Book excerpt: This book provides a concise, accurate introduction to the theology of Juan Luis Segundo. It is comprehensive in its brevity. After presenting Segundo in terms of the historical development of his work, the author explains the main influences on his thought, the principal categories and distinctions that distinguish his language, and the elements of method that structures the genesis of his theology. She draws from the whole corpus of his writing and by comparative analysis is able to shed light on many of Segundo's basic distinctions that befuddle many. Clarifies the fundamental categories that recur again and again in Segundo's thinking. Beyond re-presenting Segundo's theology, Lowe Ching provides a coherent and plausible interpretation of it. In each successive chapter she builds the argument that the theme of efficacious love holds the various dimensions of Segundo's theory together. Its commanding influence is reflected in his appropriation of his sources and in the structure of his method. Not only of interest for students of liberation theology and readers of Juan Luis Segundo but all those interested in the meaning of Christianity itself.

Book excerpt: This concentrated, critical study of Juan Luis Segundo reveals some of the deepest impulses of liberation theology itself. The book proves the implications of Segundo's dialogue with the social sciences and in particular, demonstrates the powerful impact of Karl Marx's social philosophy on Segundo's thought. The book explores the difficult yet fascinating contradictions that arise when theology attempts so thorough an integration of Marxian categories and concepts into its own methodological core. The profound influence of Marx on Segundo indicates the general indebtedness of liberation theology to Marx, with the effect that theology goes beyond itself and into social theory while maintaining its religious dimension. No study by a North American has yet focussed so pointedly on this crucial aspect of Segundo's work which shows the real challenge of liberation theology to all theology.

Book excerpt: Liberation theologians either argue for the liberating character of popular religion or they vilify it as alienating and otherworldly. This book takes a comprehensive and in- depth look at the issues, questions, and problems that emerge from the debate among liberation theologians in Latin America. The heart of the book consists of a comparative analysis of two prominent theologians, Juan Carlos Scannone from Argentina, and Juan Luis Segundo from Uruguay, who take opposite positions. Scannone sees popular religion as essentially liberating because it is from the people. Segundo disparages popular religion as a mass phenomenon incapable of revolutionary change and looks forward to its demise. Candelaria synthesizes these contrary positions into a new paradigm for examining the question of popular religion and liberation. On the basis of this synthesis, he formulates a principle for articulating the relationship between popular religion and liberation and with special reference to the situation of Hispanics in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is theology a dead corpse or living organism? For Uruguayan Jesuit Juan Luis Segundo (1925-1996), theology is dynamic. Freedom and existence for central themes. Segundo believed that theology should be transformative in human lives. For a theology to be transformative, there must be a connection to existence. That is, it must be existential. Yet most scholars have overlooked this assumption in critical analyses of liberation theology. This prima facie connection to existence is distinguishable from existentialism as a school of philosophy. By showing the significant existential dimension to Segundo's theology, assessing his work and contribution to twentieth-century theology relates to freedom, ecumenism, the role of faith in society, and the relationship between faith and ideologies.

Book excerpt: These essays offer a probing entry into the work of one of Latin America's deepest and most challenging proponents of liberation theology. Editor Alfred Hennelly has selected and briefly introduces the most important and representative of Juan Luis Segundo's voluminous writings from the last 20 years; most of them never before available in English. At once insightful and polemical, Segundo is drawn to the thick of today's theological controversies. He explores such areas as christology, revelation, the option for the poor, the future of liberation theology, Ignatian spirituality, and the meaning of the recent quincentenary of Columbus' arrival in the "New World".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a playful foreword that isn't, Juan Luis Segundo calls his present work posthumous - both because the sensitivity of the topic puts any future works in jeopardy, and because it provides the logical key to all his previous theological work. Thirty years a theologian, Segundo has tried to interpret the meaning of the gospel for believers today. One of the pioneers of Latin American liberation theology, he has tried especially to discern the relevance of faith to the emancipation of human beings from conditions of oppression. In 'The Liberation of Dogma' he turns to foundational questions of Christian faith seldom addressed by liberation theology: the meaning of revelation, and its articulation in dogma. Beginning with a brilliant historical survey of the development of scripture, Segundo lays the basis for his understanding of revelation as a process of divine pedagogy, an interaction between God and the human community in which the latter learn how to learn. The subsequent history of dogma reflects a continuation of the biblical story as the church learns to test and apply paradigms of faith to the challenges of an unfolding cultural and historical situation. Segundo examines the collision that occurred in the Middle Ages, when Greek dogmatic formulations -carefully worded to address problems posed by Hellenistic culture - were imposed on the new barbarian tribes as ready-made truths. This resulted in the loss of a dynamic understanding of revelation and faith, from which the church has only emerged since Vatican II. In his conclusion, Segundo develops a theology of revelation attuned to the signs of the times, a perspective influenced by the experience of Latin America's base communities. According to Segundo, Knowledge of God as 'revealing' something occurs to us when we are discovered to have a historical sensitivity that converges with God's own intentions. It is from a perspective and practice attuned to the Reign of God that we are free to discern God's revelation in history today.

Book excerpt: Liberation theology has become an essential component of almost every major debate over Latin America today. It has changed the face of political life in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Haiti; contributed to the rise of “people power” in the Philippines; even played a role in the growing discontent of debt-plagued Brazil. Now, using the plainspoken approach that made his Inside Central America the indispensable book on current affairs in the region, Phillip Berryman traces the origins, spread, and impact of liberation theology. He shows how its proponents have radically reinterpreted basic Biblical themes (such as the Creation and the Exodus) from the perspective of the poor and isenfranchised. By not asking “What must I believe?” but rather “What is to be done?” they make a direct connection between religious beliefs and political life.
