Commencing May, 1852 written by Peter Jacobs and published by New York : Published for the author. This book was released on 1853 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Jacobs (1808-58) was the adopted name of Pahtahsega (literally, "he who comes shining," or "one who makes the world brighter"), an Ojibwa Indian who was an early convert to Christianity of the English Methodist missionary William Case. Born near Rice Lake in present-day southeastern Ontario, in 1842 Jacobs traveled to England where he was ordained as a Methodist minister. He worked for many years as a missionary in the vast region then known as Hudson's Bay Territory. Journal of the Reverend Peter Jacobs is his account of the journey that he took in May-October 1852 from his home in Rice Lake to the Hudson's Bay Company trading post of York Factory (present-day Manitoba) and back. Jacobs traveled the fur-traders' route, visiting the missions at Rossville and Oxford House. On his return journey, he nearly drowned in Lake Winnipeg, survived an early blizzard near Fort William (in present-day Thunder Bay, Ontario), and eventually made his way back to his wife and children in Rice Lake via steamer from Sault Sainte Marie to Detroit and from there to Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Toronto, and home. His journal (part of which he had to reconstruct from memory after losing his papers in Lake Winnipeg) provides a valuable description of the mission field, the great difficulties in winning native converts, and the perils of travel in this early period. The book contains two print portraits of Jacobs, one in Ojibwa clothing and another in Western dress, and a brief essay, "Peter Jacobs's History of Himself," in which he recounts his spiritual journey from belief in "the Great Being, the maker of all things" to his embrace of Christianity. It concludes with an account of the Wesleyan (Methodist) mission at Rossville in the Hudson's Bay Territory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manitoba has been at the crossroads of many of the important debates and events in Canadian history. From the early fur trade to the Riel Rebellion to the Winnipeg General Strike, Manitobans have frequently played crucial roles in Canadian and sometimes world history. Until now, there has been no comprehensive, contemporary source for information on the many Manitobans who have left their mark on history and society. Dictionary of Manitoba Biography fills this gap, with biographical sketches of over 1700 Manitobans who have made an impact in politics, the arts, sports, commerce, agriculture, and society. It is an invaluable resource for scholars, students, and general readers interested in Canadian history. Particular emphasis has been placed on reflecting Manitoba's ethnic and social diversity, and on including men and women who were notable in their own day but have now been forgotten. Many entries also refer the reader to additional references for further reading. More than a reference book, Dictionary of Manitoba Biography is also a fascinating work of history in its own right, which presents the full and colourful scope of over 300 years of people in Manitoba history and social life, from premiers and mayors to nightclub owners and sports heroes.

Book excerpt: The original people of the Hudson Bay lowlands, often known as the Lowland Cree and known to themselves as Muskekowuck Athinuwick, were among the first Aboriginal peoples in northwestern North America to come into contact with Europeans. This book challenges long-held misconceptions about the Lowland Cree, and illustrates how historians have often misunderstood the role and resourcefulness of Aboriginal peoples during the fur-trade era. Although their own oral histories tell that the Lowland Cree have lived in the region for thousands of years, many historians have portrayed the Lowland Cree as relative newcomers who were dependent on the Hudson's Bay Company fur-traders by the 1700s. Historical geographer Victor Lytwyn shows instead that the Lowland Cree had a well-established traditional society that, far from being dependent on Europeans, was instrumental in the survival of traders throughout the network of HBC forts during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word “Mississauga” is the name British Canadian settlers used for the Ojibwe on the north of Lake Ontario – now the most urbanized region in what is now Canada. The Ojibwe of this area in the early and mid-nineteenth century lived through a time of considerable threat to the survival of the First Nations, as they lost much of their autonomy, and almost all of their traditional territory. Donald B. Smith’s Mississauga Portraits recreates the lives of eight Ojibwe who lived during this period – all of whom are historically important and interesting figures, and seven of whom have never before received full biographical treatment. Each portrait is based on research drawn from an extensive collection of writings and recorded speeches by southern Ontario Ojibwe themselves, along with secondary sources. These documents – uncovered over the 40 years that Smith has spent researching and writing about the Ojibwe – represent the richest source of personal First Nations writing in Canada from the mid-nineteenth century. Mississauga Portraits is a sequel to Smith’s immensely popular Sacred Feathers, which provided a detailed biography of Mississauga chief and Methodist minister Peter Jones (1802–1856). The first chapter in Mississauga Portraits on Jones tightly links the two books, which together give readers a vivid composite picture of life in mid-nineteenth-century Aboriginal Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this long-awaited book from one of the most recognized and respected scholars in Native Studies today, Emma LaRocque presents a powerful interdisciplinary study of the Native literary response to racist writing in the Canadian historical and literary record from 1850 to 1990. In When the Other is Me, LaRocque brings a metacritical approach to Native writing, situating it as resistance literature within and outside the postcolonial intellectual context. She outlines the overwhelming evidence of dehumanization in Canadian historical and literary writing, its effects on both popular culture and Canadian intellectual development, and Native and non-Native intellectual responses to it in light of the interlayered mix of romanticism, exaggeration of Native difference, and the continuing problem of internalization that challenges our understanding of the colonizer/colonized relationship.
