Brutally treated, under paid and subjected to greed of the ship owners and misguided government policies that conspired to keep the seaman in a condition of poverty and near slavery. Change only came about with the advent of the of the Maritime Unions and World War II. But no sooner had the war ended conditions on American Merchant vessels began to revert the old ways. The ship owners, with Government acquiescence, began to register their fleets under foreign flags in an attempt to break the power of the maritime unions. This activity give rise to the continual, and bloody, labor disputes of the 60’s and 70’s. Those prolonged lockouts and strikes were finally responsible for the virtual demise of the Merchant Marine. So ended the dream for we who love the sea and had made it our lives.

Book excerpt: "For many decades and for many reasons, people who are homeless have chosen to live in camps or other makeshift settings, even when shelters are available. Is this an act of resistance? Of self-preservation? Or are they simply too addicted, too mentally ill, or too criminal to adapt to the rules and regulations of shelter life? To address these questions, Michele Wakin explores the evolution of unsheltered homelessness through an evocative portrait of a jungle encampment that has endured since the Great Depression in one of the most opulent cities on California's south coast"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Figures is a literary history with a difference. It examines British writing about the East – centred on India but radiating as far as Egypt and the Pacific – in the colonial and postcolonial period. It takes as its subject "the East" that was real to the British imagination, largely the creation of writers who described and told stories about it, descriptions and stories coloured by the experience of empire and its aftermath. It is bold in its scope, with a centre of gravity in the work of writers like Stevenson, Kipling, Conrad, and Orwell, but also covering less well-known literary authors, and including Anglo-Indian romance writing, the reports and memoirs of administrators, and travel writing from Auden and Isherwood in China to Redmond O'Hanlon in Borneo. Eastern Figures produces a history of this writing by looking at a series of "figures" or tropes of representation through which successive writers sought to represent the East and the British experience of it – tropes such as exploring the hinterland, going native, and the figure of rule itself. Eastern Figures is accessible to anyone interested in the literary and cultural history of empire and its aftermath. It will be of especial interest to students and scholars of colonial and postcolonial writing, as it raises issues of identity and representation, power and knowledge, and centrally the question of how to represent other people. It has original ideas and approaches to offer specialists in literary history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, cultural historians, and researchers in colonial discourse analysis, postcolonial studies, and Asian area studies and history. It is also aimed at students in courses in literature and empire, culture and imperialism, and cross-cultural studies.

Book excerpt: When Eric Toensmeier and Jonathan Bates moved into a duplex in a run-down part of Holyoke, Massachusetts, the tenth-of-an-acre lot was barren ground and bad soil, peppered with broken pieces of concrete, asphalt, and brick. The two friends got to work designing what would become not just another urban farm, but a "permaculture paradise" replete with perennial broccoli, paw paws, bananas, and moringa—all told, more than two hundred low-maintenance edible plants in an innovative food forest on a small city lot. The garden—intended to function like a natural ecosystem with the plants themselves providing most of the garden's needs for fertility, pest control, and weed suppression—also features an edible water garden, a year-round unheated greenhouse, tropical crops, urban poultry, and even silkworms. In telling the story of Paradise Lot, Toensmeier explains the principles and practices of permaculture, the choice of exotic and unusual food plants, the techniques of design and cultivation, and, of course, the adventures, mistakes, and do-overs in the process. Packed full of detailed, useful information about designing a highly productive permaculture garden, Paradise Lot is also a funny and charming story of two single guys, both plant nerds, with a wild plan: to realize the garden of their dreams and meet women to share it with. Amazingly, on both counts, they succeed.

When the Panther began his own solo series, Don McGregor strove to meet Lee and Kirby's high standard with "Panther's Rage." It was an epic adventure so huge it ranged across the savannah, into the deepest jungles and up snow-topped mountains. Over its course, McGregor would explore and expand the life and culture of Wakanda and their African kingdom in compelling detail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You have seen democratic elections among humans. My story brings democracy among animals living in a South African jungle named the Jungle Paradise. It all started when two animal friends, Jack the Jackal and Freddie the Fox went to a nearby city to buy gifts for their friends during the Christmas time. There they saw a lady addressing a huge gathering. Curious to know what was happening the two friends asked an old man who was sitting on a bench nearby. We will call him the Wise Man who told the two friends that an election for mayor of the city was a few days away and the lady was a candidate for mayor. Surprised at the idea of elections to choose the mayor of the city, the two friends persuaded the Wise Man to come to the Jungle Paradise and explain how to elect a new leader - as the animals living in the Jungle Paradise were very unhappy with the Lion King. A large number of animals gathered to discuss ways to hold an election to choose a new leader. The Wise Man explained the qualities of democracy and democratic elections. Several animals, including the Hippo, the Rhino, and the Elephant expressed their desire to be candidates for the leadership. The first democratic elections took place in this South African jungle under the supervision of the Wise Man and a new leader was elected - that changed the Jungle Paradise forever. Guess who was elected the new king of the jungle!

Book excerpt: David Whitley's compelling study complicates our understanding of the classic Disney canon by focusing on the way images of the natural world are mediated within popular art for children. He examines a range of Disney's feature animations, from Snow White to Finding Nemo, to show that, even as the films communicate the central ideologies of their times, they also express the ambiguities and tensions that underlie these dominant values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second edition of The Idea of Nature in Disney Animation, David Whitley updates his 2008 book to reflect recent developments in Disney and Disney-Pixar animation such as the apocalyptic tale of earth's failed ecosystem, WALL-E. As Whitley has shown, and Disney's newest films continue to demonstrate, the messages animated films convey about the natural world are of crucial importance to their child viewers. Beginning with Snow White, Whitley examines a wide range of Disney's feature animations, in which images of wild nature are central to the narrative. He challenges the notion that the sentimentality of the Disney aesthetic, an oft-criticized aspect of such films as Bambi, The Jungle Book, Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, and Finding Nemo, necessarily prevents audiences from developing a critical awareness of contested environmental issues. On the contrary, even as the films communicate the central ideologies of the times in which they were produced, they also express the ambiguities and tensions that underlie these dominant values. In distinguishing among the effects produced by each film and revealing the diverse ways in which images of nature are mediated, Whitley urges us towards a more complex interpretation of the classic Disney canon and makes an important contribution to our understanding of the role popular art plays in shaping the emotions and ideas that are central to contemporary experience.

The first several essays focus on crime fiction set in Barcelona and look at, among other topics, the symbiotic relationship between the city and the detective in Francisco Gonzalez Ledesma's long-running Inspector Mendez series, Manuel Vazquez Montalban's treatments of the 1992 Summer Olympic Games, and place and identity in Alicia Gimenez-Bartlett's Petra Delicado series. Other essays examine regional and cultural illiteracy in Jorge Martinez Reverte's Galvez series and Spain's changing urban centers as represented in Andreu Martin's El blues de la semana mas negra.

It tells a story based on the "truth is stranger than fiction" ancient artifacts found in South America, Southern Iraq and around the world, and their astonishing connection to each other. Anirika and Nakima, the principle couple governing a small tribe of Asheninga speaking people in the Peruvian jungle, discover that their culture--language, rituals and ancient cherished artifacts preserve the data needed by the descendant of a long absent Great Lord of the Ancient pre-Sumerian people called the Annunaki clan who claim to have genetically engineered the human race. Now they are about to return and need the information Anirika and Nakima have unwittingly preserved for them. Will they give that information up willingly? Or, will they use their new-found knowledge to raise a challenge to the absentee Lords?
