Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior High School Mathematics: Second Book The book closes with extended groups of problems which apply the mathematical principles previously taught to conditions under which such problems are usually met. The last few sets of problems are involved in projects planned to follow as closely as possible a series of activities requiring much computation for a genuine purpose. These projects may suggest to the teacher similar projects having particular local interest for the pupils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior High School Mathematics, Vol. 3 As to sequence, algebra has the first place in this book for the reason that the student is already familiar with the subject and needs to use it in the trigonometry. Trigonometry is next studied for the reason that it requires algebra but in its first stages, which are here presented, makes no use of demonstrative geometry, depending rather upon the intuitive geometry already studied. Demonstrative geometry comes last for the reason that it requires more maturity of judgment than the kind of algebra and trigonometry given in this book. It is feasible, however, to carry the algebra and geometry parallel if desired, or to reverse the order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Algebra furnishes the material for the first half of the book, the second half being devoted to those topics of business arith metic which are appropriate to the student's maturity. The work in Book I has already shown the use of the formula in algebra and has furnished a large amount of material to which the formula can now properly be still further related. It is therefore natural to place algebra in the first half year and to make free use of it in the arithmetic that follows, unless the courses are carried along parallel to each other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior High School Mathematics: Book III: General Mathematics for the Ninth Year This series of mathematical textbooks marks a new type of mathematics as to aims, purposes, and material. Unbiased by tradition, the author seeks to give the mathematics necessary in order to interpret the quantitative phases of modern life, met by the average intelligent person outside of his specialized vocation. That is, all topics and processes have been selected for the primary purpose of developing the power to see and the habit of seeing those quantitative relationships and spatial magnitudes necessary to a better understanding and appreciation of present-day life. To do this, the series makes use of concepts and processes usually classed as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; but it uses only such a part of these subjects as is needed to interpret and appreciate the references to them found in general reading or met in present-day social activities. It is the modern needs of the student, then, that are kept constantly in mind in the selection of topics, and not the development of the subject along traditional lines. The last year of the junior high school or the first of the high school on the 8 - 4 plan. It presupposes a knowledge of the introduction to algebra given through the mensuration of Book Two. With a little supplementation, however, it may be taught independently of Book Two. She is very much indebted to Miss Amy F. Preston of Roosevelt School, Columbus, for her continued assistance and experimentation. She hereby acknowledges her indebtedness also to Miss Alva Edwards of Mound Street Intermediate School and to Mr. J. E. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Junior Mathematics, Vol. 1 Until recently upper elementary and high school work in mathematics was planned for the pupil who was expected to continue it in the university. Although logical, its arrangement was neither psychological nor pedagogical. Some progress, however, has been made recently in adapting the study to the needs and abilities of pupils. In the junior high or intermediate school, work in mathematics in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades should be complete in itself and at the same tirne preparatory to senior high school work. No effort should be made to finish arithmetic in the eighth grade and algebra in the ninth, while denying the child the interest and beauty that lie in geometry and trigonometry until his taste for mathematics has been destroyed. Nor will alternate bits of formal algebra, geometry, and trigonometry solve the problem. The result is a mastery of none and a confusion in all. Experience has proved that the necessary elements of arithmetic can be taught and certain definite skill developed in the first six grades. In the seventh grade business applications of arithmetic with the Simplest elements of bookkeeping should be given. In the eighth grade mensuration should be taught experimentally or through observational geometry, and, through that, in a natural and meaningful way. (this material will be presented in a book, The Psychology and Teach ing of junior High School Mathematics, some time during the school year 1919 It has been clearly demonstrated that special products and factoring can be satisfactorily taught and habituated in 7 class periods, -these contrasted with the 30 class periods of the common practice of the day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Junior Mathematics, Vol. 2 The nucleus of this book grew out of the author's experience as an instructor in mathematics in a large city high school, in teaching the first book of plane geometry without a text. Four years ago an outline of it was given by the author to the teachers under her supervision because no suitable text in experi mental geometry could be found. By way of further suggestion, one or two topics were expanded in more detail and discussed with the teachers. This book is the result of their urgent request for more. Since then, over a score of teachers have used the outline, and their unanimous opinion is that the pupils take an increased delight in mathematics of this kind. The author was in a position to observe the effects of teach ing it in various types of schools and found it most gratifying. It covers the work as generally taught in a majority of the schools in this country. Most of our elementary schools extend through eight school years, and the topics studied are generally rather uniform. For systems in which the junior high school begins in the seventh grade the Junior High School Mathematics, Books I, II, and III, published in this series, will be found well arranged, but for the more common type of school the work of Grades VII and VIII will for a long time be of the nature herein set forth. For the convenience of teachers the book has been divided into four chapters, each chapter containing sufficient work for a half year. Teachers may omit as many exercises as necessary to allow for carrying out this plan. Indeed, one of the greatest failures on the part of teachers using any textbook is due to the fact that they feel that all exercises must be solved. A. d104book should be the servant of the teacher, not the master, and under each topic the teacher should choose only such exercises and as many of them as are necessary to secure good work on the part of the pupils. This series exemplifies the practical application of the modern philosophy and objectives of the junior high school movement. The point of view is consistently that of social mathematics, rather than that of purely computational arithmetic. Such socialization automatically forces a unification of subject matter from all branches of mathematics that are related to a given social situation. The point of View may also be described as that of consumer mathematics.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junior High School Mathematics Third Course This book has been planned to meet the needs of the first year mathematics in the ordinary high school, as well as to serve as a Third Course in Junior High School Mathematics. Comparison with the traditional freshman course in ordinary high schools, will show that certain geometric matter of admitted value has been inserted, and some relatively useless topics have been omitted from the algebraic portions. This renders the book particularly suitable for use as a freshman text in mathematics in ordinary high schools, and it does not detract from its value as a Third Course in Junior High School Mathematics. The review of arithmetic and of elementary geometric and algebraic notions, with which the book begins, is very desirable for any course of this type; and it makes the work usable either with or without the preceding books in the series. The authors have been guided in their work by the following principles: 1. That there should be a high degree of continuity in the subject matter of mathematics and in the methods of presenting it during the three years of the Junior High School.
