Book excerpt: Bloomsbury—An Activity-based Integrated Course for LKG, UKG and Classes 1 to 5 has been designed and formulated in accordance with the guidelines of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.The series comprises a set of fourteen books, two for each class and one per semester. Semester books for LKG and UKG include English, Mathematics and Environmental Science. Semester books for Classes 1 and 2 include English, Mathematics, Environmental Science and General Knowledge. Semester books for Classes 3 to 5 include English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and General Knowledge. The series is strictly aligned with the basic tenets of NEP 2020. Thus, a lot of emphasis has been laid on promoting activity-based and experiential approach to learning. The series also seeks to develop the core twenty-first-century skills in learners, which lie at the heart of NEP 2020. Besides, great care has been taken to make learning a joyful experience for the learners. All this will together lay a strong foundation at the primary level and lead to the holistic development of the learners at each level. Some of the key features of the series are: • Key concepts supported with visual activities, games and real-life examples • Carefully-graded and comprehensive exercises to facilitate true evaluation • Online support in the form of animated lessons, interactive exercises, topic-wise videos and E-books (For Teachers only) as per the requirement of the subject • Teachers Resource Book to facilitate teaching ENGLISH The content for English is a perfect blend of the best of both worlds—past and present. The selections are based on the learners’ interests, and, therefore, will not only easily arrest their attention but also facilitate longer retention. The graded exercises lay appropriate emphasis on learning the four basic language skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Grammar Section in each book offers simple and clear conceptual understanding. MATHEMATICS The Mathematical concepts have been dealt with in an interesting and comprehensive manner. This way even an average child will have no difficulty in grasping the fundamentals. The series follows a graded and spiral approach, keeping in mind the age and level of understanding of the learner. ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES NEP 2020 lays emphasis on promoting the spirit of analysis and questioning because it has been increasingly felt that children learn more through talking, observing and discussing with others. This approach has been adopted in EVS content. SCIENCE The content in this section emphasises meaningful learning of science for the overall development of learners. It focuses on helping children understand their natural environment and correlate science with their everyday experiences in an interesting and comprehensive manner. SOCIAL STUDIES A totally new and innovative approach to teaching social studies has been adopted in this section. The lessons enhance the learners’ life skills and equip them with a high civic sense and arm them with an ability to face the challenges in life with confidence, and as responsible citizens. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE The main objective of the General Knowledge section is to create a sense of wonder in the learners and arouse in them a desire to learn and find out more about the world around them. We look forward for feedback and constructive criticism from the students, teachers and parents, which will be given due consideration in the future reprints and editions of the books. Book excerpt: This is a trilogy chronicling the amorous, intellectual and artistic adventure of a college student from Hong Kong called Tom, portraying him exchanging ideas and knowledge relating to western visual art from the Gothic Period through the Romantic Period with his fellow female student Sonia and the two developing at first a very good intellectual relationship and eventually a love relationship as they go through an intellectual and artistic experience from start to finish. Tom and Sonia have their own dream lovers, Tom being infatuated with a Eurasian girl called Anastasia (half Russian and half Vietnamese) with whom he had a kind of a one-night-stand in Berlin during the summer vacation before the current term began, and Sonia being attached to her boyfriend who is still studying in Cambridge, England. As the story unfolds, because Anastasia has disappeared from Tom’s world with neither explanation nor any contact details, Tom has been trying to track her down ever since his return from Europe, succeeding at last with the help of a friend to re-establish contact with her; and surprisingly Anastasia asks Tom to come over to join her in Greifswald, a small university town on the Baltic coast where she is studying art history, which Tom does at once to find himself joining Anastasia on an artistic trip to explore the famous fairy-tale castle of Neuschwanstein in Bavaria before heading for Greifswald, where the two lovers, their love rekindled, enjoy their sojourn in this Nordic land, loving each other and attending lectures on Romantic artists such as Caspar David Friedrich at the university, until one fine day Anastasia is called back to Russia to attend to her sick mother, leaving Tom all alone in this Viking land. To deal with his plight Tom soon meets up with Sonia in England. On his way flying to London via Iceland Tom stopovers in Reykjavik and has a great time, experiencing the Icelandic landscape and seascape and even bumping there into a friend from Hong Kong! Sonia soon joins Tom in London and then goes up to Cambridge to see her boyfriend, only to find him already attached to another lover, leaving her broken-hearted to return to London, to whole-heartedly start an artistic exploratory journey with Tom in London and then all the way, by train, to Vienna, where Tom has been the previous year with his father. While still in London the two go to museums and galleries to study great works by such great artists as William Turner, John Constable and William Blake, which got them ready for the next stage of their artistic exploration of Romantic painters in Vienna. Remarkably, once in Vienna Tom takes Sonia first of all on a culinary trip rather than on an artistic one, to savour Viennese specialities in pastry and coffee, while Sonia, beginning to fall in love with Tom, signals to him her affection before they actually go for museums and art galleries. The city fascinates Sonia and their last days there are spent happily studying works by Dürer, the Dutch Masters and Gustav Klimt; waltzing all night long in Stadtpark (City Park); visiting the Vienna Boys Choir in their Augarten home and enjoying Andre Rieu’s concert in Schönbrunn Palace just hours before flying home, with their mutual affection definitely reaffirmed at Vienna Airport!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will provide an in-depth look at the development, functionality and appeal of pre-arrival platforms to aid transition into higher education, including a range of provisions. Ensuring a smooth transition into higher education study is increasingly seen as key to both retention and success, both in the initial weeks of study and beyond. Pre-arrival platforms offer students a range of opportunities, which might include the chance to familiarise themselves with the practices and policies of their new institution before teaching begins. This book will explore these platforms from three different angles: their development, use and appeal to diverse audiences in higher education, and case studies illustrating their incorporation into practice. It will provide a comprehensive overview of not only the different ways in which such platforms add value to the transition process but also the way they embrace diversity and widening participation in higher education from the very beginning of an individual’s higher education career. With chapters written by individuals from a variety of roles in higher education, this text will also provide the reader an insight into issues arising from the use of these platforms. It will be essential reading for educational, academic and staff developers working with departments and their institutions to develop their support structure for new students as well as for those directly involved in widening access/participation programmes.
