Book excerpt: Excerpt from Julian the Apostate and the Duke of Mercia: Historical Dramas 'rity of its brief and pregnant form fits it in a peculiar sense for the loftier themes of song. The truthfulness of his poetry will be best understood by those who knew its author best. None of his poems are more marked by it than the Sonnets which record, with a manly pathos, his devotion to those linked to him by domestic bonds, or by early association; - some early te moved, and one his survivor for nearly ten years. It was as an expression of our spiritual and intel lectual being that he chie y reverenced poetry; and an unusual proportion of his works is an utterance of the writer's convictions and sym pathics, religious, moral, and political. His Historical Sonnets were inspired by a deeply rooted chivalrous sentiment, by his respect for monarchical and ecclesiastical institutions, and by his reverence for the past but they illustrate not less forcibly the compatibility of the most zealous loyalty with a genuine love of liberty, and breathe the spirit of an age when no one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of the Emperor Julian, Vol. 3 of 3 In 351 Constantius, who had once visited the brothers at Macellum, released them, raised Gallus to the rank of Caesar and gave him his sister Constantia in marriage. Constantius had married as his first wife Galla, the sister of Gallus; she had lately died. Gallus was sent to Antioch to govern the provinces of the East. There he and Constantia, whose cruel and suspicious temper matched his own, embarked on a four years' reign of terror which is described by Ammianus.1 Constantius meanwhile, at Arles, where he spent the winter of 353, and later at Milan, was just as suspicious and ruthless, but in Gallus Caesar tyrannical conduct seemed to his cousin the prelude to usurpation. He was there fore recalled to Milan in 354. Constantia died of a fever on the journey, and Gallus, escorted by the Emperor's agents as a virtual prisoner, was taken by way of Constantinople to Pola (where in 326 Crispus, the son of Constantine, had been put to death by his father), and was there beheaded, towards the end of 354. Julian later avenged himself on those whom he believed to have been accessory to the death of his brother.
