Beginning with a review of the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems as well as fertilization and gestation, the discussion then turns to the physiology and endocrinology of sport and exercise, which is further elaborated in subsequent chapters on the impact of physical activity, hormonal changes, pathologies, and consequences of drug use for active men and women. Additional chapters address related topics, such as the impact of sport on young athletes and developing reproductive potential, physical activity and pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives in athletes, oxidative stress, and the impact of nutritional deficiencies on athletes’ fertility, with a final chapter providing recommendations and therapeutic guidelines for exercise-related reproductive disorders. Covering everything from the fundamental principles of sports physiology and human reproductive potential to the interaction between physical exercise and the endocrinology of the reproductive system, Exercise and Human Reproduction is an authoritative resource for helping clinicians understand how the reproductive system adapts to activity and exercise and offers strategies to avoid potential harm to human reproduction.

Book Synopsis Environmental Impacts on Reproductive Health and Fertility by : Tracey J. Woodruff
Download or read book Environmental Impacts on Reproductive Health and Fertility written by Tracey J. Woodruff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many reproductive and developmental health problems are caused by exposure to chemicals that are widely dispersed in our environment. These problems include infertility, miscarriage, poor pregnancy outcomes, abnormal fetal development, early puberty, endometriosis, and diseases and cancers of reproductive organs. The compelling nature of the collective science has resulted in recognition of a new field of environmental reproductive health. Focusing on exposures to environmental contaminants, particularly during critical periods in development and their potential effects on all aspects of future reproductive life-course, this book provides the first comprehensive source of information bringing together the arguments that are spread out among various scientific disciplines in environmental health, clinical and public health fields. It provides a review of the science in key areas of the relationship between environmental contaminants and reproductive health outcomes, and recommendations on efforts toward prevention in clinical care and public policy.

Book Synopsis The Fertility Transition in Iran by : Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi
Download or read book The Fertility Transition in Iran written by Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-30 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confounding all conventional wisdom, the fertility rate in the Islamic Republic of Iran fell from around 7.0 births per woman in the early 1980s to 1.9 births per woman in 2006. That this, the largest and fastest fall in fertility ever recorded, should have occurred in one of the world’s few Islamic Republics demands explanation. This book, based upon a decade of research is the first to attempt such an explanation. The book documents the progress of the fertility decline and displays its association with social and economic characteristics. It addresses an explanation of the phenomenal fall of fertility in this Islamic context by considering the relevance of standard theories of fertility transition. The book is rich in data as well as the application of different demographic methods to interpret the data. All the available national demographic data are used in addition to two major surveys conducted by the authors. Demographic description is preceded by a socio-political history of Iran in recent decades, providing a context for the demographic changes. The authors conclude with their views on the importance of specific socio-economic and political changes to the demographic transition. Their concluding arguments suggest continued low fertility in Iran. The book is recommended to not only demographers, social scientists, and gender specialists, but also to policy makers and those who are interested in social and demographic changes in Iran and other Islamic countries in the Middle East. It is also a useful reference for demography students and researchers who are interested in applying fertility theories in designing surveys and analysing data.

Book Synopsis Fertility and Reproductive Outcomes in Different Forms of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia by : M. Eda Ertorer
Download or read book Fertility and Reproductive Outcomes in Different Forms of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia written by M. Eda Ertorer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers all forms of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) and provides a comprehensive overview of accompanying reproductive problems. Affected individuals may exhibit low fecundability, infertility, recurrent miscarriages, painful sexual intercourse, sexual orientation changes, etc. If not diagnosed and treated properly, their children may also experience developmental disorders of the external genitalia. Depending on the defects in enzymes, severity of the mutations and residual enzymatic activities, the clinical presentation may differ from patient to patient. As these disorders are encountered relatively rarely, many cases are either undiagnosed or inappropriately treated. Given its scope, this book offers a valuable guide for gynecologists, endocrinologists, pediatricians, and professionals in reproductive medicine, as well as GPs, practicing physicians, medical students and residents.
