Book Synopsis The Science of Near-Death Experiences by : John C. Hagan
Download or read book The Science of Near-Death Experiences written by John C. Hagan and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to consciousness during the act of dying? The most compelling answers come from people who almost die and later recall events that occurred while lifesaving resuscitation, emergency care, or surgery was performed. These events are now called near-death experiences (NDEs). As medical and surgical skills improve, innovative procedures can bring back patients who have traveled farther on the path to death than at any other time in history. Physicians and healthcare professionals must learn how to appropriately treat patients who report an NDE. It is estimated that more than 10 million people in the United States have experienced an NDE. Hagan and the contributors to this volume engage in evidence-based research on near-death experiences and include physicians who themselves have undergone a near-death experience. This book establishes a new paradigm for NDEs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into poverty in the rural Missouri Ozarks shortly after the end of the Civil War, John T. Woodruff (1868-1949) became the greatest promoter of civic and regional development in the history of Springfield, Missouri. Schools, colleges, hospitals, hotels, and resorts all owed their existence and location to Woodruff's clear vision and indefatigable efforts. The Woodruff Building and the Kentwood Arms Hotel are two of his outstanding architectural achievements. Woodruff brought the Frisco West Maintenance and Repair Shops to Springfield, and he helped found and build the entire town of Camdenton near the Lake of the Ozarks. For decades Woodruff promoted and built good roads in the Missouri Ozarks, and served two terms as the first president of the U.S. 66 Highway Association. In this encyclopedic biography, Peters documents the achievements -- amazing both for their breadth and impact -- of John T. Woodruff, a paragon of civic engagement.

Book Synopsis Wading Through Lethe by : Paulette Guerin
Download or read book Wading Through Lethe written by Paulette Guerin and published by Futurecycle Press. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Wading Through Lethe, a girl growing up in rural Arkansas learns to navigate life, love, and loss as she approaches womanhood. She leaves home to study and to travel. The heroes and gods of Greek myth appear alongside Christian saints; rural landscapes and cicadas give way to Gothic churches and the Roman Forum. Metamorphosis is at the heart of these poems-the necessary transformations that leave us changed as memory pulls us to the past, where nothing and everything is the same. With musical language, these formal and free verse poems highlight the way we shape memory and the inevitability of forgetting. In the end, the search becomes not about discarding the past but about choosing what we keep. Orpheus may have lost Eurydice, but there is still music.
Book Synopsis False Positive by : Theodore Dalrymple
Download or read book False Positive written by Theodore Dalrymple and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New England Journal of Medicine is one of the most important general medical journals in the world. Doctors rely on the conclusions it publishes, and most do not have the time to look beyond abstracts to examine methodology or question assumptions. Many of its pronouncements are conveyed by the media to a mass audience, which is likely to take them as authoritative. But is this trust entirely warranted? Theodore Dalrymple, a doctor retired from practice, turned a critical eye upon a full year of the Journal, alert to dubious premises and to what is left unsaid. In False Positive, he demonstrates that many of the papers it publishes reach conclusions that are not only flawed, but obviously flawed. He exposes errors of reasoning and conspicuous omissions apparently undetected by the editors. In some cases, there is reason to suspect actual corruption. When the Journal takes on social questions, its perspective is solidly politically correct. Practically no debate on social issues appears in the printed version, and highly debatable points of view go unchallenged. The Journal reads as if there were only one possible point of view, though the American medical profession (to say nothing of the extensive foreign readership) cannot possibly be in total agreement with the stances taken in its pages. It is thus more megaphone than sounding board. There is indeed much in the New England Journal of Medicine that deserves praise and admiration. But this book should encourage the general reader to take a constructively critical view of medical news and to be wary of the latest medical doctrines.

Book Synopsis The Course of God’s Providence by : Philippa Koch
Download or read book The Course of God’s Providence written by Philippa Koch and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shows that a religious understanding of illness and health persisted well into post-Enlightenment early America The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the power of narrative during times of sickness and disease. As Americans strive to find meaning amid upheaval and loss, some consider the nature of God’s will. Early American Protestants experienced similar struggles as they attempted to interpret the diseases of their time. In this groundbreaking work, Philippa Koch explores the doctrine of providence—a belief in a divine plan for the world—and its manifestations in eighteenth-century America, from its origins as a consoling response to sickness to how it informed the practices of Protestant activity in the Atlantic world. Drawing on pastoral manuals, manuscript memoirs, journals, and letters, as well as medical treatises, epidemic narratives, and midwifery manuals, Koch shows how Protestant teachings around providence shaped the lives of believers even as the Enlightenment seemed to portend a more secular approach to the world and the human body. Their commitment to providence prompted, in fact, early Americans’ active engagement with the medical developments of their time, encouraging them to see modern science and medicine as divinely bestowed missionary tools for helping others. Indeed, the book shows that the ways in which the colonial world thought about questions of God’s will in sickness and health help to illuminate the continuing power of Protestant ideas and practices in American society today.
Book Synopsis Studies in Kurdish History by : Djene Rhys Bajalan
Download or read book Studies in Kurdish History written by Djene Rhys Bajalan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent events in the Middle East have propelled the once marginalized Kurdish community to the centre of regional and, indeed, world affairs. The growing significance of the Kurds in the politics of the Middle East has lead to greater interest amongst both academics and policy makers regarding the community’s culture, politics and history. This current volume seeks address this growing interest by presenting a selection of articles from leading experts on the history of the Kurds. These articles scrutinize a variety of subjects which provide important context to today’s Kurdish question. It includes contributions which contextualize the evolution of a distinctive Kurdish identity and culture. Furthermore, it includes works which seek to examine the impact of the gradual transformation of state power in the Middle East – more precisely the breakdown of imperial orders and the concurrent emergence of the modern nation-state – on the relationship between the Kurds and the central governments under which they lived during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. In doing so, this volume will be of interest to all those wishing to gain a deeper historical understand of the present day Kurdish affairs. This book was published as a special issue of Iranian Studies.
