Book excerpt: This book is a gift of love. My love for you will never die My prayers for you are forever before God. Neither love nor prayers have a shelf life! Barbie is a true story, as true as memory is can be. Barbie was the babyhood nickname of author Barbara Geraldine (Gerry) Meggait, ne Pouncy, and was not used past babyhood except by her father and brother, who called her Barb. As a little child, Gerry was nicknamed Baby, but she pronounced it as Barbie. In this memoir, Gerry portrays herself as the old woman and weaves her musings into the story of child Barbie. She looks at her own life through an objective lens, as if she were a kindly older person looking at Barbie growing up with her accompanying joys and sorrows. She grew up during some of Canadas darkest hours, as drought reduced the normally fertile lands of Manitoba to dust during the Great Depression. Her family, like many others, struggled to survive these impossible conditions. It was the strength of family, faith, love, and patience that pulled them through. Barbies story is filled with love, compassion, and understanding of a childhood and an era long gone. Gerry values her large familychildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildrenand wrote this book as a legacy for them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her remarkable debut, Joyce Weatherford writes with raw power, muscular beauty, and firsthand experience about life in the twentieth-century American West. Twenty-eight-year-old Iris Steele has just inherited her family's ranch in northeast Oregon. It is the ranch where she grew up herding cattle and harvesting wheat, and where her brother and father both died. It is also, it turns out, land that the Nez Percé Indians now claim is rightfully theirs. As Iris begins to piece together the property's legitimate ownership, she unearths not only her family's turbulent history, but also two centuries of tortured relationships between homesteaders and Native Americans. Struggling with a new crop and a fragile romance, she must ultimately confront the true nature of her legacy. In astonishing language, Joyce Weatherford combines unflinching descriptions of ranch life with the sensuous beauty of the Oregon landscape. Part romance, mystery, courtroom drama, and history, Heart of the Beast is a family saga of epic power and import.

Where to, no one really knows. Ireland, Gibraltar, Africa, Australia. All guesses. Destroyers left us at noon. Now we are on our own. No escort at all, and submarines supposed to be around. Guess they’re counting on our speed which is fast (25-30 knots, as compared to 3-7 knots for a sub). Only a lucky hit can sink us...  April 8, 1942. Had talks with young pilots of our squadron. One, age 23, bailed out and crash¬ landed north of here last February. He tells of coming down in unexplored bush area enroute to Darwin. Lost for 52 days trying to reach civilization. He saw no people, only cattle. No food except wild berries and frog caught bare handed.  August 27, 1942. Our squadron now is switching to the P-38 (Lockheed Lightning) airplane. Higher, faster, two motors -- will bring battle to the Japs, instead of running from them. More pilots and newer planes. Have a new commanding General, General George C. Kenney, who wants our squadron to fight hard.  June 14, 1943. Visited scene of the B-17airplane crash at Bakers Creek, 5 miles away, with Major Diller and the Engineering Officer, Lt. Neighbors. We saw where the left wing sheared through the tree tops, lost part of one wing and two of the engines, then burst into flames.  January 19, 1944. Met an old Cavalry friend, Al Geddes. He’s a Major, now. Told me some good news. He was Group Commander of my old 8th AB Group, now in Brisbane. He’s going to be flying to the U.S., next week. Hope he makes it in a C-54, four-motor plane. Happy Landings, Al, old cobber -- “Over and Out!” * * *

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He turned and ran to the small door where the hot water tank was kept. He yanked the door open, climbed into the cramped area and squeesed around the tank. He remembered that the weakest part of a trailer is the thin partition between the rooms. And with one hard blow of his foot, he sent the wall crashing in. Never stopping, he hunkered down and slipped through the jagged opening into the bedroom. Smoke was thick and he could hardly see. A tiny whimper came from the foot of the bed. He moved, half falling, in that direction. "I'm coming, Baby. I'm coming." He said, watching each breath he exhaled push smoke away from his face. He felt the crib, and then the baby's out flung arm. He took the gagging infant, wrapped it tightly in a blanket, and hurried back to the hole in the wall from whence he came. The heat was right behind him as he went through the hole and into the tight place around the water tank.

Book excerpt: “A riveting story in the hands of a master storyteller.”—James McBride, The Color of Water “I was four years old when my father came back to kidnap me,” begins this gripping memoir about Matousek’s search for James Matousek, the drifter father he never knew. Described by the New York Times as “part reminiscence, part detective story, part spiritual musing,” this memoir is more than the story of one man’s search for his father; it is also a look at the meaning of life and how fathers contribute to that meaning. Growing up in a family of troubled women (Matousek’s sister committed suicide when the author was 29), he describes the turmoil of growing up “fatherless in America”—an experience shared by millions of children in what sociologists have called the Age of the Absent Father—and the difficult, ultimately successful, struggle to figure out what being a man really means in an age of shifting definitions and evolving sexuality. With the tension of a mystery story, the climax occurs when Matousek meets a man he believes to be his father. But is he? And does Matousek, who has reconciled with his mother as she lay dying, really care? These are just two questions leading to this memoir’s surprising conclusion.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a decade of elegant pleasures and luxe living with the Atlanta brothers and sisters with the best clothes and biggest dreams, Ava Johnson has temporarily returned home to Idlewild—her fabulous career and power plans smashed to bits by cold reality. But what she imagines to be the end is, instead, a beginning. Because, in the ten-plus years since Ava left, all the problems of the big city have come to roost in the sleepy North Michigan community whose ordinariness once drove her away; and she cannot turn her back on friends and family who sorely need her in the face of impending trouble and tragedy. Besides which, that one unthinkable, unmistakable thing is now happening to her: Ava Johnson is falling in love. Acclaimed playwright, essayist, New York Times bestselling author, and columnist Pearl Cleage has created a world rich in character, human drama, and deep, compassionate understanding, in a remarkable novel that sizzles with sensuality, hums with gritty truth, and sings and crackles with life-affirming energy.
