seed snowman as an omen of depression. The banal is profound in Cook's work-he is a high holy poet of the extraordinary in the ordinary. -Doug Holder, founder of Ibbetson Street Press and Creative Writing faculty at Endicott College As I read Corey D. Cook's commanding new poetry collection, Junk Drawer, I am reminded of that particular pain when accidentally stepping on one of my children's Legos in the middle of the night; the hopping, followed by the cussing. Junk Drawer, similarly, delves into the unrelenting push and pull of family life, counseling sessions and those things left unsaid, of pots boiling over, and small children sneaking into their parents' bed like in the poem, "Splitting Wedge"-He woke early and slipped out / of bed for Sesame Street / and the letter of the day / leaving behind the "V" our bodies made / our heels barely touching. And in the poem, "Junk Drawer (IV)," we discover-O's report card / from swim lessons / the one skill unchecked: / survival float. I strongly recommend Cook's Junk Drawer, a glorious read. -Carolynn Kingyens, author of Before the Big Bang Makes a Sound (Kelsay Books)

That crass, crude stuff, contains, Yet poetry-like in form remains. No fixed themes, reason, rhyme, Just whatever came to mind. But junk poetry, to be sure, Has merit, as does manure. Yet, poems in their clever way, Convey ideas we wish to say, That some may even pause to read, That normally, they'd no way heed. But junk poetry is fluffy stuff, You read it once and that's enough! About the Author: Rolland "Moose" Amos, the author, was born in 1931 and grew up in Northeastern Ohio. He attended Ohio State U., Mexico City College (BA - Int. Relations), Boston U. (MA - Int. Relations), U. of MD (BA - German) and Middlebury (VT) College (MA - Russian). Amos served in the army and air force for 22 years, then worked at the National Security Agency until he retired in 1994. While growing up in Ohio, they called him "Mickey" (like the mouse with ears!) and in the military they called Amos "Moose" (a variation of "A-Moose"). When he wrote his first poem ("Ditty to AHS" in JUNK POETRY) in 2013, he discovered that writing poems was an interesting, challenging and entertaining vehicle for expressing thoughts and ideas and for just killing time constructively. This is his second volume of poetry. He now resides in Maryland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derek Jarman was the most important independent filmmaker in England during the 1980s. Using emblems and symbols in associative contexts, rather than conventional, cause-and-effect narrative, he created films noteworthy for their lyricism and poetic feeling and for their exploration of the gay experience. His style of filmmaking also links Jarman with other prominent directors of lyric film, including Pier Paolo Pasolini, Andrei Tarkovsky, Jean Cocteau, and Jean Genet. This pathfinding book places Derek Jarman in the tradition of lyric film and offers incisive readings of all eleven of his feature-length films, from Sebastiane to Blue. Steven Dillon looks at Jarman and other directors working in a similar vein to establish how lyric films are composed through the use of visual imagery and actual poetry. He then traces Jarman's use of imagery (notably mirrors and the sea) in his films and discusses in detail the relationship between cinematic representations and sexual identity. This insightful reading of Jarman's work helps us better understand how films such as The Last of England and The Garden can be said to cohere and mean without being reduced to clear messages. Above all, Dillon's book reveals how truly beautiful and brilliant Jarman's movies are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "So welcome, readers, to a plurality of poets, a cornucopia of tropes, and a range of interests." -- From Billy Collins's introduction The Best American Poetry series offers a distinguished poet's selection of poems published in the course of a year. The guest editor for 2006 is Billy Collins, one of our most beloved poets, who has chosen poems of wit, humor, imagination, and surprise, in an array of styles and forms. The result is a celebration of the pleasures of poetry -- from Laura Cronk's marvelous "Sestina for the Newly Married" to the elegant limericks of R. S. Gwynn and from Reb Livingston on butter to Mark Halliday's "Refusal to Notice Beautiful Women." In his charming and candid introduction Collins explains how he chose seventy-five poems from among the thousands he considered. With insightful comments from the poets illuminating their work, and series editor David Lehman's thought-provoking foreword, The Best American Poetry 2006 is a brilliant addition to a series that links the most noteworthy verse and prose poems of our time to a readership as discerning as it is devoted to the art of poetry.
