Book excerpt: Chief Rabbi Joseph Herman Hertz (1872-1946), perhaps Britain's greatest Chief Rabbi, led his community through two World Wars and was instrumental in the rescue of Jewish refugees from Nazism. He published many books and edited the seminal Hertz Chumash. Rabbi Hertz was a founder of the Council of Christians and Jews. As well, he was the first Jew to be made a "Companion of Honour" and was the first Chief Rabbi to make a radio broadcast. Now available in paperback, this book recounts Rabbi Hertz's battles to maintain the Orthodox affiliation of his community and the authority of the Chief Rabbinate in Britain, against the powerful opposition of his own Honorary Officers at the United Synagogue. *** "This is an important book for understanding Rabbi Hertz and British Jewry in general. I learned a great deal about how the British experience both contrasts and mirrors the American experience. I recommend this book for all libraries..." -- AJL Reviews, February/March 2015 [Subject: Biography, History, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies]

This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 1102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This e-book contains the 2013 Revision of RDA: Resource Description and Access, and includes the July 2013 Update. This e-book offers links within the RDA text and the capability of running rudimentary searches of RDA, but please note that this e-book does not have the full range of content or functionality provided by the subscription product RDA Toolkit. Included: A full accumulation of RDA— the revision contains a full set of all current RDA instructions. It replaces the previous version of RDA Print as opposed to being an update packet to that version. RDA has gone through many changes since it was first published in 2010. Cataloging practice described by RDA has not changed dramatically due to the changes above, but nearly every page in RDA Print was impacted by the changes, with the result that an RDA Print update packet would require nearly as many pages as the full revision. The most current RDA— the revision contains all changes to RDA up to and including the 2013 RDA Update approved by the JSC. Annually the JSC considers proposals to update, enhance and maintain RDA as a current cataloging standard. These updates can and often do change the cataloging process as described by RDA. The JSC also periodically issues changes to RDA to fix errors and to clarify meaning. These changes do not typically change cataloging practice as described by RDA. Reworded RDA— the revision includes the reworded version of RDA instructions. To improve readability and comprehension of complex instructions, RDA has been edited and reworded since its original release. The rewording was carried out by the JSC, RDA Copy Editor, and reviewed by the U.S. RDA Test Coordinating Committee.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geographic, spiritual, and intellectual journeys of Nahum N. Glatzer (1903-1990)-prolific scholar, Brandeis University professor, and editor of the Schocken publishing house-reveal a rich cultural ambiance that no longer exists, as well as a breadth of perspective and learning that remains enviable in our time. This collection of 78 memoir entries, written as a document for his family, offers personal glimpses of Nahum Glatzer which complement his scholarship. Episodes and vignettes in chronological sequence recount the decisive events of his travels from Bodenbach to Boston and from strict Orthodoxy to a more historical, cultural, and aesthetic understanding of Judaism. Anecdotal and at times humorous accounts of some of the many outstanding personalities Glatzer knew and interacted with, including Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig, two of the leading German-Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century. Glatzer also relates a variety of his experiences and expressions of faith, both personal and social. The events themselves become moments of religious psychology or theological insight. For Glatzer, as for Rosenzweig, the world was transformed by speech and the realities brought into existence through it. Michael Fishbane's detailed introduction sets these memoirs, from the final decades of Glatzer's life, in the context of his life and work. A preface by Judith Glatzer Wechsler offers personal reflections on the character of her father and his work.
