Book excerpt: The “charming and terrifying” story of IBM’s breakthrough in artificial intelligence, from the Business Week technology writer and author of The Numerati (Publishers Weekly, starred review). For centuries, people have dreamed of creating a machine that thinks like a human. Scientists have made progress: computers can now beat chess grandmasters and help prevent terrorist attacks. Yet we still await a machine that exhibits the rich complexity of human thought—one that doesn’t just crunch numbers, or take us to a relevant web page, but understands and communicates with us. With the creation of Watson, IBM’s Jeopardy!-playing computer, we are one step closer to that goal. In Final Jeopardy, Stephen Baker traces the arc of Watson’s “life,” from its birth in the IBM labs to its big night on the podium. We meet Hollywood moguls and Jeopardy! masters, genius computer programmers and ambitious scientists, including Watson’s eccentric creator, David Ferrucci. We see how Watson’s breakthroughs and the future of artificial intelligence could transform medicine, law, marketing, and even science itself, as machines process huge amounts of data at lightning speed, answer our questions, and possibly come up with new hypotheses. As fast and fun as the game itself, Final Jeopardy shows how smart machines will fit into our world—and how they’ll disrupt it. “The place to go if you’re really interested in this version of the quest for creating Artificial Intelligence.” —The Seattle Times “Like Tracy Kidder’s Soul of a New Machine, Baker’s book finds us at the dawn of a singularity. It’s an excellent case study, and does good double duty as a Philip K. Dick scenario, too.” —Kirkus Reviews “Like a cross between Born Yesterday and 2001: A Space Odyssey, Baker’s narrative is both . . . an entertaining romp through the field of artificial intelligence—and a sobering glimpse of things to come.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six American men live behind a protective façade, their real work hidden from neighbors and friends. Different in countless ways, they are intimately the same in one: at any moment their lives can be altered with a phone call, and their actions may change the world. They are Special Ops. And one team’s mission is about to hit certain jeopardy status when the discovery of an Al Qaeda base in Venezuela becomes secondary to thwarting the transport of a nuclear weapons expert from that training camp to Iran. Informed by the true combat experience of Captain Jeff Struecker and finessed by award-winning novelist Alton Gansky, Certain Jeopardy is an immersing and pulsating fictional account of what really happens at every level of a stealth engagement: the physical enemy encounter, the spiritual war fought within a soldier, and the emotional battles in families back at home. Endorsements: Certain Jeopardy by Jeff Struecker and Alton Gansky is like the TV show The Unit on steroids! A group of six men appear to live normal American lives, but at any time they can be called to report to a Special Operations group performing actions for the safety of their country at the risk of their lives. The men are called to Venezuela to investigate rumors of a Al-Qaeda training camp. Instead they stumble into the kidnapping of a nuclear scientist who can empower Iran to create their own nuclear weapons. To rescue him and his family that is being held hostage for his cooperation will force them to use every skill they know and may cost them their lives. I'm not usually a fan of military thrillers, but this book grabbed me on page one and didn't let go until I finally remembered to breathe again at the end. Struecker has served several tours of duty himself, so the writing gives an inside look at secret military operations and the incredible amount of skill and fortitude needed by its members. The action is written so that every scene is almost cinematic; I could see it play out in my head. Interspersed are scenes of the families at home coping with never knowing where their loved ones are or if they will come home. Together they create a powerful look at Army life. I hope that the authors will revisit this team, because I would love to read more! --Christy's book blog

Book excerpt: 'Wilfred's sheer ambition is an inspiration. We can all learn from it.' - Peter Bazalgette 'Based on my career, Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones' approach to risk can produce huge dividends' - Nigel Travis, chairman of Dunkin' Brands and author of The Challenge Culture Jeopardy is the single greatest catalyst for making things happen in life. In Jeopardy, award-winning entrepreneur Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones argues that our natural instinct for caution is one of the greatest barriers to making progress in life, and shows how embracing jeopardy is essential if you want to succeed. Drawing on a life that has taken him from a deprived childhood in inner-city Birmingham to becoming one of the nation's most famous farmers, he demonstrates how we can all go further in life by learning to escape the fears that stop us from achieving our ambitions. Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones is no stranger to jeopardy: he remortgaged his house in 2005 to launch his brand 'The Black Farmer' from nothing. Its products are now stocked in all major supermarkets and the business has an annual turnover of several million. In this book, he shows that only by embracing jeopardy, and liberating ourselves from the shackles of uncertainty and self-doubt, can we realise our full potential. What could you achieve, if you decided to stop letting fear hold you back?

