Book Synopsis Kind of a Big Deal by : Shannon Hale
Download or read book Kind of a Big Deal written by Shannon Hale and published by Roaring Brook Press. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “So many strange and wonderful things happen at every twist and turn, you'll be happy to wander with Josie . . . Each book she descends into seems to teach her something, and even if it's not obvious where the story is going, we're in it for the long haul.” —NPR From Shannon Hale, bestselling author of Austenland, comes Kind of a Big Deal: a story that will suck you in—literally. There's nothing worse than peaking in high school. Nobody knows that better than Josie Pie. She was kind of a big deal—she dropped out of high school to be a star! But the bigger you are, the harder you fall. And Josie fell. Hard. Ouch. Broadway dream: dead. Meanwhile, her life keeps imploding. Best friend: distant. Boyfriend: busy. Mom: not playing with a full deck? Desperate to escape, Josie gets into reading. Literally. She reads a book and suddenly she's inside it. And with each book, she’s a different character: a post-apocalyptic heroine, the lead in a YA rom-com, a 17th century wench in a corset. It’s alarming. But also . . . kind of amazing? It’s the perfect way to live out her fantasies. Book after book, Josie the failed star finds a new way to shine. But the longer she stays in a story, the harder it becomes to escape. Will Josie find a story so good that she just stays forever?

Book excerpt: Peel the Banana (with included music CD?see below) is arranged as a sequence of dances and singing games from many traditions that Paul Rosenberg has found to be popular during his years of leading school residencies, family dances and community celebrations. Also included are simple instructions on how to teach the waltz, a list of enrichment activities for the classroom (including a reading list for schoolchildren) and a glossary describing all the dance movements and terms used in the book. For the CD, George Wilson (fiddle, banjo, bass, guitar, percussive feet), Peter Davis (clarinet, guitar, piano, mandolin, pennywhistle) and Paul Rosenberg (recorder) provide wonderful dance-length music for the 20 dances. The collection includes American dances such as the singing square Marching Through Georgia and the Virginia Reel. Other countries represented through their dances are Russia (Sasha), Israel (Zemer Atik), Germany (Kinderpolka) and Denmark (Seven Jumps). There are also dances from Ireland, Belgium, Quebec, England, plus two African-American singing games. For most tracks Paul calls the dance the first two times through. Book Synopsis First Avenue by : Chris Riemenschneider
Download or read book First Avenue written by Chris Riemenschneider and published by . This book was released on 2022-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where Prince and Minnesota made rock 'n' roll history--a glorious look back at one of rock's most storied clubs and the thousands of musicians who took the stage there. One of the longest running rock clubs in America, First Avenue in Minneapolis gets the rock-star treatment it deserves with this glorious celebration of a true rock 'n' roll landmark. Revised and updated through the club's 50th anniversary celebrations, the book chronicles the club's storied past--from its impressive inaugural show in April 1970 (Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" tour) up through the latest acts to take the stage at this beloved venue. In its initial incarnation as the Depot, the club hosted music legends as varied as the Kinks, Ike and Tina Turner, Alice Cooper, and B. B. King before transforming into a disco club known as Uncle Sam's. In the '80s, First Avenue catapulted to the global stage as the hub of Prince's Purple Rain and the incubator for widely revered, wild-eyed indie-rock bands such as the Replacements, Hüsker Dü, Soul Asylum, and Babes in Toyland. During the past half-century, First Avenue and 7th Street Entry have hosted everyone from the Ramones to R.E.M., Wilco to the Wu-Tang Clan, Billy Idol to Billie Eilish, Lizz Winstead to Lizzo, and hundreds more--all immortalized in this volume. Over the decades, First Avenue survived corporate competitors, bankruptcy, a bitter ownership battle, and most recently, a global pandemic to become one of the most successful independent clubs in the country and ground zero to Minneapolis's thriving community of hip-hop and indie-rock acts. Amidst all that history, the book is interlaced with anecdotes, quotes, and occasionally cloudy memories from musicians, employees, and regulars--many of whom are as unique as the club itself. Chock full of concert photos and memorabilia collected from professional photographers and average fans alike, the book is a lavish tribute to a rock 'n' roll landmark.

Book Synopsis BLOOD QUANTUM QUANDARIES by : Norbert S. Hill Jr
Download or read book BLOOD QUANTUM QUANDARIES written by Norbert S. Hill Jr and published by Fulcrum Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have been painted and painted others with the deep blood-red earth paint, which is the symbol of life. We call this paint ma etom, which is a derivative of the word for blood, ma e. Ma e, blood, is essential for life." Dr. Henrietta Mann, from the foreword A person's blood quantum is defined as the percentage of their ancestors who are documented as full-blood Native Americans. The U.S. federal government uses a blood quantum minimum as a measure of "Indian" identity to manage tribal enrollments and access to cultural and social services. Evidence suggests that if current demographic trends continue, within a few generations tribes will legally disappear. The forces of modern intermarriage and urbanization are resulting in fewer individuals who can legally meet blood quantum requirements. Through essays, personal stories, case studies, satire, and poetry, a lauded collection of international contributors will explore blood quantum as biology and as cultural metaphor. They will explain the history of the law and how it may result in the devastation of tribal culture and the perpetuation of tribal discrimination in the U.S. and beyond. Featuring diverse and talented Native voices representing different generations, backgrounds and literary styles, Blood Quantum Quandaries: Who Are We? seeks answers to the most critical issue facing Native Americans and all indigenous populations in the 21st century and hopes to redefine the meaning of cultural citizenship.
