Book excerpt: This book summarizes the history and present status and applications of Josephson junctions. These devices are leading elements in superconducting electronics and provide state-of-the-art performance in detection of small magnetic fields and currents, in several digital computing methods, and in medical diagnostic devices and now provide voltage standards used worldwide. Astronomical infrared (IR) telescopes, including the South Pole Telescope, use these junctions in combinations called superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unconventional superconductivity (or superconductivity with a nontrivial Cooper pairing) is believed to exist in many heavy-fermion materials as well as in high temperature superconductors, and is a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The remarkable progress achieved in this field has not been reflected in published monographs and textbooks, and there is a gap between current research and the standard education of solid state physicists in the theory of superconductivity. This book is intended to meet this information need and includes the authors' original results.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Small Josephson junctions are fascinating quantum systems with numerous potential applications, especially in the still infant field of quantum computation. In the first part of the thesis, I have studied some of the quantum aspects of these systems. Specifically, I have investigated their interactions with a resonant cavity, the Berry phase of a superconducting nanocircuit, and some properties of small Josephson junction arrays. I found that at specific values of the gate voltage of a Cooper pair box, there will be a strong coupling between the Josephson junction and the cavity mode; in this case the junction behaves as a two level atom. I also, verified that if there are N identical junctions in the cavity and are tuned on resonance, the cavity-junction interaction is enhanced by a factor [square root sign]N. This behavior is a clear sign of a cooperative phenomena. Also I found that if a Josephson junction is on resonance with one of the modes of a two-mode cavity, there will be a coupling between the two modes and ultimately a frequency-up or down conversion. I have also studied the spin-wave-like excitations of a disordered two and three dimensional array of small Josephson junctions. I consider a simple form of diagonal disorder and solve for the spin-wave spectral functions using the coherent potential approximation. Finally, using quantum Monte Carlo techniques, I have constructed the phase diagram of a disordered two dimensional array of small Josephson junctions. In the second part of the thesis, I have studied the dynamics of vortices in a clean layered high-temperature superconductor. I found that the c-axis conductivity at nonzero frequencies shows a strong but not divergent increase as the vortex lattice freezing temperature is approached from above, followed by an apparently discontinuous drop. The discontinuity is consistent with the occurrence of a first-order freezing of the vortex lattice. The calculated equilibrium properties agree with previous Monte Carlo studies of the system.

Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the use of scanning tunnelling microscopy to elucidate the atomic-scale electronic structure of a charge density wave, revealing that it has a d-symmetry form factor, hitherto unobserved in nature. It then details the development of an entirely new class of scanned probe: the scanning Josephson tunnelling microscope. This scans the Josephson junction formed between a cuprate superconducting microscope tip and the surface of a cuprate sample, thereby imaging the superfluid density of the sample with nanometer resolution. This novel method is used to establish the existence of a spatially modulated superconducting condensate, something postulated theoretically over half a century ago but never previously observed.

Quantum transport is an essential and challenging part of nanoscience, and understanding its concepts and methods is vital to the successful fabrication of devices at the nanoscale. This textbook is a comprehensive introduction to the rapidly developing field of quantum transport. The authors present the comprehensive theoretical background, and explore the groundbreaking experiments that laid the foundations of the field. Ideal for graduate students, each section contains control questions and exercises to check readers' understanding of the topics covered. Its broad scope and in-depth analysis of selected topics will appeal to researchers and professionals working in nanoscience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date description of the Josephson effect, a topic of never-ending interest in both fundamental and applied physics. In this volume, world-renowned experts present the unique aspects of the physics of the Josephson effect, resulting from the use of new materials, of hybrid architectures and from the possibility of realizing nanoscale junctions. These new experimental capabilities lead to systems where novel coherent phenomena and transport processes emerge. All this is of great relevance and impact, especially when combined with the didactic approach of the book. The reader will benefit from a general and modern view of coherent phenomena in weakly-coupled superconductors on a macroscopic scale. Topics that have been only recently discussed in specialized papers and in short reviews are described here for the first time and organized in a general framework. An important section of the book is also devoted to applications, with focus on long-term, future applications. In addition to a significant number of illustrations, the book includes numerous tables for comparative studies on technical aspects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This monograph is intended to give a relatively complete review of Josephson junction dynamics as it stands in the mid-1980's. The main idea of the author is to present the reader with as many useful results as possible by the simplest means, rather than to demonstrate theoretical muscle. This is why almost all the topics requiring elaborate techniques for their analysis are shifted to the ends of the chapters and the most complex chapters, to the end of the book. Topics which are of relatively minor importance for further discussion are mainly presented in the form of 'problems' at the end of the sections." -- from Preface.
