This book was released on 2007 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers an examination of the work of popular Spanish singer-songwriters, Victor Manuel, Joaquin Sabina and Ana Belen, and the connection between their works and the broader context of the Spanish democratic transition (1960-1982). This work should appeal to scholars interested in political science, history, cultural studies and Hispanic studies. singer-songwriters Victor Manuel and Joaquin Sabina and in those by well-known female political singer Ana Belen between the years 1968 and 1982. It examines the connections that existed between their works and the broader Spanish context of the Transition (1960-1982) to democracy. It also explores the representations of Spanish national identity - with special reference to gender differences - that appeared in their texts between 1968 and 1982. It compares the relationship that existed between representations of the nation and national identity in their musical work and Francoist notions of Spain and Spanishness as constructed in different hegemonic discourses. Finally, this book examines some of the most relevant roles that Spanish cancion de autor/a, cantautores and cantantes politicos fulfilled at the time of the Transition, especially among different anti-Francoist collectives.

Book Synopsis The Argentine Folklore Movement by : Oscar Chamosa
Download or read book The Argentine Folklore Movement written by Oscar Chamosa and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscar Chamosa brings forth the compelling story of an important but often overlooked component of the formation of popular nationalism in Latin America: the development of the Argentine folklore movement in the first part of the twentieth century. This movement involved academicians studying the culture of small farmers and herders of mixed indigenous and Spanish descent in the distant valleys of the Argentine northwest, as well as artists and musicians who took on the role of reinterpreting these local cultures for urban audiences of mostly European descent. Oscar Chamosa combines intellectual history with ethnographic and sociocultural analysis to reconstruct the process by which mestizo culture—in Argentina called criollo culture—came to occupy the center of national folklore in a country that portrayed itself as the only white nation in South America. The author finds that the conservative plantation owners—the “sugar elites”—who exploited the criollo peasants sponsored the folklore movement that romanticized them as the archetypes of nationhood. Ironically, many of the composers and folk singers who participated in the landowner-sponsored movement adhered to revolutionary and reformist ideologies and denounced the exploitation to which those criollo peasants were subjected. Chamosa argues that, rather than debilitating the movement, these opposing and contradictory ideologies permitted its triumph and explain, in part, the enduring romanticizing of rural life and criollo culture, essential components of Argentine nationalism. The book not only reveals the political motivations of culture in Argentina and Latin America but also has implications for understanding the articulation of local culture with national politics and entertainment markets that characterizes contemporary cultural processes worldwide today.

Book Synopsis Evidentiality and Epistemological Stance by : Ilana Mushin
Download or read book Evidentiality and Epistemological Stance written by Ilana Mushin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the discourse pragmatics of reportive evidentiality in Macedonian, Japanese and English through an empirical study of evidential strategies in narrative retelling. The patterns of evidential use (and non-use) found in these languages are attributed to contextual, cultural and grammatical factors that motivate the adoption of an 'epistemological stance' - a concept that owes much to recent trends in Cognitive Linguistics. The patterns of evidential strategies found in the three languages provide a fine illustration of the balancing act between speakers' expressions of their own subjectivity, their motivations to tell a coherent and exciting story, and their motivations to be faithful retellers of someone elses' story. These pressures are further complicated by the grammatical and pragmatic conventions that are particular to each language. Evidentiality and Epistemological Stance: narrative retelling will appeal to those interested in evidentiality, grammar and pragmatics, cross-linguistics discourse analysis, linguistic subjectivity and narrative.
