Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Forty-Fifth Session of the North Carolina Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South: Held at Duhram, November 23rd to 28th, 1881 Rev. B. B. Holder, an Elder of the Free Will Baptist Church, having joined our Church, and having been recommended by the Quarterly Conference of Wayne Circuit and having subscribed to our doctrine, discipline and ordination vows, was recognized as a Local Elder in our Church. Question 1 was taken up - "Who are admitted on trial? Edward L. Pell, of Chapel Hill Station; Leroy L. Johnson, of Randolph Circuit; James F. Washburn, of Double Shoals Circuit; Wm. T. Nelson, of Mooresville Circuit; Charles P. Snow, of Surry Circuit; Robert L. Hoyle, of Double Shoals Circuit; William L. Grissom, of Carthage Circuit; Edward Schulkin, of Front Street Station, and Joseph L. Keene, of Fifth Street Station, having been recommended by their several Quarterly Conferences, and having been approved by the Examining Com., were admitted on trial. Rev. H. T. Darnell, of the Presbyterian Church, was introduced to the Conference. A communication from W. C. Wolfe proposing to publish the minutes as heretofore, was read. The proposition was accepted. On motion of Dr. B. Craven it was resolved that when we adjourn we will adjourn to meet at 3 o'clock this afternoon. The Conference then adjourned for the purpose of engaging in Thanksgiving exercises. Conference met at 3 o'clock, P.M., Bishop Pierce in the chair, and was opened with religious services, conducted by Rev. James Mahoney. The Journal of the morning session was read and approved. A letter from His Excellency, Gov. Jarvis, touching the interests of the Oxford Orphan Asylum, was received, read and referred to a special committee, consisting of Revs. J. R. Brooks and E. A. Yates. A letter from Isham Cox, clerk of the North Carolina Yearly Meeting of Friends, announcing Rev. James R. Jones as a fraternal messenger from that body was read. Bro. Jones was introduced and addressed the Conference in an earnest, friendly greeting. He was responded to by Dr. Wm. Closs in behalf of the Conference. The response was genial and warm, fully reciprocating the kind expressions of the messenger. Rev. C. C. Dodson was appointed to take subscriptions for the Southern Quarterly Review, and attend to the interests of that publication. A communication from the Holston Conference, touching the consolidation of colleges, was presented by Dr. J. O. A. Clark. The communication was referred to the Committee on Education. A communication from Rev. J. J. Lafferty, of the Virginia Conference, in reference to the Southern pulpit, was received.
