Book excerpt: Joshua grows up in a little town near Bethlehem. When, at fourteen, he finds himself orphaned, he struggles to maintain the family's blacksmithing business, but he is sabotaged by a lazy, dishonest employee. He turns to God for help, and God tells him, Come to Bethlehem. Leaving everything behind but his precious goatskin blanket, he journeys to Bethlehem, where he finds work at the towns inn. In return for his services cleaning out the filthy stable and fetching water for the inn, he is allowed to make the stable his home. He takes great pride in his new home, where he lives with his dog Sasha and an ox called Samson. When weary travelers Mary and Joseph arrive at the inn, they are told there is no room. Proudly, Joshua offers them his home. Blessings and abundance flow into Joshua's life over the coming weeks.

Book excerpt: Joshua Binks, a poor black boy growing up with his single mother set against the racial background of Southern America during the early 1930s, has a very vivid imagination in possessing a secret divine, as his life unfolds, and is seen through his innocent eyes and a pure heart of a child in infancy and youth. Joshuas world is inhabited by fictional characters of fairytale and make believe muses who come to life within Joshuas fantasy dream world, as it is this setting where we are led into Joshuas world of animated and colorful characters open to his bemusement, as Joshua also has a unique and mysteriously transcending connection that is tied to the trees that often whisper his name within this world, taking his mind into a place of fantasy. During his childhood, Joshua has an accident, which changes the course of his life and takes away his ability to communicate without stuttering and so adds to his disappointment and disadvantages in his life. As the events of Joshuas tragic life unfold, we are also led back and forth into his world of fantasy. Joshua also experiences racial prejudice and discrimination from his peers when he fails to enlist into the army and is made to work as a kitchen porter, although in his waking dreams where he relies upon the narrative of the stories that were once etched into his imagination, he is still very much frowned upon and looked down and treated unfairly. As a kitchen porter in the army, Joshua also becomes the concern and a friend to his fellow comrades and potential soldiers in the making, although they seem to pity his disposition. As his relationships begin to blossom amongst the elements of racial tension, it is under this climate that things begin to develop as Joshua is taken under the wing of a young Christian girl who attempts to teach him to read and write. But just when things appear to be progressing, once again, the racial tension boils over until there is a bitter feud involving this simple and nave Joshua, which results in him trying to help his friend escape, and by doing so, he is made to be the victim of a tragic event.

Book excerpt: Minty stood with her feet planted firmly on the ground while beads of sweat rolled down her face. She was bracing herself for the inevitable. So as she stood there frightened yet defiant, she began to think how she didn't ask for this life. It was passed down to her like some birthright, and as much as she hated it, there was nothing she could do about it, or at least that's what everyone kept telling her. But for some unknown reason, Minty had refused to accept the fact that her life, her fate, was sealed and could never be undone. From the moment she was snatched from her mother's womb, Minty's life was shrouded in darkness and pain. It was a life she didn't deserve. As Minty lay on her mother's bed bleeding profusely from the brutal beating she endured earlier, a cool breeze blew in through the open door and encircled her bruised and battered body; a change was set in motion. Minty will embark on a journey that few survive, a journey that guarantees her death should she fail. But to not try would also be her death.

Book excerpt: The author of The Overmountain Men and The Canebrake Men continues his Tennessee Frontier Trilogy as the American Revolution rages in the wilderness. Two years after the colonies declare their independence, the American and British armies fight a seemingly endless series of bloody battles in the east. But on the Tennessee frontier, the war is fought by far fewer rules of engagement. In the wilderness, those who strike silent and swift win the day, every tree or rocky hill might hide an enemy waiting with bullet and blade, and a painless death is a rare gift. It is in this chaotic land that frontiersman Joshua Colter leads the newly formed Patriot Rangers militia against both the hated British and their Cherokee and Chickamauga allies. The war has already cost all sides a great deal in blood and betrayal. But for Joshua, the war is about to bring the pain of his own past into the conflict as old enemies return to exact their revenge . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My beloved shall dwell in safety beside you; I shall cover you all the day long, and he shall dwell between your shoulders. The deep, resonating voice, and the words he recognizes as the blessing Moses pronounced upon the tribe of Benjamin over five generations before, echo in Jonathans head as he herds his fathers cattle in from the summer grazing. He has suffered a terrible dream where the voice speaks to him after some unknown evil leads him to stand on the very brink of a precipice. Being the oldest son of Saul, the first king of Israel, and of the war like tribe of Benjamin, Jonathan has been reminded of his eminent future by his domineering father who sees his tender spirit as weakness; taught the laws of his God by an aging grandfather who believes it to be a remarkable attribute; and lovingly nurtured by a beautiful mother whom his father accuses of spoiling him. Coddled by a Moabite slave who not only delivered him, but also believes him to be pre-destined for greatness, he has survived a childhood fraught with the heartbreak, anger, and jealousy resulting from his fathers polygamous marriage. The setting is ancient Israel somewhere between 1150-1050 BC. Jonathans home is a gloomy stone fortress, located in the former Canaanite City of Gibeah. Casemated walls and a grand staircase lead to what the servants fearfully call the Lions Den, his fathers large, second story audience room. It has been twelve years since the Prophet Samuel anointed his father to be the first king of Israel. Twelve years that his mother has been unhappy and his father has been like a lion pacing a cage. With the advent of a young messenger sent to seek the assistance of King Saul because his city is under attack, his life seems catapulted into his nightmare. His father successfully rallies an army, wins a great victory, and is at last officially coroneted King. As Jonathan moves through the delicate web of choices that shape each of our destinies, he finds courage in his undying faith in the impossible and his hope in the promised rebuilding of Shiloh. Strangely, it is a horse that at last gives him the coveted respect of his father. A devil horse that his father secretly hopes will kill or maim him so that his more promising brother might become heir. Will Prince Jonathans stubborn obedience to God, and his longing to experience the true love seemingly lost to his parents, enable him to withstand his fathers jealous rages and planned marriage to the daughter of his evil counselor, or will he become the victim of the precipice in his dream?

Joshua’s leadership was the necessary ingredient. Joshua generated the nation’s transformation from wanderers to conquerors because he was oriented in his purpose. In part one of the book, Krogh explores the principles of change, integrity, and discipline In part two, he studies eight principles found in Joshua’s last lecture. Expectations of miraculous manna inhibit disciplined growth and claiming what God has given; but Joshua leaders push beyond the present stagnation into the promised future.

They teach us to abide by our spontaneous impression with good-humored inflexibility then most when the whole cry of voices is on the other side. Else tomorrow a stranger will say with masterly good sense precisely what we have thought and felt all the time, and we shall be forced to take with shame our own opinion from another.” - Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson In the 21st century, Tracy Michaels accidentally stumbled down a steep hill and discovered an ancient artifact written in a Native American dialect. Tracy brought the relic to his long-time friend, John Wisebear Spangler. By this discovery, their lives are dramatically altered when a fourteen year quest for the truth of their ancestry in the 18th century begins. Angus McNuley, an enigmatic character in 18th century England, and Sir Percival Slater begin a dire circumstance which lasted for three generations of the Nuley family. The Saga of the Nuleys: Volume One is how one man’s love was tragically thwarted by one man’s bitterness and the effects of Manifest Destiny on the Native Americans. Joshua Nuley, in the second part of the novel, learns how his destiny was shaped by Angus McNuley and altered by Robert Slater.
