Book Synopsis The Boom in Barcelona by : Mayder Dravasa
Download or read book The Boom in Barcelona written by Mayder Dravasa and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boom is the socio-literary movement that brought the Latin American writers Mario Vargas Llosa, Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes, and Julio Cortázar and the Spanish writer Juan Goytisolo to fame during the 1960s. Prior studies of the Boom have essentially focused on the characteristics of the movement in Latin America and have been interested mainly in the originality or literary experimentalism of the Boom, in which these studies mirrored the ideals of the Cuban revolution. This groundbreaking book presents a history of the Boom in Spain as well as in Latin America and critiques the myth of originality of the Boom, which is only conventional inside the parameters of literary modernism. With this new perspective, the Boom appears as a manifestation of literary modernism, which repeats the history of the European avant-gardes of the second decade of the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis Born at the Right Time by : Doug Owram
Download or read book Born at the Right Time written by Doug Owram and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1997-12-15 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is rare in history for people to link their identity with their generation, and even rarer when children and adolescents actually shape society and influence politics. Both phenomena aptly describe the generation born in the decade following the Second World War. These were the baby boomers, viewed by some as the spoiled, selfish generation that had it all, and by others as a shock wave that made love and peace into tangible ideals. In this book, Doug Owram brings us the untold story of this famous generation as it played out its first twenty-five years in Canadian society. Beginning with Dr Spock's dictate that this particular crop of babies must be treated gently, Owram explores the myth and history surrounding this group, from its beginning at war's end to the close of the 1960s. The baby boomers wielded extraordinary power right from birth, Owram points out, and laid their claim on history while still in diapers. He sees the generation's power and sense of self stemming from three factors: its size, its affluent circumstance, and its connection with the 1960s – the fabulous decade of free love, flower power, women's liberation, drugs, protest marches, and rock 'n' roll. From Davy Crockett hats and Barbie dolls to the civil-rights movement and the sexual revolution, the concerns of this single generation became predominant themes for all of society. Thus, Owram's history of the baby-boomers is in many ways a history of the era. Doug Owram has written extensively on cultural icons, Utopian hopes, and the gap between realities and images – all powerful themes in the story of this idealistic generation. A well-researched, lucid, and humorous book, Born at the Right Time is the first Canadian history of the baby-boomers and the society they helped to shape.
Book Synopsis Rhythms of Writing by : Helena Wulff
Download or read book Rhythms of Writing written by Helena Wulff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first anthropological study of writers, writing and contemporary literary culture. Drawing on the flourishing literary scene in Ireland as the basis for her research, Helena Wulff explores the social world of contemporary Irish writers, examining fiction, novels, short stories as well as journalism. Discussing writers such as John Banville, Roddy Doyle, Colm Tóibín, Frank McCourt, Anne Enright, Deirdre Madden, Éilís Ní Dhuibhne, Colum McCann, David Park, and Joseph O ́Connor, Wulff reveals how the making of a writer’s career is built on the ‘rhythms of writing’: long hours of writing in solitude alternate with public events such as book readings and media appearances. Destined to launch a new field of enquiry, Rhythms of Writing is essential reading for students and scholars in anthropology, literary studies, creative writing, cultural studies, and Irish studies.

Book Synopsis Popular High Culture in Italian Media, 1950–1970 by : Emma Barron
Download or read book Popular High Culture in Italian Media, 1950–1970 written by Emma Barron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Mona Lisa smiled enigmatically from the cover of the Italian magazine Epoca in 1957, she gazed out at more than three million readers. As Emma Barron argues, her appearance on the cover is emblematic of the distinctive ways that high culture was integrated into Italy’s mass culture boom in the 1950s and 1960s, a period when popular appropriations of literature, fine art and music became a part of the rapidly changing modern Italian identity. Popular magazines ran weekly illustrated adaptations of literary classics. Television brought opera from the opera house into the homes of millions. Readers wrote to intellectuals and artists such as Alberto Moravia, Thomas Mann and Salvatore Quasimodo by the thousands with questions about literature and self-education. Drawing upon new archival material on the demographics of television audiences and magazine readers, this book is an engaging account of how the Italian people took possession of high culture and transformed the modern Italian identity.
