Text Since its founding in 1961, the Research Development Corporation of Japan (JRDC) has worked through the Commissioned Development Program and Development Mediation Program to promote the development of new technology of domestic origin. With respect to technology transfer, in particular, the JRDC has since 1967 mediated development with corporations through a program of collection and survey-evaluation, focusing consistently on patents held in Japan by national research institutions and universities. More recently the JRDC has put more effort into technology transfer regionally throughout the country, working closely with local technological research institutions and vigorously promoting development mediation for local companies.

In response to these circumstances, this year's White Paper on Science and Technology deals with the theme, 'New developments in Japanese Science and Technology in the New Era of Heisei, ' by considering how Japan's science and technology will progress and what new developments will be achieved in the midst of a variety of social and economic changes both in Japan and abroad. The white paper presents structural analyses of a number of aspects of the current state of science and technology in Japan from the viewpoint of its future prospects. These include: the improvement and future development of technological capability as a result of the superior performance of Japanese industry, changes and new requirements in the role of the public sector, personnel problems, and regional development in science and technology. It also examines the radical changes taking place in international science and technology and Japan's response to them. The report examines the relationship between science and technology and economic activity in society and at the same time analyzes and clarifies future issues regarding the topics mentioned above: the role and performance of industry and government in science and technology.

Book excerpt: Advanced S & T in recent times has evolved towards multidisciplinary research areas that straddle several specialized areas. From now on it is essential for Japan to efficiently and effectively drive research in such multidisciplinary research areas so that it can promote the creative basic research that is its duty as a scientifically and technologically advanced nation. For this reason it was decided that the 'Survey of Status and Development Directions of Advanced Multidisciplinary Research Areas in Japan', would be carried out over the two-year period from 1990 through 1991. The objective is to gain knowledge about the current state and development directions of multidisciplinary research areas and also about effective research promotion policies, by getting a grasp on the activities of study societies and the directions of ongoing research by individual researchers. In FY 1990 we got a grasp on the current state of advanced multidisciplinary research areas in Japan by interviewing knowledgeable people, conducting questionnaire surveys of individual researchers and offices of academic societies, and investigating documentation. That resulted in the extraction of what are thought to be important areas of multidisciplinary research from now on: (1) intelligent materials, (2) frontier instrumentation and control technology, (3) gene manipulation technology, (4) neuroscience and neurotechnology, (5) organomolecular S & T, (6) chronobiology, (7) global environmental S & T, (8) recycling S & T, and (9) computing science and technology. We then compiled the information about the current state of affairs in each area and topics thereof.
