Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Faith Beyond Belief' is a captivating testimony of personal faith by the senior Allied prisoner of the Gulf War. This dramatic recollection puts you in his F-15E cockpit when he was shot down in the Iraqi desert, evading the enemy, and held in the cells of Baghdad. Together, you walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death and along his journey to freedom. By real example, it profoundly reflects the importance of faith and focus in life. No one has explained more intensely the experience of being hit by an exploding enemy missile, the agony of capture, and the dismal isolation and starvation suffered while in Saddam's grasp. The uplifting message delivered under these unimaginable conditions holds promise for those who feel perplexed by life's challenges. This book is for believers and non-believers, for young and old, and for all who may ever doubt their own inner strength or who may be unfamiliar with the inner courage and comfort that illuminate from God's promise to care for us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this powerful and inspiring memoir, a Pakistani immigrant shares his story of finding new freedoms and a new faith in America. It’s easy to talk about freedom. But unless someone has lived in a world that suffocates freedom, it’s difficult to appreciate the liberty found in America. This is the true story of a Pakistani Muslim who immigrates to the United States for college and discovers five transformational freedoms along the way: the freedom to fail and start over, to love, to choose one’s faith, to be an entrepreneur, and to self-govern. Contrasting these precious freedoms with the life he lived in Pakistan, Ali’s story reveals that God is the true source of liberty as He works in people’s lives to bring about redemption. A call to value and preserve American freedoms, Beyond the Golden Door is also an invitation for readers to consider ultimate freedom in Jesus Christ.

Book Synopsis Freedom Beyond Conditioning by : Jane Wiesner
Download or read book Freedom Beyond Conditioning written by Jane Wiesner and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we live in the Western world we are said to be free. But are we? To what degree are we bound by our thoughts and emotions? What fuses us to habitual patterns of thinking and behaving? Are we ever really free of conditioning? Freedom Beyond Conditioning: East–West researches the complex world of emotional life. It looks at the multifaceted relationships between body and mind; and the body-mind fusion that is emotion. Using empirical data, this book investigates the correlations between emotional life and mental freedom: analysing the experiential nature of a conditioned existence, while answering some difficult philosophical questions. Freedom Beyond Conditioning presents an interesting anthology of some of the world’s most critical thinkers. It suggests that freedom is defined through its etymological links to friendship and justice, revealing the quintessential paradox of “responsible freedom”. This book blends the subtleties of Eastern theories of energy, and their relationship to freedom, with the Western world’s science-based approach to mind and body. Ultimately, Freedom Beyond Conditioning synthesises a healthy expression of emotional energy with the achievement of balance and wellbeing, and offers it as a true representation of freedom, one that is revealed through the paradoxical freedom of restraint.
Book Synopsis Freedom Beyond Confinement by : Michael Ra-Shon Hall
Download or read book Freedom Beyond Confinement written by Michael Ra-Shon Hall and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom Beyond Confinement examines the cultural history of African American travel and the lasting influence of travel on the imagination particularly of writers of literary fiction and nonfiction. Using the paradox of freedom and confinement to frame the ways travel represented both opportunity and restriction for African Americans, the book details the intimate connection between travel and imagination from post Reconstruction (ca. 1877) to the present. Analysing a range of sources from the black press and periodicals to literary fiction and nonfiction, the book charts the development of critical representation of travel from the foundational press and periodicals which offered African Americans crucial information on travel precautions and possibilities (notably during the era of Jim Crow) to the woefully understudied literary fiction that would later provide some of the most compelling and lasting portrayals of the freedoms and constraints African Americans associated with travel. Travel experiences (often challenging and vexed) provided the raw data with which writers produced images and ideas meaningful as they learned to navigate, negotiate and even challenge racialized and gendered impediments to their mobility. In their writings African Americans worked to realize a vision and state of freedom informed by those often difficult experiences of mobility. In telling this story, the book hopes to center literary fiction in studies of travel where fiction has largely remained absent.
Book Synopsis Freedom Beyond Sovereignty by : Sharon R. Krause
Download or read book Freedom Beyond Sovereignty written by Sharon R. Krause and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be free? We invoke the word frequently, yet the freedom of countless Americans is compromised by social inequalities that systematically undercut what they are able to do and to become. If we are to remedy these failures of freedom, we must move beyond the common assumption, prevalent in political theory and American public life, that individual agency is best conceived as a kind of personal sovereignty, or as self-determination or control over one’s actions. In Freedom Beyond Sovereignty, Sharon R. Krause shows that individual agency is best conceived as a non-sovereign experience because our ability to act and affect the world depends on how other people interpret and respond to what we do. The intersubjective character of agency makes it vulnerable to the effects of social inequality, but it is never in a strict sense socially determined. The agency of the oppressed sometimes surprises us with its vitality. Only by understanding the deep dynamics of agency as simultaneously non-sovereign and robust can we remediate the failed freedom of those on the losing end of persistent inequalities and grasp the scope of our own responsibility for social change. Freedom Beyond Sovereignty brings the experiences of the oppressed to the center of political theory and the study of freedom. It fundamentally reconstructs liberal individualism and enables us to see human action, personal responsibility, and the meaning of liberty in a totally new light.
Book Synopsis Freedom beyond Forgiveness by : Thomas M. Bolin
Download or read book Freedom beyond Forgiveness written by Thomas M. Bolin and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bolin analyses biblical and extra-biblical traditions and motifs in the book of Jonah, and argues that the book's portrayal of the relationship between God and humanity, much like those of Job and Ecclesiastes, emphasizes an absolute divine sovereignty beyond human notions of mercy, justice, or forgiveness. God is understood as free to forgive, yet he still punishes, and is unfettered by the constraints imposed by attributes of benevolence. The only proper human response to God is fear at his power and acknowledgment of him as the source of welfare and woe.
Book Synopsis Beyond Religious Freedom by : Elizabeth Shakman Hurd
Download or read book Beyond Religious Freedom written by Elizabeth Shakman Hurd and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, North American and European nations have sought to legally remake religion in other countries through an unprecedented array of international initiatives. Policymakers have rallied around the notion that the fostering of religious freedom, interfaith dialogue, religious tolerance, and protections for religious minorities are the keys to combating persecution and discrimination. Beyond Religious Freedom persuasively argues that these initiatives create the very social tensions and divisions they are meant to overcome. Elizabeth Shakman Hurd looks at three critical channels of state-sponsored intervention: international religious freedom advocacy, development assistance and nation building, and international law. She shows how these initiatives make religious difference a matter of law, resulting in a divide that favors forms of religion authorized by those in power and excludes other ways of being and belonging. In exploring the dizzying power dynamics and blurred boundaries that characterize relations between "expert religion," "governed religion," and "lived religion," Hurd charts new territory in the study of religion in global politics. A forceful and timely critique of the politics of promoting religious freedom, Beyond Religious Freedom provides new insights into today's most pressing dilemmas of power, difference, and governance.