Book excerpt: Triple Jeopardy is a book about resilience written in a powerful, inspiring way. It’s a wakeup call that iterates that you are in control of your own story, no matter the circumstances. ~ Mike Tyson, Former Undisputed Boxing Champion, Best Selling Author, Actor WOW! Triple Jeopardy is a remarkable story that reveals intimate details about the author and her family’s encounter with the criminal justice system. It is emotionally moving, enlightening, thought-provoking, informative, even humorous at times and provides valuable life lessons. This book is a must-read from start to finish. ~ Flavor Flav, Hip-hop Rapper “When I first met Rita Ali, I had just begun working with Mike Tyson on his autobiography, Undisputed Truth. I was far away from my wife and dog back in New York, but Rita, Mike’s mother-in-law, immediately adopted me and made me feel welcome and, ultimately, one of the family. Each day I had some time to kill waiting for Mike to finish up some other business or tend to his pigeons until we could resume our taped interviews, and Rita helped to fill the time by regaling me with stories of her life back in Philadelphia. She had willed herself into being one of the few females to penetrate the world of boxing, first as a reporter and later as a publicist. Her stories of her interactions with Muhammad Ali, Don King, Joe Frazier, were so compelling that I urged her to write her own book! And I suggested it even more forcefully after she related to me the sordid details of her and her family’s persecution by the federal government for crimes that they didn’t commit. Rita went to work and now we have Triple Jeopardy. But rather than being a “woe-is-me” account, her memoir is an empowering document that proves the old adage that you can’t keep a good woman down. You’ll enjoy the anecdotes of the rich and famous celebrities that Rita has crossed paths with but you’ll have to admire the strength, discipline and wisdom that Rita imparts when recounting an overzealous prosecution gone awry. Far from broken, Rita and her lovely family have risen from the ashes of defamation like Phoenixes. “Their story is a cautionary tale that shows that it CAN happen here. And does.” ~ Larry “Ratso” Sloman, co-author with Mike Tyson of Undisputed Truth and Iron Ambition: My Life with Cus D’Amato http://www.ratso.org A woman who has always exhibited beauty, strength and grace, in her memoir Triple Jeopardy, Rita Ali proves that you can always knock-out the opposition. ~ Michael Spinks, Olympic Gold Medalist, Two Division World Champion

Book excerpt: When a young man with big dreams suddenly becomes an orphan, he is faced with big decisions. Holding to the dream of living in the Rocky Mountains that Tatum shared with his father, he begins his journey--a journey that takes him through the lands of the Osage and Kiowa and ultimately to the land of the Comanche. A solitary man by nature, he travels by night and sees a different land than the many pilgrims and settlers of the 1840's. Although driven by a desire to be away from people and their scheming ways, he is repeatedly drawn into the lives and problems of others. Although the ways of the woods are not new to him, he was a novice in his dealings with people, but his upbringing made him interject himself into the problems of others. The passing wagon train had more than its share of conflicts, but when Tatum spotted an impending attack by Comanche his conscience demanded he warn them. Then when that involvement includes a smallpox plague and a defenseless tribe of Comanche, Tatum is faced with a decision to try to free the captive white women or warn the warring Comanche. His journey to the mountains has become a journey to jeopardy.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A witty, charming, and engaging dive into trivia’s colorful history, from America’s highest-earning game show contestant of all time “Insightful, informative, and written with a strong dose of humor and humility. . . . I loved this book.”—Will Shortz, crossword editor, The New York Times Ken Jennings is trivia’s undisputed king—and as he traces his rise from anonymous computer programmer to nerd folk icon, he explores his newly conquered kingdom: the world of trivia itself. Trivia, he has found, is centuries older than his childhood obsession with it. Whisking us from the coffeehouses of seventeenth-century London to the Internet age, Jennings chronicles the ups and downs of the trivia fad: the quiz book explosion of the Jazz Age; the rise, fall, and rise again of TV quiz shows; the nostalgic campus trivia of the 1960s; and the 1980s, when Trivial Pursuit® again made it fashionable to be a know-it-all. Jennings also investigates the shadowy demimonde of today’s trivia subculture, guiding us on a tour of trivia across America. He goes head-to-head with the blowhards and diehards of the college quiz-bowl circuit, the slightly soused faithful of the Boston pub trivia scene, and the raucous participants in the annual Q&A marathon in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, “The World’s Largest Trivia Contest.” And, of course, he takes us behind the scenes of his improbable 75-game run on Jeopardy! But above all, Brainiac is a love letter to the useless fact. (Who knew that there’s a crater on Venus named after Laura Ingalls Wilder? Ken Jennings, that’s who.) Engaging and erudite, Brainiac is an irresistible celebration of nostalgia, curiosity, and geeky obsession—in a word, trivia.
