Download or read book Outline of Practical Sociology written by Carroll Davidson Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Practical Sociology: With Special Reference to American Conditions In preparing this work, I have made frequent and generous use of the results of official investigations which have been carried out under my own direction. They comprehend the work of more than twenty-five years; and as they cover many features of the present volume, I have felt justified in using them more freely than other official publications. The reports of the various State bureaus of statistics of labour offer a vast amount of valuable but cumulative material along the very lines of my own investigations. I have also drawn freely from lectures on social economics delivered at the Catholic University of America and at other institutions, and free use has also been made of articles that I have published in various magazines. The editors and publishers of The Forum, North American Review, Popular Science Monthly, Atlantic Monthly, The Chantanquan, Munsey's, The Bulletin of the Catholic University of America, Annals of the American Academy, and The Journal of Sociology of the University of Chicago, have generously given their consent for the use of articles or portions of articles that have appeared in those periodicals. Book Synopsis Serious Leisure by : Robert A. Stebbins
Download or read book Serious Leisure written by Robert A. Stebbins and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serious Leisure offers a comprehensive view and analysis of the current state of the sociology of leisure. Defining and differentiating the way people use their free time, Stebbins divides such activity into categories of serious, casual, and project-based leisure that he further separates into a variety of types and subtypes. Together they comprise what he calls "serious leisure." In this perspective, serious leisure constitutes systematic pursuit of an amateur, hobbyist, or volunteer activity sufficiently substantial and interesting in nature and requiring special skills, knowledge, and experience. Casual leisure, though immediately, intrinsically rewarding, is by contrast a relatively short-lived pleasurable activity, requiring little or no special training to enjoy it. Project-based leisure is a short-term, reasonably complicated, occasional creative undertaking carried out in free time. Stebbins sets out the basic concepts and propositions that make up the three forms, focusing on their essential elements. He takes stock of the serious leisure literature as well as that for casual and project-based leisure. Stebbins sees "serious leisure" realized by way of a set of foundational concepts--organization, community, history, lifestyle, and culture--and several of their component areas. He reviews the history and background of the concept of serious leisure and then adds historical commentary on, first, casual leisure and, then, project-based leisure. Finally, he examines the future and the importance of the serious leisure perspective in a globalizing world, and some of its critical links with other fields of knowledge and practice, notably the nonprofit sector and preventive medicine. Together with its original insights, Serious Leisure offers a single, handy, coherent, comprehensive resource. It will be of interest to sociologists, labor studies specialists, and economists.

The objective of the journal is to serve as a forum for the exhibition and dissemination of scholarly activities in forms of current researches and thoughts on contemporary issues. The scope of IJSSRP is wide and all inclusive as it ranges from issues in the United States to global events and happenings. It welcomes all types of researches ranging from field and experimental to rigorous theoretical explanations. Authors are not limited by their nationality, religion, subject matter or theoretical orientation. The journal is however interested in studies that will promote global unity and understanding towards achieving a peaceful global village, global social harmony and economic growth. Book Synopsis The Religious Roots of American Sociology by : Cecil E. Greek
Download or read book The Religious Roots of American Sociology written by Cecil E. Greek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1992, demonstrates that American sociology has deep religious roots which continue, both directly and indirectly, to influence the discipline today. Early American sociology was closely aligned with the social gospel movement in Protestantism, which hope to make use of the new science of sociology to help solve social problems and, ultimately, prepare America for the establishment of Christ’s kingdom on earth. Although American sociology became secularized after 1920, it retained its ameliorative outlook, hoping to ‘save’ mankind through positivistic analysis and technocratic societal planning.