Book Synopsis Communities in Contemporary Anglophone Caribbean Short Stories by : Lucy Evans
Download or read book Communities in Contemporary Anglophone Caribbean Short Stories written by Lucy Evans and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the representation of community in contemporary Anglophone Caribbean short stories, focusing on the most recent wave of Anglophone Caribbean short story writers following the genre's revival in the mid-1980s. The first extended study of Caribbean short stories, it presents the phenomenon of interconnected stories as a significant feature of late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century Anglophone Caribbean literary cultures. Lucy Evans contends that the short story collection and cycle, literary forms regarded by genre theorists as necessarily concerned with representations of community, are particularly appropriate and enabling as a vehicle through which to conceptualise Caribbean communities. The book covers short story collections and cycles by Olive Senior, Earl Lovelace, Kwame Dawes, Alecia Mckenzie, Lawrence Scott, Mark McWatt, Robert Antoni and Dionne Brand, and argues that the form of interconnected stories is a crucial part of these writers' imagining of communities, which may be fractured, plural and fraught with tensions, but which nevertheless hold together. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of community, bringing literary representations of community into dialogue with models of community developed in the field of Caribbean anthropology. The works analysed are set in Trinidad, Jamaica and Guyana, and in several cases the setting extends to the Caribbean diaspora in Europe and North America. Looking in turn at rural, urban, national and global communities, the book draws attention to changing conceptions of community around the turn of the millennium.
Book Synopsis Let Me Stand Alone: The Journals of Rachel Corrie by : Rachel Corrie
Download or read book Let Me Stand Alone: The Journals of Rachel Corrie written by Rachel Corrie and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-03-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A testament to how deeply we need the power and vision and energy of young women to transform the world."--Eve Ensler Rachel Corrie's determination to make a better, more peaceful world took her from Olympia, Washington, to the Middle East, where she died in 2003 as she tried to block the demolition of a Palestinian family's home in the Gaza Strip. A twenty-three-year-old American activist, Corrie also possessed a striking gift for poetry, writing, and drawing. Let Me Stand Alone, a selection of her journals, letters, and drawings as chosen by her family, reveals her story in her own hand, from her precocious reflections as a young girl to her final emails. Corrie's words--whether writing about the looming issues of our time or the ordinary angst of an American teen--bring to life all that it means to come of age: a dawning sense of self, a thirst for one's own ideals, and an evolving connection to others, near and far.
Book Synopsis Our Studies, Ourselves by : Barry Glassner
Download or read book Our Studies, Ourselves written by Barry Glassner and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2003 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What motivates a lifelong scholarly pursuit, and how do one's studies inform life outside the academy? Sociologists, who live in families but also study families, who go to work but also study work, who participate in communities but also try to understand communities, have an especially intimate relation to their research. Growing up poor, struggling as a woman in a male-dominated profession, participating in protests against the Vietnam War; facts of life influence research agendas, individual understandings of the world, and ultimately the shape of the discipline as a whole. Barry Glassner and Rosanna Hertz asked twenty-two of America's most prominent sociologists to reflect upon how their personal lives influenced their research, and vice versa, how their research has influenced their lives. In this volume, the authors reveal with candor and discernment how world events, political commitments and unanticipated constraints influenced the course of their careers. They disclose how race, class, and gender proved to be pivotal elements in the course of their individual lives, and in how they carry out their research. Faced with academic institutions that did not hire or promote persons of their gender, race, sexual orientation, or physical disability, they invented new routes to success within their fields. Faced with disappointments in political organizations to which they were devoted, they found ways to integrate their disillusionment into their research agendas. While some of the contributors radically changed their political commitments, and others saw more stability, none stood still. An intimate look at biography and craft, these snapshots provide a fascinating glimpse of the sociological life for colleagues, other academics, and aspiring young sociologists. The collection demonstrates how inequalities and injustices can be made into motors for scholarly research, which in turn have the power to change individual life courses and entire societies.
