Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forming connections between human performance and design, this new edition of Engineering Psychology and Human Performance examines human–machine interaction. The book is organized directly from a psychological perspective of human information processing, and chapters correspond to the flow of information as it is processed by a human being—from the senses, through the brain, to action—rather than from the perspective of system components or engineering design concepts. Upon completing this book, readers will be able to identify how human ability contributes to the design of technology; understand the connections within human information processing and human performance; challenge the way they think about technology’s influence on human performance; and show how theoretical advances have been, or might be, applied to improving human–machine interactions. This new edition includes the following key features: A new chapter on research methods Sections on interruption management and distracted driving as cogent examples of applications of engineering psychology theory to societal problems A greatly increased number of references to pandemics, technostress, and misinformation New applications Amplified emphasis on readability and commonsense examples Updated and new references throughout the text This book is ideal for psychology and engineering students, as well as practitioners in engineering psychology, human performance, and human factors. The text is also supplemented by online resources for students and instructors.

Book excerpt: This is the first of two edited volumes from an international group of researchers and specialists, which together comprise the edited proceedings of the First International Conference on Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics, organized by Cranfield College of Aeronautics at Stratford-upon-Avon, England in October 1996. The applications areas include aerospace and other transportation, human-computer interaction, process control and training technology. Topics addressed include: the design of control and display systems; human perception, error, reliability, information processing, and human perception, error, reliability, information processing, and awareness, skill acquisition and retention; techniques for evaluating human-machine systems and the physiological correlates of performance. This volume covers Human Factors in transportation systems. Part One opens with a chapter by Chris Wickens on attentional issues in head-up displays; its concluding chapter by Peter Jorna, pulls together the Human Factors issues in air traffic management from both the pilot‘s and the air traffic controller‘s perspectives. Part Two considers the ground-based aspects to air traffic control, while Part Three emphasizes the psychology of the individual. The opening chapter of Part Four uses lessons learned from aviation to avoid similar mistakes in road vehicles. The final part contains topics such as naval command and control, and automation in trains and armoured fighting vehicles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this special issue are all extended and expanded versions of papers presented at the First International Conference on Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics. More than 110 papers were presented at the conference by delegates from 18 countries. This issue represents a small selection of those papers. It is difficult to define exactly what constitutes "engineering psychology" and "cognitive ergonomics," therefore it is difficult to draw a meaningful distinction between these two disciplines. Some would argue that the emphasis in engineering psychology is placed on science, whereas in cognitive ergonomics the emphasis is placed firmly on technology. This could reflect the academic-industrial emphasis inherent in the two subject matter areas. Others would suggest that in engineering psychology the emphasis is biased toward the person, however in cognitive ergonomics the accent is slightly more biased toward the machine and/or operating environment. What is certain is that both disciplines are intimately interwoven. The papers in this special issue all span this divide between the two symbiotic fields.

Book excerpt: This two-volume set (LNAI 8019 and LNAI 8020) constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics, EPCE 2013, held as part of the 15th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2013, held in Las Vegas, USA in July 2013, jointly with 12 other thematically similar conferences. The total of 1666 papers and 303 posters presented at the HCII 2013 conferences was carefully reviewed and selected from 5210 submissions. These papers address the latest research and development efforts and highlight the human aspects of design and use of computing systems. The papers accepted for presentation thoroughly cover the entire field of human-computer interaction, addressing major advances in knowledge and effective use of computers in a variety of application areas. The total of 81 contributions included in the EPCE proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in this two-volume set. The papers included in this volume are organized in the following topical sections: cognitive issues in HCI; measuring and monitoring cognition; cognitive issues in complex environments; productivity, creativity, learning and collaboration.

Book excerpt: This is a book about systems, including: systems in which humans control machines; systems in which humans interact with humans and the machine component is relatively unimportant; systems which are heavily computerized and those that are not; and governmental, industrial, military and social systems. The book deals with both traditional systems like farming, fishing and the military, and with systems just now tentatively emerging, like the expert and the interactive computer system. The emphasis is on the system concept and its implications for analysis, design and evaluation of these many different types of systems. The book attempts to make three major points: 1. System design, and particularly computer system design, must fit into and be directed by a comprehensive theory of system functioning. 2. Interactive computer design models itself upon our knowledge of how humans function. 3. Highly sophisticated interactive computer systems are presently mostly research vehicles, they are vastly different to general purpose, commercially available word processors and personal computers. The book represents an interdisciplinary approach, the author has used psychological, organizational, human factors, and engineering sources. The book is not a "how to do it" book but it is intended to stimulate thinking about the larger context in which systems, particularly computer systems of the future, should be designed and used.
